(00:00):
Hi everybody, and thanks for beingwith us on this off night Dodger Talk
here on AM five to seventy LASports. Thanks for being with us Thursday
nights, May twenty third. Alot of graduations happening out there around southern
California, whether it's elementary school, middle school, high school, college graduations.

(00:22):
Congratulations to all those graduating promoting movingon to the next level. It
is a big accompt of accomplishment foreverybody out there putting it in the time
and the effort and the hard workthrough their education. So big congratulations to
all the graduates out there at alllevels this graduation season. Eight sixty six,

(00:43):
nine eighty seven two five seventy isour phone number here on off night
Dodger Talk. And I want tohear from you on this Thursday night because
the Dodgers right now sit atop theNL West. They've got a lead in
the division over the San Diego Padresby six and a half games. That's
right. The Padres and Giants bothwon today. They have picked up a
half game on the Dodgers of thePadres are a six and a half games

(01:07):
back. The San Francisco Giants areseven and a half games back. But
the Dodgers just finished a thirteen gamesin thirteen day stretch and basically they played
a game over five hundred during thatstretch. They win seven and six.
They're coming off a home stand inwhich they went four and three. They're

(01:27):
coming off a series in which theDodgers dropped two of three to the Arizona
Diamondbacks. And certainly it's a longone hundred and sixty two game season.
Then the Dodgers have a six anda half game lead, They're thirty three
and nineteen, and they're sitting prettycomfortably atop the NL West. And it's

(01:48):
not nitpicking here. It's not pickingzits on a supermodel, so to speak,
here as far as the Dodgers areconcerned. But there are some things
that are starting to pop up withthis Dodgers team. Through the first I
don't know what sixty two game, fifty two games of the season, there
is a point in which the Dodgersseem to just kind of hit a roll,

(02:10):
whether it's in a series, ahome stand, a road trip.
And I know it's tough to getup for one hundred and sixty two games,
and this is a Dodgers team thatis winning a lot of series.
But I look at this series againstArizona, these last three nights out of
Dodgers Stadium. They win the seriesopener, and the Dodgers extend their winning

(02:31):
streak, and the Dodgers are ridinghigh, winning four in a row after
dropping the series opener to the Reds. And they come back the next night
and they lose seven to three tothe Arizona Diamondbacks. Christian Walker hits a
home run, Marte hits a homerun, and the Dodgers struggle. The

(02:53):
Dodgers again lose last night and theyget shut out six to nothing by the
Arizona Diamondbacks. Zero for eight runnersin scoring position. They strand eight base
runners out there and quite frankly, offensively locked any kind of enthusiasm in my
mind any pop out out there.Mookie Betts got on base a couple of

(03:15):
times, Gavin Luxman two for four, but the Dodgers had an opportunity after
opportunity to drive in runs and justmissed on fastballs right down the middle of
the plate from Ryan Nelson, whocame in it struggling so much so that
Tory Lavello, the manager of theDiamondbacks brought in an opener to start in

(03:38):
place with Ryan Nelson so he cancome in as the bulkinning guy. And
Ryan Nelson looked really good against theDodgers. Had some traffic on the bass
pass, but got out of thattraffic challenging Dodgers' hitters. The Dodgers are
first six innings yesterday, had runnerson base and stranded them there. Otani

(03:59):
left on base in the first taskarHerlanda is a lead off walking the second
they got nothing. It won outdouble by Mooky. In the third,
Dodgers have the heart of the lineupup and Otani and Freeman get out.
In the fourth inning, second andthird, with one out, Andy Pott
has strikes out on a ball downthe middle. Jason Hayward grounds out.
Threat done. Fifth inning, firstand second, nobody out, Otani flies

(04:24):
out, Freeman strikes out, WillSmith flies out to end the thread.
The sixth inning, one more chance. The Dodger's still in this game.
First and second, nobody out.How many times are they gonna put on
a platter for you? And AndyPott has grounds out into a weird two
five six' two double play, and then Jason Hayward flies out. There's

(04:45):
just to me stretches in which theDodgers look lethargic out there offensively at the
plate. They don't have that fireat the plate. And I got a
couple of texts last night from Buddysaying, what kind of a bats are
these that the Dodgers are having? How do you have runners on base less
than two outs and not put theball in play, not driving a run,

(05:11):
not get on the scoreboard. Andit's happened several times. I don't
know if it's the Dodgers feel likewe've already won a series. In this
case, they lose the series, but we're already at the end of the
finish line, so to speak,of this homestand this series, this road
trip, and they have letdown games, And to me, I'm starting to

(05:32):
see too many letdown games at theend of a series. They're now eight
and nine in getaway games eight andnine, there are sub five hundred team
in getaway days. Into a roadtrip, over into a homestand into a
series, you're moving on to adifferent part of the road trip eight and

(05:56):
nine for Dodger team, that's thirtythree and nineteen to be under five hundred
in getaway games of a series,a road trip, a homestand that to
me is pretty glaring. Finish offtheir teams, finish off a series.

(06:17):
And it may seem like nothing rightnow, but you got to start learning
how to finish off teams. Whybecause when you get to October, you
have to finish off a team andyou have to know how to put your
foot on the throat, cut thehead off of a snake, so to
speak of. It's the Diamondbacks. When you're up in a series, whether
it's the NLDS, a wild Cardround, the NLCS, the World Series,

(06:43):
you're up in a series two gamesto one, three games to two,
finish them off. Don't get complacent, don't get in a rut,
don't get into well, you knowwhat, we'll figure it out. Because
last night is a prime example ofa Dodgers team that can put the ball
all in play when they want to, but when they've got opportunity after opportunity

(07:04):
and they don't, they get shutout again for the third time this season.
Eight sixty six, nine eighty seven, two five seventy. A lot
has gone right for this Dodgers team. Certainly, they're playing really well,
but right now, something that sticksout is finishing off series, finishing off

(07:27):
home stands, finishing off a roadtrip. Finishing off series is gonna be
a big thing for this Dodgers teamcome October. It will be you remember
it. You don't think so.Now you're sitting in your car, you're
sitting back listening to Dodge to talk, eating a little something, and you're
like, you're crazy, cats, what are you talking about. I'm telling
you put it in the old memorybank. This Dodgers team learns needs to

(07:53):
learn how to finish off a team. It's something that it's starting to feel
like it's a problem. And theDodgers went on the road and cured some
of those problems a couple of roadtrips ago and got right again after losing
three straight series at home. TheDodgers are going on the road again right
now for a six game East Coastroad trip. And these are series the

(08:16):
Dodgers to win. At Cincinnati,at New York against the Mets. They
should win these series. They're rested, they're ready to go. They should
be rejuvenated after a day off ata night in Cincinnati to enjoy a night
steak meal or wherever they're at inCincinnati before a three game series and heading
off to the Big Apple and CityField next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

(08:39):
But it's just something that I wasthinking about last night and again when
I got some text messages from Buddysaying what's going on in these getaway days
and a couple of jokes about howmaybe I'm a curse doing getaway Dodger talk.
No, no, no, ThisDodgers team is really good and they've
won series. But to me,to be eight and nine and get away

(09:01):
days, you got to finish offteams. You got to finish off opponents
when you have a series win ora chance to go out on a winning
note on the road eight six,six nine, eight seven, two five
seventy. And I bring this upbecause the Dodgers right now are not only
need to figure that out come October. Learn now how to win, how

(09:22):
to finish off teams, because whenyou get to October you're gonna have to
do that. Learn now how tomanufacture runs, so when you get to
October, you're not having to figureit out on the fly. You get
it. Practice things now, dothem now. Over the course of one
sixty two so when you get toOctober, it's not new to you finishing

(09:45):
off teams manufacturing runs. Last night, the Dodgers were down three to nothing
after a three run fifth inning, but they had the first four innings to
get on the board. Just scratch, crawl, do something to get a
run across to take the lead.In the fifth inning, they're down three
to nothing and they have first andsecond, nobody out. Tyler Glass now

(10:07):
pitches his butt off, gives upthree runs in the fifth inning. You
have a chance to pick them up. You have a chance to make it
right for Tyler Glass. Now,first and second, nobody out. Oh
Tani flies out, runners move over, Freeman strikes out, and Will Smith
flies out. Your two three fourhitters with runners in scoring position, and

(10:33):
what is a tainable game? Stillonly three to nothing? You get one
runs, three to one, youget two runs. It's a one run
game. And Tyler Glass now maybegoes back out there, gives you an
extra inning, or do you getcloser to that Diamondbacks bullpen. Things could

(10:54):
change with a pitch here, pitchthere. We saw that last night with
Tyler last Now in the fifth aone out walk and then a single and
then a one to two pitch toCorbyn Carroll and all of a sudden,
a nothing, nothing game is athree to nothing lead after Corbyn Carroll's two
run triple, and then you spikea ball and Corbyn walks in from third

(11:16):
on a wild pitch. Baseball canchange in a hurry eight six, six,
nine, eighty seven to two fiveseventy. I also want to bring
up the point that the Dodgers aregoing into a stretch, not just thirteen
games in thirteen days and they finishoff, but they're now going into a
stretcher which they're going to make twoEast Coast road trips in the next three

(11:37):
weeks. They go to Cincinnati andNew York for six a day off a
week from today, and then theyget a three game series at a home
against Colorado. That is it,three games at home against Colorado, a
day off, and they're going backto the East Coast, three at Pittsburgh,

(11:58):
three at Yankees against the Yankees. This is a tough stretch. You
thought thirteen games in thirteen days wasrough, and the Dodgers, you know,
had some of those games at home. They're on the West coast.
Certainly, you only had to playSan Diego, San Francisco, and then
back home for a seven game homestandyou didn't have to leave California. But

(12:22):
now they're gonna have to go tothe East Coast twice. So it's an
interesting stretch here for the Dodgers, going back east to Sincy in New York,
only back home for three games, and then right back to the East
Coast for Pittsburgh and the Yankees. You've got fifteen games, twelve of which

(12:46):
are gonna be in the Eastern timezone, and you've got to make two
cross country flights. Not a bigdeal in the grand scheme of one hundred
and sixty two games, I understandthat, but that's a lot of travel
and wear and tear on it teamthat right now is playing over the last
thirteen games basically a little over fivehundred baseball and what was possibly an eight

(13:07):
or nine game lead, the divisionis down to six and a half and
the Padres are gonna keep winning. And he's certainly the Giants, maybe they're
playing a little bit above their skisright now, but the Padres are a
team to keep an eye in onyour in your rear view mirror. There
as far as being only six anda half games back eight sixty six,
nine eight to seven, two fiveseventy. Coming up at about seven forty,

(13:28):
we're gonna get you a farm report, and again i'll give you an
update of the Dodgers' top minor leagueprospects. There's already been some shifting when
the season starts in the minor leaguesabout you know, ten days after the
major league start. Minor league campbreaks and guys report to Triple A,
Double A, High A Ball,Low w A Ball. They stay maybe
at Campbelback Ranch for rookie ball andextended spring training. But guys break about

(13:50):
ten days after the major league seasonstarts, and already we've seen some shifting
because the Dodgers have called up fromTriple A arms Miguel Vargas. That means
it's a trickle down effect. We'reseeing guys then called up from Double A
to Triple A to fill the void, and guys are rewarded for good play

(14:11):
the first five weeks of their minorleague season, so it's a trickle down
effect. We're seeing guys moved upfrom Rancho to Great Lakes, Great Lakes
to Tulsa, the Double A teamand Double A Tulsa to Triple A Oklahoma
City. So we'll give you anupdate on the Dodgers' top twenty prospects and
some guys who are off to greatstarts that maybe aren't on the radar necessarily

(14:31):
with Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus andMLB dot Com, but that are off
to really good starts here in twentytwenty four and have earned promotions up to
different levels in the minor league. So that's coming up at seven forty.
Your phone calls at eight six six, nine eighty seven, two five to
seventy. Also, today is ananniversary for Sean Green. Now, you

(14:56):
older Dodger fans have a pretty goodidea what I'm talking about, but you'll
hear it coming up in about tenminutes. What Sean Green did on this
day, Now, it's gonna behard to believe twenty two years ago,
is that right? Twenty two yearsago Sean Green accomplish this feat. You'll

(15:18):
hear that come up about ten minutes. We'll take a quick break, we'll
come back. Your phone calls Stu, Chris, Gregbrian, Roger, Izzy,
I see it. I got oneline open. Eight sixty six,
nine eighty seven two five seventy.Dodgers need to start finishing off teams,
start winning series. Stop messing aroundwhen you get a team on the ropes,

(15:39):
finish him off. When you takethe first game of a series,
come back the next night and beathim again. When you got a rubber
game in a three game series likeyou did last night, you got to
manufacturer runs, figure out a wayto get some runs on the scoreboard and
stimulate the offense. Eight six sixnine eighty seven two five seventy. It's

(16:00):
Off Night Dodger Talk. It's gloomyout in southern California as the sun sets
on this Thursday night. Thanks forbeing with us, Tim Kates, ronniey
Fossio, and you right here onyour home of the Dodgers, AM five
seventy LA Sports Live everywhere on theiHeartRadio app. Tim Kate's with you here
on this Thursday night, May twentythird. Off Night Dodger Talk continues until

(16:22):
the top of the hour. Comingup in about twenty minutes. We'll get
you a farm report. Coming upin less than ten minutes. We will
get you an anniversary for Sean Greentwenty two years ago today. Hard to
believe it was that long ago.It feels like it was literally just a
few years ago, but twenty twoyears ago today, what Shawn Green did

(16:44):
in Milwaukee eighty six, six nine, eighty seven two five seven's go out
to the phones, thanks for beingpatient. Chris is in Malibu, Chris,
welcome to Dodger Talk. How youdoing? Hey, damn you got
me? I got you, Chris? Go ahead. Hey, you know,
so this is my very first ofall, if you have if you
have a payroll and this kind ofquality of guys, get the first two

(17:06):
guys on base. There's no reasonstoring at least one run seventy five percent
of the time. I mean,I just the guys are just too good
not to do that. And here'smy theory, a little bit out there.
But what do you think of thisFreddy Wiggles. Let me let me
finish the sentence here about the FreddieWiggles, I associate the I associate the

(17:29):
Freddie wiggle with last year getting sweptby the diamond Back. Remember the Washington
Nationals, the baby dark thing.Yeah, they didn't do that. The
next year they did something different.I think what I'm boiling it down to
is they don't have this killer instinct. I'm going they're getting a triple and
you're doing a goofy little Freddie wiggle. I don't think it's very intimidating.

(17:52):
You need to kind of be reallygoing after the team, like you're out
there to just knock them out.You have to and chick the other team
doing a silly little wiggle dance thatyou did last year that you lost.
The whole thing isn't freaking. It'sthe long mindset, all right. I
appreciate it, Chris. It isa different celebration. It's not necessarily the

(18:15):
same Freddy wiggle that they used intwenty twenty three. I don't know the
background of this. I'm not prevyto that. Maybe you have read or
heard in an interview a player talkabout it if you have eight sixty six,
nine eighty seven, two five seventy. But from what I understand,
it's completely different, and it's alittle wiggle and boom shake to one side.

(18:37):
So I can't believe we're sitting hereactually talking about celebrations after a double,
a single, or whatever they doto get on base to celebrate what
they just did. But I guesswe're here at that point. But it's
not the Freddy Wiggle like it wasa year ago. It is a little
different than that. Again, Idon't know what exactly it means. I

(18:57):
don't know the history of it.I know Freddie Wiggle was his dancing that
he did at a birthday party andalso what he did at the gala last
year. But it's completely different.I don't think it has good or bad
juju either way. As far aswhat happens on the field, I don't
believe in that, but you know, certainly if you do, then more

(19:18):
power to you. Greg and ShermanOaks is next up here on Off Night
Dodge. You talk. Hi,Greg, Yo, long time listener,
first time caller, appreciate that.Grab it to our mind. Yeah,
you know, you were talking aboutthose getaway games, and I know the
team has relied a lot on thelong ball. I would be interested to
look at the stats on those getawaygames and see how many home runs we've

(19:41):
hit in those getaway games and thestaff the reason we're not hitting them is
that the reason why we're losing,And if so, I'm kind of worried
about that. We've got a manufacturerruns. Just like you said, Yeah,
it's something They've been pretty good atdoing and I appreciate the phone call.
Greg. I'm bringing up this statthat I saw yes yesterday, and
now I'm trying to go back andfind it about the Dodgers' home runs and

(20:04):
where are they at as far asrecord wise when they do hit home runs,
And I'm going to try to figurethat out and pull that up here
as soon as I can find it. But yeah, the Dodgers, I've
been pretty good as far as notrelying on the home run ball the start
this season. Certainly, when theydo hit home runs, their record is
really good. And when they don'thit home runs, it comes down and

(20:26):
they're more of a pedestrian team asfar as win loss record is concerned.
But I don't know and getaway daysof a series or a road trip or
a homestand necessarily what the home runto win loss ratio is eight sixty six
ninety seven two five seventies, stealingCalabatsa's thanks for being patience too. How
are you doing tonight? Excellent?Tim, Thanks for having me on.

(20:52):
I see a glaring in that missand Dave Roberts' inability to use the bunt
if you got first and second, nobody out, a little leaguers, pony
leaguers, all the way up throughthe organizations. You bunt them over to
get him into scoring position. He'sgot guys on second base and extra innings

(21:17):
recently, where the guy's on second, nobody out. He doesn't bunt them
to third. When's the last timeyou saw a Dodger bunt. I saw
Dodger attempt to bunt. H wasa key. Key Hernandez attempted to bunt
and popped out. The other night, I did see shoey Otani put down
a bunt for a basic ruled thebasic could have been ruled an air on

(21:37):
the throw. But I've certainly seenit more this year Stu than in the
past five years. There's no doubtabout that. Why why did he have
a thing against bunting. He's alittle guy who played small ball his whole
career. Why wouldn't bunting just bea natural transition into managing Well, I
think that I appreciate it. Ithink the bunch comes more into play during

(22:02):
the regular season in extra innings, especially when you have that free runner at
second base and you're batting and youwant to get that runner across it's it's
in the numbers. I guess youknow to butnt that guy over with one
out a chance to drive him in. Now, Certainly, if it's the
heart of your lineup, you knowyou're two three, four hitters, you're

(22:23):
not necessarily going to ask them tobunt a runover to then try to run
get a run in. But ifit's where you're up the home team and
you hold the opponent to no runsin the top half of the inning,
you're the tenth inning and it's threeto three game, and all of a
sudden it's the bottom of the tenthinning, the Dodgers are at home,
and you got the free runner atsecond. I think it's in the best

(22:45):
entrance of the Dodgers at that pointto bunt the runner over to third one
out. Then all it takes isthe ball driven to the outfield, a
ball to the gap, and evena base it certainly, and you win
the ball game. When you're justneeding one run and you can get them
ninety feet away with one out,I think that's where you want the bunt

(23:07):
to come down. I don't thinkin a three to two game necessarily in
the fifth inning and you're asking somebodyto bunt to get the runner over to
the third to try to get thetime run into that situation. I think
you let it play out until youget later in the game. Now here's
the what I was looking for.Play Carris put this out there on Twitter
and this was posted yesterday. TheDodgers record in twenty twenty four when hitting

(23:33):
two or more home runs seventeen andone to nine to forty four win percentage.
The Dodgers record this year when hittingat least one home run in a
game eleven and six. Okay, still five games over five hundred. The
Dodgers record when they hit zero homeruns in a game zero. They are

(24:00):
now five and twelve for seven gamesunder five hundred. Again, much different
looking Dodgers team win loss record wise. When they don't hit home runs two
or more home runs, they're seventeenand one. Hit one home run,
they're eleven and six. When theyhit zero home runs, they're five and

(24:22):
twelve, eight six, six, nine eighty seven two five seventy. Let's
go to Eric and Hollywood. Alwaysgreat to hear your voice, Eric,
how you doing on this Thursday night? Nod JR. Nay shoo, Tim,
you know what. I am alwaysglad to call it and talk to
you, Tim. I think you'reamazing. Thank you very much for those
stats. But I am a littlebit concerned. I know it's really really

(24:45):
early in the season. I listento you all the time. Hey,
relax, don't jump overboard yet.But some of the tendencies that I see
from the Dodgers is what I sawin the postseason last year. It's like
guys disappear and they're not balling,and they're not putting. They're not they're
not putting back to ball and gettingsingles and stuff like that. Now,
I'm not as seasoned as you are, because you watch this game and you

(25:08):
know this game better than I do. I'm just a fan and I'm gonna
overreact, and you're hearing me rightnow. Overreact. But what is it
with the jelling of this team.I don't think they're jelling yet, you
know what I mean. I knowthat whole thing with O Tommy and You're
gonna pitch it and all that, and ki Oscar and and you know,
and and and and Miquel and allthat. They're all messing with him.

(25:30):
But it's it's something about a jellyphase that this team needs to get to.
The ninety nine Yankees had a gelingphase and they came into every game
like nobody's gonna beat us. Wehave the best team on the field.
There's no way you're gonna beat us. I just don't feel like the Dodgers
have that, you know, Ijust don't all right, fair enough.

(25:53):
I think this team has gelled well. I think this team has been hit
with a lot of off the fielddistractions already, and that has certainly been
the case with what's happening off thefield with Ipe show Otani's former interpreter.
I mean, that is a bigstory. That is certainly something that has

(26:15):
affected Shohees's personal life in a bigway, and showi Otani has continued to
go out there every day and playeven when it broke over in Korea.
It is something that for a newplayer on a new team with new teammates

(26:36):
to lose his best friend and interpreterthat's been around him and this game for
the last six years in Anaheim,he very easily could have taken some time
away from the game. He veryeasily could have been in a huge rut
with all the distractions and mentally justchecked out. It could have affected this
clubhouse tremendously with the being a distractionand constant questions from the media, from

(27:03):
international media, from the news mediastarting to cover the story. It could
have been a huge problem as faras talked about every day and a focus
that's taken away what they're doing onthe field. But it hasn't. It
hasn't. Shohay has continued to goout there, play every day, produce,

(27:25):
been really good, been a goodteammate, and it hasn't been an
issue, I believe at all inthe clubhouse away from the field, with
this team, traveling personalities on theteam, it just hasn't affected them.
And that's something that very easily couldhave affected this team with a new guy,

(27:48):
most high paid player in baseball, highest paid salary in North American history
of professional sports, and it breakslike it did off the field, it
could have been a monstrous distraction andsomething that really caused a problem in the
clubhouse because of all the questions. But it didn't. I think that the
credit to everybody in that clubhouse,a credit to the leadership of Dave Roberts,
that coaching staff, guys like MookieBetts, Freddie Freeman Tasker, Hernandez,

(28:11):
for keeping a light keicking Hernandez, for keeping a good attitude out there,
everybody involved in that roster and inthat clubhouse and on that team playing,
and in the team buses. Ithink that doesn't get talked about enough,
quite frankly, to be thirty threeand nineteen six and a half games
up playing the way they have been, and sure we're talking about finishing off

(28:33):
series. We're talking about a teamthat needs to do better in getaway days,
finishing off series, finishing off roadtrips or home stands. Put that
aside, this team very easily couldhave gotten off to a awful start.
For the distractions off the field wasShoeyo Tani, but they didn't a lot

(28:55):
of affect him on the field, between the lines and even in the clubhouse.
I think that needs to be addressed. What they've been able to overcome
with all the expectations and eyes onthe Dodgers this year, for the signings
and for the amount of money thatwas spent, and with what they did
in free agency and who they broughtin. There's a lot of people want

(29:17):
to shoot arrows at the Dodgers.Baseball people, baseball fans from all across
the country, and the Dodgers aregoing to get those slings and arrows all
the time for being the Dodgers, for being who they are and what they
do and how they win, andfor being one of the best teams and

(29:40):
best organizations in baseball. And tohave a distraction like that, again,
things kind have gone very south quickly, but they didn't. And that needs
to be I think talked about andmentioned because here they are first place in
the division. They've been able tocompartment compartmentalize, excuse me, and put
aside all that stuff being talked aboutand dealt with in the court and off

(30:03):
the field and gone out and playedbaseball. Is he Isabelle in Anaheim?
Hi? Is he? Hey?Hayekim, how are you look good?
I got your tweet last night whereyou said you didn't want to call in
it was too late, you weretoo upset. How are we feeling twenty
four hours later? Well, theysay, help we feel after tomorrow game,

(30:26):
because I'm still now over trust me. But Tay, last night game,
you know what I much? Itwas first rating last night, and
I forget that this is still abrand new team by and what's see what's
see what happened, It's just gonnabe I'm ki hearing that this is a
