(00:00):
This is Talk of the Town,a news radio with thirteen hundred and one
oh six nine FM. It's SteveKelly and Brett Pikita from West Michigan's Morning
News and we are joined by distinctivecaterings Tom Doyle on the live line.
Tom, thanks for doing this today. Oh it's my pleasure. Thanks for
allowing me to do it. Thiscoming Friday is the twenty five year anniversary

(00:21):
of the Slippery mcdivot's charity golf classic. Tom fill us in a little bit
about where you got this idea Agreat name, yeah, by the way,
and who it helps because it hasa big way. For a lot
of years. Well, I wasworking as one of the owners of brands
and one of my managers at BrandsonGranville came to me and thought that we

(00:44):
should do some sort of golf outingshow appreciation for our customers, and so
we put together the Slippery Mcdivot innineteen ninety eight, and the proceeds for
the first few years went to Hospiceof Michigan. As our career paths went
in different directions, we took alittle hiatus and then I met Father Djocomallei

(01:07):
Paullus priest at St. Andrew's Cathedraland he had a mission he started in
nineteen eighty nine where he brought someyouths from Boston area to the Dominican Republic
to build homes for the very, very desperately poor. And when he moved
to Grand Rapids, we met andhe told me about the mission. I

(01:30):
said, you know, let's resurrectthe slippery mcdivit. Let's see if we
can raise some money for construction andfurnishing the new homes. And that was
about ten years ago and since thenwe've built or repaired probably about three hundred
homes. And what we do iswe search ahead of time for the poorest

(01:55):
families we can find, and they'reliving in deplorable conditions, unimaginable, and
we choose these And what we tryto do now is build and furnished between
ten and fifteen homes each year ina two week period in March, generally
speaking, its West Michigan missionaries.Lately last year we started with some Catholic

(02:17):
Central students coming down and then wemeet up with young Dominicans who volunteer their
time in the northeast section near theHaitian border, and for two weeks we
build these homes from the ground up. We tear down the existing check and
replace it with a very nice, dirty home with the floor and new beds,

(02:44):
stovetop, table and chairs. Thisis just a whole new life for
them. Of the proceeds will weused to build and furnish small homes like
Tom Benson for these families. Andyou can be a part of it having
some fun at the twenty fifth endof a Slippery Mcdivit charity golf Classic.
It's going to happen this Friday,September eight. It's a noon shotgun start

(03:06):
one of my favorites, Glennie GoGolf Course right there in Grandville off of
Port Sheldon. And what's the bestwebsite? I know you've still got some
slots available for teams or players ifthey want to go and sign up and
kind of find out more about thistown. Yet they go to Slippery mcdivott
dot com, they can find allthe information about our mission. They'll find

(03:28):
a area where they can click onto register a team, and we'll take
registrations all the way up through Wednesday. And there's also a spot you can
click on if you want to donate, if you want to be a tea
sponsor, if you want to sponsora whole home or half a home,
or a furnishing of a home,or if you want to be a game
sponsor. There's a variety of differentways that you can support our local mission.

(03:52):
There may be a non golfer that'slistening that by what you've mentioned,
find that they would love to helpout as well. So Slippery McDivitt dot
com, we'll give you a linkto the Adalante Youth Mission, which is
an amazing organization making a transformational differencein the lives of these families. Tom,
you have to have some amazing stories. Oh I do. And you

(04:13):
know the beauty is you never forgetthem. You never forget the families.
I typically meet them ahead of time, and in my broken Spanish, we
tell them that we're going to buildthem a new home. Well, you
know, I don't know if theyreally believe it, and until we show
up a few months later, andthere they had this huge smile on their

(04:35):
face where they see us show upand we just go to work. We
give them a half a day's noticeto get the stuff out of their home,
most of which never goes back in. We replace it with new stuff
with the exception of their family heirloomsor whatever. And we typically takes us
about two hours to tear home downand then about two and a half to

(04:56):
three days to build one. Andso it's just amazing. The people are
so appreciative. And what's also amazingis they're not jealous if their neighbor gets
a new home and they don't.They're happy for their neighbor. And that's
one of the most amazing things I'vediscovered about the people in the Dominican Republic.

(05:17):
The event, by the way,is being sponsored by one of Tom's
businesses, Distinctive Catering. Thus youcan imagine there is some type of a
food twist. And if you knowthe uniqueness of Tom Doyle, he likes
a little creativity in everything he does, and this golf fighting certainly has that
to tell people if they want toget involved. I mean, this is
one of the only events I'm awarethere are a lot of golf fightings out
there that are for great causes. But you guys actually have a men's,

(05:40):
women's and co ed division as faras teams, and there's food out on
the course as you're playing. Yeah, we do have three divisions men,
women, and the coed is prettydominant. So it's a great outing if
you want to take your spouse orsignificant other and team up with another couple

(06:00):
and just have a day of fun. And that's what it is. And
on the course, we have threestations on three different holes. We had
the kind of like the Detroit Coneydogstation. Then we have a station up
on one of the holes with slicedprime rib and different cold salads. And
then we have another station on thecourse with grilled chicken and beef and vegetable
kebabs and another salad. And thenafterwards we have a nice dinner inside the

(06:26):
banquet hall, and so it's afull day of fun and food and it's
it's really like no other. Ifyou just want to you don't even have
to know anybody, just show up, you know, sign up, show
up, you'll have a blast.Slippery McDivitt's Charity Golf Classic in year number
twenty five, Friday, September eighth, that's a noon shotgun start with distinctive
catering. Tom Doyle, it's beena pleasure. Thank you for your time

(06:49):
today. Thank you guys. Ireally appreciate your help and promoting this,
you know, and if you wantto follow along and see what we do
this year or what we've done lastyear, just go to slippermctivit dot com.
I continue to add pictures, etcetera. So's it really is a
local mission. This is Talk ofthe Town on news radio with thirteen hundred

(07:11):
and one oh six nine FM.
