(00:22):
Hey, everybody, Welcome to theMaria Effect Podcast. I'm Mariah and let's
get into it. So today Ireally wanted to talk about music because it's
super important to me. I thinki've mentioned it on the podcast before that
it's probably one of my passions. It's been since I was a little kid.
(00:42):
And it's kind of hard to findpeople who appreciate music the same way
that you do. And I neverreally had that in my biological family before,
not to any real extent, andso it's been really nice used to
have somebody in my life who doesappreciate music almost more than I do in
(01:04):
some ways. So today we're gonnatalk about music, and we have a
special guest with us to talk musicwith me. Hello. Hello, I'm
Lucas, Maria's brother. Mm hmm. I've talked about Lucas before on the
podcast, almost always telling a stupid, funny story because that's kind of just
our life is stupid and funny.Lucas is kind of like the jokester of
(01:33):
the family and sometimes like it's perfectfor some of us and sometimes it's not.
But he's basically the youngest, he'sone of two of the youngest because
he's a twin, which is soweird. By the way, you have
such a weird thing about twins.I never understand it. It's because there's
so many horror things about twins, like in movies where it's like how what
(01:59):
is happening? Like what's wrong withthis girl? Surprise, It's because there's
an evil twin. I've maybe seenthat trope like twice, but I don't
think you consume like visual content orbook content in the way that I do.
That's a fair enough, that's fairenough. So I definitely think I've
seen more of that in my lifethan you have. So I've been traumatized
(02:22):
by it. I literally have abook over on my bookshelf in my room
that's like called The Twin or somethinglike that, and it was a horror
book, but it was like Icouldn't even finish it. I had nightmares
about it, And I've had nightmaresof like a like a twin of mine
taking over my life. That's wildbecause I'm not even an identical twin.
(02:45):
You're not, And that's why Ilike. I like you, That's why
I can be around you. Butit's true, like I have that I
have such a weird thing about twins, but I think out of you and
Len's see, like you guys sharethe evil twin thing, like it goes
back and forth pretty often. Yeah, we're pretty uh, pretty even on
(03:07):
the scales of justice. Yeah.Sometimes there's things that like you'll be so
morally up about and then sometimes you'llbe like, do you think I could
hit this kid when we're driving downthe street. Yeah, as a joke,
but yeah yeah as a joke.Sure, sure not actually gonna hit
(03:32):
the kid. No, I know, I know, But like you fantasize
about it. Well, I wouldn'tsay fantasize. Fantasize is a is a
way of expressing like desires a Itwas more of like a intrusive thought.
M hmmm. Because I didn't wantit. It just happened, Okay,
(03:53):
Okay, Yeah, I guess we'renot as similar as I thought. I'm
just kidding. I'm just kidding. But I think like one of the things
that made me realize that you wereso into music like I am is because
(04:13):
like we have a Amazon Alexa inthe kitchen at our house, and I
feel like anytime like we're in theroom for more than like twenty minutes or
so, and there's just this unsettlingsilence going on. Lucas is like I'm
gonna put on some music and justputs on literally whatever he's into at the
(04:35):
moment, and it's always I didn'trealize how like curated his playlists are,
but they're like like thirty year longplaylists each one of them. That's a
bit of an over exaggeration, butof course is it. That's what I'm
great at, right, right, right, But that's what makes that I'm
glad you get the joke. Welcome, welcome to the joke, to the
(04:59):
joke. But yeah, so liketell me, tell us, tell us
all a little bit about like whyyou like, what makes you make these
playlists the way that you do well? I well, for my entire life,
I've grown up in a musical household. There's always been music, whether
that be just because there's a lotof people in the family or because like
(05:21):
somebody's going to piano lessons or something. So music has almost been a consistent
like background noise for the entirety ofmy life. Like nowadays especially, you
can go anywhere and there's music somewhere. So music has always been kind of
there in my mind since the dayI was born, but I found it's
(05:44):
a it's a great way to kindof escape from reality or kind of face
reality, depending on how you wantto look at it. And so music
has been really therapeutic almost for me, for like my entire life. Anytime
that I needed to kind of hashout some emotions, you just gotta put
on the right song and you cankind of do with those or escape those
(06:08):
if you need. So, yeah, yeah, that's good. I've talked
about it on the podcast before,Like, because when I was growing up,
a lot of my like reasons forhobbies were about escape because I didn't
want to be where I was,and so like, you know, jumping
into books like rereading Harry Potter likefive pajillion times and watching TV stuff like
(06:33):
that was always about escape. AndI feel like music became that way too,
because my house was very loud fornot fun reasons, and so like
putting in some headphones and just listeningto music into the night so that I
could actually fall asleep was a bigthing. But then it became me listening
(06:56):
to music and like hearing song aftersong that I know all of the lyrics
to, and so I'm just layingin bed, like like muttering the lyrics
under my breath and not falling asleep. So it just became more and more
big to me. And when Iwas really younger, I was doing like
piano lessons, I did choir inhigh school and stuff, and so music
(07:21):
just was kind of a part ofme. And my musical tastes are kind
of all over the place. Notcountry, but everything else outside of that,
I just bounce all over because forme, it's about good like because
I, you know, grew upwith music in the piano way and vocally
(07:44):
speaking, like chord progressions are reallyimportant to me, like making sure it
like musically sounds good, and thenalso like the person that's singing, if
they have a good voice, thenI'm instantly pulled into it. So it's
not really about the genre early,it's more about the song itself. But
yeah, my musical tastes are allover the place. But I will say
(08:05):
that I'm pretty big into pop,Like pop is the majority of my music.
Well, I think it's a verypopular genre for a reason. I
think it's a very easy kind ofmusic to get into, even if you're
not a huge fan of music, just because it's so catchy. It's so
upbeat. It's very easy to getinto because it's popular. Is that what
(08:28):
that's from? I actually don't know. I don't think so. But if
you know tell us, Yeah,I'm not sure about that one. Actually,
I'm probably gonna look it up immediatelywhen we're done if I remember,
But in case I forget tell us. Yeah, I love to know.
(08:50):
But I'm a very big advocate onthere are there are some good songs in
every genre, every single genre, there are at least one there's at least
one good song. Yeah. Imean, I do have a couple of
songs that are I guess considered countrymore than I thought we're considered country.
There's a song called like Big YellowTaxi or something like that that I listened
(09:13):
to that Lucas was like, thisis country and I was like, no,
it's not, no way, yeah, uh yeah. Rascal Flats considered
country. So what's Rascal Flats? Is that one where it's like on the
road or something lightning McQueen Yeah, yeah, in the cars, in the
cars, see if you can getto meet through Disney, you've got me,
(09:37):
yep, because you've got a friendin me. That's country as hell.
But that's that's a good song.Yeah, a good sign is so.
So what we're going to talk abouttoday too, is like I I
realized that Lucas was really into musicbecause of that, and like anytime we'd
(09:58):
get in the car to go somewhere, like especially with our mom, like
he immediately takes over the like theuh, what do you call it stereo
in the car radio in the car, He'll immediately jump and bluetooth his phone
to it before anybody can do anything. So that way he can be playing
his music. And most of thetime we're having like conversations in the car
(10:18):
with Mom, and so your musicis like in the background, but it
has to be your music, yeah, because if I'm not part of the
conversation, I have to have somethingthat I'm kind of contributing. Yeah,
he is pretty quiet during me andMom's conversations because we're pretty gabby. Yeah,
you guys just talk talk talk, there's no room for but in.
(10:39):
But yeah, and also, likeme and Lucas haven't always been super close.
Like he's seven years younger than Iam, and so when I first
met him, he was like nine, What was I going to talk to
a nine year old about? Butnow that we're both old and adults,
(11:01):
Like we started like bonding more andmore and getting to know each other more
and more. And his music wasplaying all the time, and oh my
gosh, the number of times thatTaylor Swift would come on used to drive
me so crazy. Yeah, therewas a there's a big moment in my
life where, well, the majorityof my life, Taylor Swift was was
a very prominent artist in my life. Yeah. Yeah, And I didn't
(11:26):
hate her, like it wasn't hate. It was just like the over like
how overhyped some of her songs wereon the radio, because like before sixteen,
before yeah, sixteen or seventeen, when I was able to get my
own like iPhone and actually had accessibilityto music in that way, like everything
(11:46):
I listened to was on the radioor like through YouTube, like looking up
on my own, and so justthe number of times that her videos and
her music came up was so overwhelmingthat it made me not want to listen
to her at all. But yeah, it would just come up all the
time on his music and I'd belike t Swift again, like this girl
(12:11):
again, Oh my gosh. Andhe was so adamant of like, you
know what you're talking about like thisis so good, You're just not giving
her a shot, as I believewhat I would always tell you, Yeah,
you're just not giving her any chances. And then I don't know what
happened. I don't know what changed. I think it's when her Midnight's album
came out or something. A friendat work was like, oh, I
(12:33):
know this girl and she's really intoTaylor Swift and you're into music. Do
you know her music? And Iwas like, let's look her up,
like, let me help you out. And I looked up the Midnight looked
up and Midnights popped up and Iwas like, oh, she has a
new album out, let's listen toit. And I'm listening to Midnight's album
with him, and I'm like, this is good. This is a good
(12:56):
song. And then I started listeningto the most popular along with Mallory in
the car all the time and wewould sing out to it and it just
got more and more, and thenI was like, dang, this is
really good. Maybe I should giveher a chance. And so then I
started listening to ever more a littlebit. I listened to Speak Now,
(13:18):
which is the one album that Idid know of hers. I listened to
that again. I found out moreabout her drama and all that stuff,
like all the like behind the scenesstuff, yeah, the reasons for all
the Taylor's versions, Yeah, allthat intel. I got all that and
I was like, dang. Andthen I like did more research about her
as a person and like the stuffthat she does, like charities and things
(13:41):
like that. I was like,Wow, she's a good person, and
like that changed me so much. You have no idea. Once I know
somebody's a good person, watch out. I'm a big fan. And so
now I'm definitely getting into that swiftieLike I'm like, you're getting into your
swifty era, getting into my swiftyera, and Lucas is like not so
(14:07):
much into his swifty era. Idon't I get he doesn't really care about
like the person so much as hecares about the music. Yeah. I
if anything, more than anything,I try to avoid learning about people as
a person. They're artists because alot of the time they're not always very
great people, but they make goodmusic, and I don't want their reputation
(14:33):
to taint the good songs that Ialready know, So I'd rather just kind
of avoid that whole scenario altogether asa very immature way of dealing with it,
for sure, because I should probablycare and I can't see it,
and so I could still listen justclose my eyes for ten nothing else is
(14:54):
happening. It's just he just makessongs. It's all I know. But
I mean I think that like insome ways, getting into the like what
they who they are as people sometimescan also be not necessarily immature, but
can get like toxic because it's justlike it's gossip. Yeah, like at
(15:18):
the end of the day, becausewhat everything that I learn about Taylor Schwift
is definitely from like news sources sometimes, but most of it is tabloid stuff
or what her fans say on TikTokand stuff like that. It gets so
crazy with the conspiracies, and it'sfunny, Like most of the time when
(15:41):
I'm like taking in that stuff,it's like out of irony, like I
want to see this, and Ithink it's funny that people get so deep
into it. But sometimes it catchesme. Sometimes I get caught up into
it, especially with like the meaningsbehind certain songs. Like that matters a
lot to me because I care aboutlyrics, like what the lyrics mean,
(16:03):
and if I'm misinterpreting what the artistwas trying to come across as then like
I would like to know that. But at the same time, like music
should be in the eyes of theIt's very much an art art form,
yeah, And almost all art isin the eye of the beholder. So
when you are listening to music,if the lyrics are well written, which
(16:29):
oh my goodness, if they're notwell written, then it can strike a
chord in anybody. You can getyou feeling those kind of emotions, no
matter what emotion they're trying to provoke, if it's well written. And I
think that you shouldn't have to beswayed by their personal experiences for them to
(16:49):
have made a well written song.Yeah, yeah, I think like it's
also difficult with Taylor Swift because sheis such she's so great at the writing,
but it is so specific what shelike, what she writes about,
she makes is so personal to herselfthat it's hard to put yourself into it.
And because that's what I usually dowith music, is I put myself
(17:11):
into it and then it means somethingto me. But because it's so specific
to her, I'm like, Idon't own a red scarf, so I
got to pay attention to it,like it's a story, Like she's a
character and a story and I'm nota part of that. But like,
so then I get wrapped up inlike Okay, well then what's her story?
Like what is it about? Whois it about? What's going on?
(17:33):
Like, yeah, that's how that'sI think, how I get caught
up into it. But yeah, and now I'm very much in Swifty territory,
and I don't know how I feelabout it. Yeah, it's embarrassing,
to say the least. All mylife, I've kind of been like
a genre jumper, a kind ofI get really into artists for about a
(17:55):
week or two and then move onto the next artist. So like,
I know a lot of songs bya lot of artists, and I guess
Taylor Swift for me was a verylike drawn out version of that, where
like it lasted for like fifteen yearsand then and then I moved on.
Yeah, and I've just kind ofrubbed that off on you. So for
the next fifteen years. So forthe next fifteen years, that's what I'm
(18:18):
going to be, is sticking nextto Taylor Swift. I mean, don't
get me wrong. I still loveall her music, but I'm just moving
on to other artists, other genres, which is why it was really hard
for you to come up with thelist of artists some of your top yeah,
which when I get so when Iwas telling Lucas about doing this podcast
(18:40):
episode, I was like, Iwant to talk about music because that's what
we have like the most in common. Like there's other things, but this
is what we share the most.Like what I wanted to talk about was
the music. And I was tryingto think, like what's an easy thing
for us to do to be ableto come up with together. And I
(19:00):
was like, let me just listlike five, let's just list five of
our favorite artists. And he goes, what, I can't do that.
How am I gonna do that?Because like he listens to so many different
artists it's insane. Like most Ifeel like a lot of people that I
talk to who listen to music orlisten to like have music that they enjoy
(19:27):
or they listen to a lot. It's like they get stuck up on somebody
as their top person, and that'ssomebody that they keep coming back to,
like as soon as that person hasa new album, they're there, they're
ready for it, and I feellike you do that too, but you
do that with so many different likeI don't know how you keep track because
you can't remember to take out thetrash. I don't know how you remember,
(19:48):
Oh it's this day, like RevillieEilish's album was coming out, or
this is happening this day, andoh my gosh, did you know that
this person has an album out? You'll tell me at like ten a the
next day and you listen when itcame out at three am last night.
Yeah. So I think that's what'staking up all my brain power. That's
why I forget to do so manythings. You're just so focused on music
(20:11):
calendar in your brain and lyrics ofanything else, all lyrics and when artists
are coming out with new music. That kind of stuff just kind of really
sticks in my brain. But alot of it is when I follow follow
certain artists on like Instagram and stuffthey'll post about, like their stuff or
Apple Music. Oftentimes, if Ihave the artist favorited, will send me
(20:34):
a notification telling me that they havecome out with a new album. Wait,
I could favor a favorite an artist? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, I don't know. Icould do that, yep, and then
I'll put it in your favorite artiststab. That would have been really helpful
for this list, yep, becauseI actually struggled a little bit too,
(20:55):
Like I didn't I didn't think Iwould. But I think it's because of
you actually that now my music islike it's always been like could be from
any genre, but now it's likethere's so many new artists that are coming
out, especially within like especially afterCOVID. I feel like like COVID like
jumpstarted people to be like, youknow what I could be coming out with
(21:18):
music. I could put it onTikTok, I could you know, just
put it out there and get thename out on social media like this,
This is how I could become popular. And a lot of people have done
that and been really successful with it. So I feel like there's so many
more new artists to listen to.Yes, yeah, So now I have
all these new artists that I'm listeningto that I really really like, And
(21:41):
I'm like, Okay, who weremy old top ones? Okay, I've
always liked this artist. Are theystill in top five now? Yeah?
I don't know, literally don't knowif they've been bumped. How can I
say they've been bumped when I likedthem for the last fifteen years? No
facts? Actually, you know?Yeah, I definitely know. Because as
you were telling me to go lookfor my top five, I struggled.
(22:04):
I was like, I really likethis artist. I don't know where they
where they rank rank, yeah, because I don't really do that in my
head. I just like, Ireally like this artist. I really like
this artist and this artist and thisartist. So it was really difficult for
me to come up with any artistsat all, just because I like know
so many my mind just kind ofblanks from all the options. It's very,
(22:29):
very tough. Yeah, And likeI remember, maybe like a couple
months ago, we started going throughlike our Apple We went through our Apple
music on like computers so that wecould see our top like most played songs
and stuff like that. That didn'thelp me at all with trying to figure
out my favorite artists because all ofmy top songs are songs that I've been
(22:52):
listening to for like ten fifteen yearsor freaking what was it, g Minor
concerto or something was my number onesong that I've listened to, Like something
crazy like six thousand times. Ohmy gosh, it was something crazy like
that. Yeah, but that didn'thelp me at all either, because,
like I think that I've had thisconversation with Mallory before, and I do
(23:15):
think that two of these people arestill on my list. I'm not sure
where exactly, But Lady Gaga hasalways been really high on my list because
of like as an artist, becausewho she has is a person, how
well she is as a singer,And she had her Joanne album that came
out that really spoke to me morethan a lot of her past music had
(23:38):
before. And then it made mego back to her past music and listened
to those songs and actually listen tothe lyrics and stuff. So Lady Gaga
is definitely on the list. I'mnot sure where she is necessarily, right,
Like, I'm not even sure sheis top five, Like I feel
like she's top ten for sure, but like she's somewhere on there. But
(23:59):
like again, the only reason Idon't know exactly where she is is because
maybe two years ago I would havesaid she's number two. Sure. Now
there's so many other artists I've beenlistening to it's so hard. You're welcome
yeah. Oh yeah. An artistthat I've since almost day one of listening
(24:25):
to their music has been super highon my list is NF and if he's
a Christian rapper, but his musicdon't scream Christian lyrics, which is very
like, he doesn't swear, Hedoesn't at all in his any songs,
which is super like kind of refreshingin the rap industry because it's just pure
(24:49):
like lyrical genius. His relying onChris Burt's is like a crutch, right,
Yeah, So his songs can inevoke so much emotion that like,
I'm not a crier, but someof his songs they'll get me tearing up.
Yeah, especially if I'm like aloneand like really thinking about like maybe
(25:12):
his experiences that he might have gonethrough through the songs. It is so
emotional. He's got such good emotionalwordplay in his songs. Yeah. I
remember you were like going through allof his music before you went to his
concert. Yeah, for like monthsyou were like I need to know every
word. Yeah, any make sureI'm on it and I'll tell you what
(25:36):
it worked. Yeah, I wentto that. I went to that concert
in Salt Lake. Dude, thebest concert I've ever been to. It
was so good. Yeah, that'scrazy. I feel like I haven't been
to a lot of concerts necessarily.Like my first concert was the Jonas Brothers.
(25:56):
Okay, wow, back in there, you know, back in the
heyday yea before they reformed again afterNick Jonas you know, did his own
thing for a while. Yeah, way before that. I was. I
was there when they were like, you know, singing like angsty teenagers,
and I was here for it becauseI also was an angsty teenager. But
(26:22):
that was my first concert and Iremember having that experience and I was like,
didn't realize that I loved the concertpart of it. I just thought,
I'm in love with the Jonas Brothersand that's why this is so much
fun. And then when I wentto California, I would go to concerts
with Angie for I would go toher. I would go with her to
(26:44):
concerts for Jason Moraz and I likeJason Ras as an artist. I never
thought I would think of him asbeing in the top ten, but like,
I think he might be in therejust because of how loving his music
is. Like it's so like it'sall about like inclusion and like love and
caring and this like beautiful, peacefulnessor whatever, and his concert freaking great.
(27:08):
Like I feel like there's so manyartists, so many artists who live
are kind of like not as goodas they are in the studio because there's
so much studio stuff that they doto like not necessarily make them sound good,
but to make the song sound goodthat live it's just not the same
to some rasp better somehow wow inperson. Really yeah, And I didn't
(27:33):
even like him that much. WhenI went to his it was literally like
a fortieth like his fortieth birthday celebration. It was like listen to all like,
you guys love my music, andyou love all of my songs,
and you know all of my songs, and so this is a concept for
that person. And I was like, I know three of your songs.
Yeah, I know the top threesongs that you've ever played. Yeah,
(27:55):
I know, I'm yours. Ifyou play that, I'm good, Like
I'm gonna be wa hands back andforth. But at that concert he had
Sarah Brelli's who I really liked, yeah a lot, and Colby Yeah,
Colby Kelly, there you go.But yeah, I still have the videos
from that of like my snapchats fromthat because I'm so freaking great, I
(28:18):
was crying. I wasn't even drunk. That's crazy because I was twenty and
it was illegal, so of courseI wasn't drunk obviously, obviously. But
yeah, So that's when I realizedthat I think I just like concerts.
I think I just enjoy seeing peoplelive when they do it well, right,
(28:40):
Yeah, And if they're a reallygood singer, almost always their concerts
are going to be really good becausethey're not so much using kind of the
the atmosphere that a studio can giveyou. They're used to playing in front
of thousands of people and sounding good, which is very difficult for sure.
(29:03):
And I think like for Jason Raslak, he got his start literally playing in
like coffee shops and stuff, solike he's used to playing live in front
of people, and like so manyof his songs have like you know,
scatting in it and stuff, andit was just fun to be there and
his scat being completely different than likethe studio version. It was like a
(29:23):
new song, it felt like, because I'm like doing the scat on the
studio version and he's scatting something else, and I'm like we're collaboratingting and it
just felt like so crazy, sodifferent, and I loved it. But
yeah, speaking of concerts, Iam trying my damnedest to get us to
(29:45):
go to a Hosier concert at theend of the summer because I think I'm
in love with Hosier. I thinkthis is my new you know, Jonas
Brothers, yuh. I can't evenblame you who's He makes some great music
and I would love to go tothat concert, just damn if those tickets
(30:07):
are not expensive. He's like andthis is none of what I'm going to
say right now is about the music. He is tall, he's handsome,
he's Irish, need you say anymore? Feminist, he's an ally that's
crazy. That's crazy. But I'vealways I always liked his song take Me
(30:29):
to Church. When that came out, that was so good and I loved
the meaning behind it and I lovedthe like the cadence of his voice.
It was so unique. I feellike to most songs that were super popular,
and that one was really popular songyea'rocket, Like, I don't think
there's anybody who at least doesn't knowthat song. Yeah, and so like
(30:53):
when that came out, I reallyloved that song. I learned it for
forwards, backwards, sideways, sideways. You could sing like two words of
the song. I know exactly whereyou are. But yeah, he's definitely
up there. I'm pretty sure he'stoo. Like if I had to definitively
(31:15):
say top five, he's number twoand Lady Gaga is somewhere somewhere underneath that
for sure, Who would you sayis your number one? Find out my
answer next week in the next episode. Because this is the end of this
one. I split this episode intotwo parts because me and Lucas definitely talk
(31:37):
for a long time about music. In next week's episode, you'll hear us
finish up this conversation about music andgo into playing a little game together.
Thanks for listening, and see younext week.
