Join Mariah and her brother Lucas for part two of their engaging conversation in this episode of The Mariah Effect. In this installment, they dive into their shared love for music, discussing artists like Labyrinth and Finneas. Mariah talks about her need to connect emotionally to music to enjoy it, while Lucas shares his different perspective and why he doesn't connect with musicals. They also reflect on their fun but lopsided experiences playing video games together, including a memorable camping trip where Lucas's superior gaming skills became evident. Despite Lucas's teasing, he admits he can't think of any negative attributes of Mariah. They touch on their relationship with their sister Malory, who, as Mariah's best friend, would do anything for her, even excuse murder. To cap off the episode, Mariah and Lucas play a game called Wavelength to really show how much they think alike and how well they understand each other.

(00:23):
Hey, everybody, welcome to theMariah Effect. I'm Riah, and let's
dig in. So if you rememberfrom last episode, me and Lucas were
discussing music at great length, andI kind of left it on a cliffhanger.
Originally, it was all recorded together, and I just was going through

(00:48):
an editing and just knew that Ididn't want to cut out so many of
the things that we were talking about. I also didn't want to make like
this really long episode when I literallyjust started off this season explaining how I
want to do shorter episodes. Soin the spirit of that, I decided

(01:10):
to split this in too. Butwhen I did that, some of the
editing that I did to try andmake it shorter originally, once it's kind
of cut out, it's cut outfor sure. And so I had cut
out a piece accidentally, which islike right after, like right where the

(01:34):
last episode left off. I cuta piece right after that, and so
that's gone forever. But so I'mjust gonna explain a little bit what I
was talking about before we get backinto the episode. But basically, Lucas
had asked me what my number oneartist I think, Like, who I

(01:56):
think my number one artist would be, and I was starting to explain about
how there's this TV show called Euphoria, which I'm sure anybody listening has at
least heard of it. Whether ornot you've watched it is up to you.
But I started watching this show kindof begrudgingly because I knew that it

(02:20):
was about drugs, and I'm nota big person, like a big fan
of TV shows where it has acentral theme about drug abuse or drug you
know, selling, or anything likethat, because I feel like a lot
of times it doesn't show the realityof drug use in the way that it

(02:43):
should, which is my own personalopinion. But that's neither here, they
aren't there. That has very littleto do with the conversation that me and
Lucas are having in this episode. But I started watching Euphoria, and in
watching you, there's a lot ofmusical pieces to it, a lot of

(03:05):
songs that are done by the sameperson. And I'm explaining that here and
talking about how that's kind of whatgot me to be more involved with this
artist that I'm about to explain here. So sorry for the abrupt like cut
in and the weird explanation before, but I think you guys will really like

(03:31):
this episode. And after we're donetalking about music, we're going to play
a little game that I think, honestly everybody should play with people that are
super close to them, because Ithink it's a good way to see like
how close you are with somebody, like how well you know each other?
Actually, so gear ready for theepisode. Here I am explaining the rest

(03:57):
of the rest of what I wassaying. And in the show there's like
a lot of musical elements, andLucas isn't so much a musical guy,
but I am. And so whenI was watching the show, there was
all sorts of like musical elements thatwere thrown in there, and every single

(04:19):
one of them was done by Labyrinth, who i'd heard before. Obviously the
song Jealous Love. That song sogood, so much emotion in that,
And I started doing like a deepdive into Labyrinth and his music and like
all the stuff that he puts together, and it could be like a thirty

(04:42):
five second song. It's on aplaylist somewhere in my music because it is
so well done, it is sogood, and like it just like it
makes like my brain buzz, youknow, Yeah, don't get what I
mean, Like it like it liketickles the inside of my brain and makes

(05:02):
me feel good. Yeah, youknow, even if it's a song that's
like supposed to be about like themost heartbreaking thing, it's like, yeah,
give it some of this good stuff. Yeah. And so that's the
biggest reason why he's number one, because he you know, produces all of
his music. He like writes everything, he you know, puts it all

(05:26):
together like he's the leading guy.And I find that so super impressive.
And yeah, nobody nobody makes mybrain buz quite like he does. That's
a very funny way to put it. It's a rat effect, you know
what I mean. Yeah, forsure. Okay, who I know this

(05:47):
was really hard for you, butyou gotta give me, like, who
do you think could possibly take numberone for you? So number one,
like in my mind, Oh,it's so hard for me to choose because
right now, as of like rightthis very moment, I'm very like,

(06:10):
I don't want to say obsessed, but like I'm very much into an artist
called Double Camp. He's not superpopular, but his music is always very
upbeat and very like I think maybeespecially since like there's a lot of hard
stuff going on in my life.Right now and listening to his music kind

(06:30):
of just makes me smile no matterwhat's going on in life right now.
And his music is always very catchyand very easy to stanthing along to almost
But if it doesn't have a greatatmosphere to it, I don't know.

(06:51):
I don't know what you would say. But as for like Maybe just all
time, who I think Maybe isa very very good singer songwriter and will
almost always have my heart. PhineasO'Connell mhm. Another one that I love
him outside so good. His hisvoice is so smooth and he's such a

(07:15):
great songwriter. Gosh, if hismusic doesn't have just a striking in the
heart kind of tune and everything, like the way the music is choreography,
Cork, that's the one choreographed,ye, the way his music is choreographed,

(07:36):
and the way he the lyrics everything. If he's trying to convey an
emotion, a feeling, he doesit well every single time. So those
two right now sitting at the top, can't pick which one though it's so
typical. But I get what youmean, Like I feel like like what

(08:00):
you're saying about Double Camp, LikeI feel like most of their music is
definitely one that's like, it's thetype of music that you want to listen
to, like with a friend inthe car. Yes, you know,
And that's just like just across theboard good music because it's like it's it
makes you feel good. It's somethingthat you can sing along to together.

(08:22):
It's something that like like it justit just gives road trip energy. Yeah,
I very much feel like it's aIt's the kind of music that anybody
can get into. I don't knowof anybody. Well, maybe a couple
people who are like strictly like rockand like skill it and stuff, But

(08:43):
other than that, I don't knowa single person who would listen to Double
Camp and think that it is bad, Yeah, bad or even subpar.
Right, So yeah, for sure, I definitely think Double Camp sits right
up there at the top. Andlike with Phineas Man, he's like,
man he can. He does sexyso well in that song new Girl,

(09:05):
Yes, oh my goodness, hedoes sexy, he does sweet, he
does loving, he does you know, fun like existential crisis but we're still
happy about it. Yep. Youknow what is it? All the kids
are dying? Yeah, literally, like you know what I mean. And
that's just it's I feel like it'sso relatable. Yeah, you know,

(09:28):
and that's a big thing about musictoo, Like if it feels like you
like that what they're singing about issomething that you have been in, a
situation you've been in, or somethingan emotion that you've felt, it makes
it so that you can connect tothat and then in turn connect to the
artist in a way. Yeah.I feel like no matter your age range,

(09:52):
he's always a very good artist. And his album Optimist Dude, if
that is not like midlife crisis typevibe, that's crazy, like or like
quarter live Dude, quarter Life Crisisthere is so good. Like his his

(10:13):
song is only a Lifetime All thekids are dying Dude, you just kind
of sinks into the heart. Yeah. Yeah, So, like with us
struggling so much with trying to pickpeople, it's fair enough to say that,
like we love music because music acrossthe board, as long as it's

(10:37):
something that you can relate to,as long as it's something that like can
mean something to us, like acrossthe board, we love it. Yeah.
I think that for you, musicthat you relate to is almost necessary
for you to enjoy it. Forme, if it's well written. I
say that, but a lot ofthe times musicals are very well written.

(11:01):
I just have a hard time becauseI think it might have something to do
with the fact that I feel likeI'm delving into the artists like lives if
I like when I listen to musicalsand stuff, because it's always very much
like has something to do with somethingthat you should already know because you watch
the musical quote unquote, but Inever watched the musical, and so just

(11:26):
listening to the songs on their owncould make me almost feel like I'm lost,
feel like I'm not really understanding reallywhat's going on, which is maybe
a good indicator that, like forme anyway, it's not as well written
as I thought it would be.But I think that if I can,

(11:48):
it's the kind of music that getslike stuck in your head, Like I
really like those kind of music andthe songs that invoke an emotion. So
that's very much important for me whenI'm listening to music, and I feel
like for you, it has todo with like whether or not you can
relate and whether or not like youcan put yourself in that scenario. Yeah,

(12:13):
I think that like one of thebiggest things for me when it comes
to like musicals, like, yeah, a lot of the times I want
to listen, like to the wholesoundtrack because I want the whole experience,
because you're right, sometimes there's asong where it's like you don't understand what's
going on because you don't know whothe voices are because a lot of times
it's like a duet or something. And I think, for me, like

(12:35):
the reason I like musical so much, which is I feel like a big
reason why they're hated on so muchsometimes is because they are kind of ridiculous,
Like they're kind of campy in away that they're like pointing out things
that are obvious. But that's kindof the point. But another thing that

(13:00):
me and Lucas have a lot incommon with is video games, although he's
really good at them and I reallysuck at them, which, by the
way, like I have to saythis because we went camping recently, and
when we were camping, we didlike a roast session basically, which started

(13:24):
out as Lucas, I don't rememberwhat you were saying. You were saying
something about like something that you're badat or something that you're good at or
whatever, and I said, oh, are we saying things that you're bad
at, because I have a bunchI have some of those. I have
a couple of to say or whatever. And then I said, but I
have good ones too, and You'relike, no, no, let's hear
them. Tell me what they are. And so we did like a roasting

(13:48):
session where I said some stuff aboutLucas and then like afterwards, I felt
really bad. So I was like, oh, okay, say bad things
about me, tell me bad thingsabout me. And literally the only thing
that he said was that I'm badat video games, which is something I
have said for years and time andtime and again. He goes, you're
not bad, You're not bad.You you just you just have to like

(14:11):
you just have to practice, likeyou just have to do it enough and
then you'll be good at it.And I started to believe him. And
then literally this past weekend, we'recamping and the one bad thing he says
to me is I'm bad at videogames. If I'm gonna be completely on
it, it was simply because Icould not think of a single bad thing
to say about you. It wasnot one thing that I could just like,
uh, grab off the shelf.Yeah, because I just I'm very

(14:37):
I don't think about that. Yeah, if I don't like something about somebody,
then sure I could probably pull something. Yeah, but like if I
think you're a good person in general, I kind of just like wipe all
the negative aspects off the shoulder andkind of they later maybe come back to
bite me, but yeah, Idon't think about them. That is so

(15:00):
similar to Malury because I feel likeI feel like like I could literally run
somebody over with my car and Malorywould be like, yeah, but what
did they do? Yeah? Butwhy did you do that? But like
but like what did they do toyou? Like, like tell me,
like like tell me what really happened, because there's no way that my best
friend would just hit somebody for noreason. And I could be like just

(15:24):
like they looked at me and theyand she would be like, oh,
yeah, they're racist, you know, Like she would make up a store
a story of how like I wasnot in the wrong because literally that like
that's just how she is about me, and that's kind of how I am
about her too. Like when you'veknown somebody for so long and you you
feel like you know them inherently tobe a good person to not do something

(15:46):
that, like you wouldn't to notdo something that would be outside of what
you considered to be good than likeany little thing that could possibly come up.
You're like, no, but really, why did you do that?
Like, I know you didn't justdo that because you're a jerk, you
know, right, so you canlike explain why anything. Yeah, so

(16:08):
I get that. I get that. But yeah, so video games,
even though we're on opposite sides ofgood and bad at that, and also
just games in general, I feellike whenever I want to play like board
games or something, like, theonly person who is consistently like yeah is

(16:29):
Lucas, and so like it getsto a point where I try and come
up with like games that we canplay just with each other because so many,
so many board games are like threeto four, three or four people
like as a minimum, right, which is just ass when when everybody is
all adult and has lives. Soone of the games that I did,

(16:52):
I can't even remember what it's callednow, Like what the hell did I
wave length wavelength length wavelength where likeone person will think of a number in
their head, not sharing what thenumber is, and the other person is
like, okay, let me,give you some categories, and you tell

(17:12):
me like something within that category thataligns with that number in your head,
and they do like a couple ofthose, and then they try and guess
what the number was based off ofthe other person. It's answers, and
so we're gonna do that because Ithink it's fun and a good way to
kind of end this episode. Doyou want to go first? Editing Mariah

(17:40):
here, Lucas and I talk fora minute and decide that he's gonna go
first, okay, and then thosewho are listening can also guess. We're
not gonna tell you what the numberis. You're gonna also guess with me.
Okay, I think of the week, where does that number fall?

(18:03):
I'm gonna go with a solid Friday. Oh Friday, huh dang. What's
funny is me and Lucas have talkedabout what our favorite days are, and
I genuinely don't remember where Friday fallsfor him, because Thursdays are like his
favorite day because he gets to,you know, do volleyball and roller skating

(18:26):
and stuff like that, which heloves. Friday, I don't. That's
the day after like, but hegets to work on Fridays, so that
might be a pretty good day.So I'm gonna say it's above of five
right now, that's my guess sofar. Let me give you. Let
me do another category. Hm hmm, breakfast foods. O dang, breakfast

(18:59):
foods. Lucas is not like sweets, so yeah, let's uh, let's
go with a solid scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs. Okay, I have to
keep in mind that this is Lucasfor you. It's not about me.
It's not about me. It's aboutLucas. Scrambled eggs. That's so gross.

(19:22):
Okay, Okay, protein protein, you like protein. They're not great.
It's not like the best breakfast thatyou could get, but it's probably
definitely above a five. If youhad said Rhese's puffs, I would have

(19:44):
known immediately what it was. Okay, holidays, we're going to go for
Halloween. I don't know how youfeel about Halloween at all. You don't

(20:04):
like sweets. I'm okay, I'mgonna say six. That's a pretty far
off. It was an eight,an eighty. Scrambled eggs an I love
eggs. Oh my, we're usuallyreally good about this, really good at

(20:26):
this game. But the reason, the reason you didn't know that was because
when we're together, I don't wedon't eat eggs. Yeah, we don't
eat breakfast. We don't eat breakfastperiod. I don't usually eat breakfast anyway,
either, But I say breakfast.I don't know that was wild.
I don't know why I said breakfastfoods. I guess what I was thinking
in my head is like dinner istoo broad. Yeah, that's what I

(20:51):
was thinking. I think. AndI like Halloween because it's a great time
to get with friends and even ifyou're not gonna go like eat all the
candy or whatever, because I'm certainlynot going to it's a great time to
get to friends, maybe go toa party, that kind of stuff.
I like dressing up. Now I'mthinking about I told I've totally forgot about

(21:12):
Friday, Like it was literally thefirst thing that you said. I totally
forgot about it, Like I didnot keep Friday in my mind at all.
That was wild. I can't believeI said six. That sucks.
I was like Friday. I likeFriday. Dang. If I had remembered
about the Friday thing, I thinkI would have said probably seven, yeah,
which would have been closer, wouldhave been closer, which would have

(21:33):
been acceptable? Right? Okay, let me think of a number. Okay,
I have a number. Okay, let's go chores around the house,
this is for me. Okay, yeah, right, laundry Okay, how

(21:57):
about colors of dry erase markers ona whiteboard? Oh? Okay, lime
green? That's bad. That isbad. I'm like shooting around three range

(22:22):
here. That's bad. Alright, let's go. Uh oh man, I've
got like so many different topics, but I'm wondering which one I think can
round it out the easiest forms ofartistic release. Hmmm, that's a tough

(22:56):
huh. Forms of artistic release.I'm like trying to think of all the
things that could be in that categoryso properly, there's a lot. Pick
what would be where my number is? Hm? Hmm okay, rage painting,

(23:19):
rage painting. Wait, that's actuallykind of fun. That's tough.
That's a lot of questions now, right, shoot, I'm gonna shoot around.
Well, let me think. Sowhat were the questions I asked you?

(23:40):
I asked you artistic release chores andcolorado white color on a white board?
You said lime green, lime green, laundry and rage painting. Mm
hmmm, we're gonna shoot for likea three maybe, yeah, it's three.

(24:07):
Yeah, it's three. So likewith chores, the only two chores,
Like, if I had a listof ten chores that you do around
the house, only two chores Icould think of that would be below laundry
would be dishes and cleaning the toilet. Yeah, dishes only suck because there's
so many people living here. Man, Dishes are freaking ridiculous in that house.

(24:33):
I swear the sink will be cleanand then I'll come to my room
for an hour and I'll come back. Yeah, it's just crazy, ridiculous.
That's crazy. You want another go? Yeah, you want a redemption.
I'm feeling so crappy about being toooff. Yeah, that's crazy.
Like, I don't think I've everreally done that bad. It's the pressure,

(24:56):
the pressure getting to Okay, Igot it, you got you got
something? Okay? Power tools?Um wow, I was not ready for
that one. Was it ready forcolor on a whiteboard? Enough? Enough?

(25:22):
Um? Shoot? Power tools?Um, we're gonna go for a
saws all. It's a cut throughstuff. Okay, Yeah, that seems
pretty fun. I feel like thatwould be higher Okay, inclination. You

(25:51):
don't see it, but I waslike staring at like his face, waiting
to see if he gave anything away. Okay, pets, dang, dude,
that's tough. I've got like wemight learn a little something about Lucas

(26:15):
here. I've got like three inthe same category, in the same range.
In my mind, We're gonna shootfor a wild one bearded dragons.
Uh oh uh oh okay, okay, got you. I think I think

(26:36):
I noted it. I want tosay one more thing, okay, uh
huh, something that will help likesolidify the answer that I have in my
head. Sports. Wow, youjust made that so easy for yourself.

(27:03):
Volleyball t I knew it. Iknew it was. Let me talk the
number of pictures of this bearded dragonthat Lucas knows is astronomical in his phone,
like so many pictures of this beardeddragon. It is so cute.

(27:27):
I'm feeling so much better about that. But that was kind of easy.
That one was. That one waspretty kind of easy. Okay, let's
see if you can do as badand I feel a lot better. Okay,
Okay, I have I have anumber okay, ways to listen to

(27:48):
music. Mm hmm, dany okayon your phone out loud. Okay,
that's not like terrible, but thereare way better options. So my thought

(28:14):
process right now is about maybe fivemaybe six. That's okay, but like
definitely not great. Like it's notunderwater or anything underwater, while you're kidding
eaten by one maybe two because notat all so funny. Okay, No,

(28:52):
okay, let's go winter weather items, whether that be like clothing or
utility anything that's a tough one.Yeah, that's hard to pinpoint. Yeah,

(29:18):
I'm basically just solidifying myself that it'snot any of the polar opposites Long
Johns. Okay, all right, dude, I'll tell you what Long Johns

(29:40):
have saved my life. People onour comments are gonna have crazy opinions about
my answers to some of these LongJohns are actually clutch, like a winter
like camping long Johns are clutch. But I definitely don't think that you have
very my opinions on Long John's.So I'm gonna shoot still around a five

(30:04):
or six. So do I haveanother one? Okay, We're gonna go
for forms of exercise, ways toexercise rather hmmm, jumping rope. Okay,

(30:33):
yeah, I'm sticking it right atfive. No, where is it
at, dude, Dude, Iwas right there. I like to jump
rope. Better ways. There's betterways to get exercise, there's better ways
to like jumping. It's just notlike one of the better ones. And

(30:59):
it's not like something like I mean, if you own a jump rope,
sure, but like I don't knowa lot of people that do. I
don't jump rope exactly. I don'tknow a lot of people who own a
jump rope. I don't know alot of gyms that would have jump rope
for you to use. So it'sjust kind of like a it's like a
niche. Yeah, I was prettyclose, dude, I was the entire

(31:19):
time. Yeah, you were, you went, you were going five six,
and I was trying to keep myface. Dude, even as I
could. You should try poker,I have oh, never would have guessed.
I. I do pretty okay atpoker. The problem is is I
have a great poker face. Ijust have shit. Look Yeah, like

(31:42):
I'm good at bluffing that I havesomething, but I never have something.
So if I continually pretend like Ido and I never do people are always
gonna be like, well, younever get anything, so obviously don't have
anything. Yeah, yeah, especiallyand like people are new to poker and
they're like, I've got great cardsand they've got the pocket toosy. Nope,

(32:08):
it's so funny. I've got greatcards. They're the same card.
Well, we equally have now donegood enough and bad enough that I'm okay
to be done. Shall we wrapthis up? Yeah? So this episode
has been super special. I loveyou a lot, and I feel like

(32:32):
we're super close. And at theend of the summer, you're going to
be going to Australia. I knowhow exciting is that. That's so freaking
cool. Lucas got his mission call, which he could explain a lot better
than I can what that is,but I'm not gonna So it's a long
process. Basically, in my religion, we serve missions, which is a

(32:59):
prosely in another area that's not home. So it's funded usually by us,
but if we don't have like me, like I'll be funding it and that
we get to go to. Luckilyfor me, I get to go to

(33:20):
another country and I get to teachpeople who have never usually have never even
heard of the Church of Jesus Christof Lady Stints. I get to teach
them about what we believe about theGospel and hopefully bring people closer to Christ

(33:43):
to Yeah, it's gonna be agreat time. I'm super excited. Yeah,
it's really exciting because for like thisgeneration of children in the family who
have gone on missions, Lucas isthe first to go out of the country.
Ye. So that's really exciting. And he's going to be going you

(34:05):
know, right, I guess likeOctober. That would be in like the
middle of summer. Well I meanhere, oh yeah, here, like
like the middle of walls when he'sgoing to be leaving and he's going to
get there and it's going to besummer all over again. Yep. So
I'm going to go through two summers. It's gonna be great because you love
summer. I love summer. Butyeah, he's super excited. I'm super

(34:27):
excited and ignoring my like you know, overwhelming sadness that he's not going to
be here for two years. Butyeah, So I'm glad that we were
able to do this and talk aboutthis because I wanted you on the podcast
to be able to talk about musicbecause when am I going to talk about
music by myself? Yeah? Facts, freaking loser. Yeah, I could

(34:47):
talk about music for hours and hoursyeah. Facts. But yeah, So
this has been this episode. Thismight become like a two parter because we
talked a little bit longer than Iexpected. But that's okay. Tune in
for the next episode. I don'tknow what I'm gonna be talking about right

(35:07):
now, but tune in. Thanksfor listening. H m hm hm,
I don't want to anymore. Wait, how are you going to say it?

(35:30):
Bye? Guys, perfect

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
