(00:00):
Our next guest is old enough toremember probably rocking out to this in the
seventies the back of his Mustang Rosebudin high school. Hugh Mill join,
I don't know what's going on inthe back of his mustang. I think
you can imagine what was going on. He was doing a spreadsheet. Was
okay, hell out of here here? How are you man? Exactly?
Hey, before we get to someactual sports talking conversation, we got some
(00:24):
questions Seahawks, Huskies whatever. Wejust had a little baby comeback tournament there
on the radio show. Uh,what'd you think of what you heard?
Well? I think what I heardon Hold, I think it's all.
Everybody is a good name. Iwould just say that the Sonics one time
had a two time All Star whowas first team All NBA Defense, who
(00:48):
was fifth in the league in MVPvoting and was a NBA Finals MVP.
He was twenty five years old.His name was Dennis Johnson. You know
the story. He traded for Paulwest Fall, who was twenty nine going
on thirty, who was, yes, an offensive player, but west Wall
for the Sonics played like thirty fortygames. Dennis Johnson went to the Suns
(01:11):
at least two or three years ofAll Star went to the Celtics. Larry
Bird said the following quote, definitelythe best player I've ever played with in
my life. That's Larry Bird aboutDennis Johnson. Dennis Johnson, they won
two titles and number three. DennisJohnson's jersey hangs from the rafters in the
Boston Garden. That hurts. Hewas on the list. He was replaced
(01:32):
by Steve Hutchinson, which I thinkis ridiculous. The number eight, I
concur with you, one thousand. You know who else wasn't There was Don
James. He wasn't on the listeither. We created to DJs. I
mean you only got to pick eightguys, right, I mean who would
have been, honestly, Hugh, who would have been more impactful? Dennis
Johnson staying with the Sonics or SteveHutchinson staying with the Seahawks. Well that's
(01:57):
hard because there's twenty two guys ina on a football course, and a
bunch of those guys that DJ wona championship with. We're getting older,
Freddie, you know, Jack Wally, all those guys. I mean,
I believe it that they beat theBears in two thousand and six. If
they have Steve Hutchinson the offensive line, they go back to the NFC Championship
game. Yeah, well, DJ, you know, like he put the
(02:17):
lockdown on David Thompson Skywalker. Itwas just his his toughness and all.
But getting to Hutchinson, Look,I don't think you evaluate a guard.
You can evaluate to guard this way. Let's say you're gonna play the forty
nine ers on money on a footballbig game. Let's say is Steve Hutchinson
he sprains his ankle and practice andhe's out. Is he gonna move the
line? Unlikely? If if hedid, it would be nominal. That's
(02:39):
not what we're talking about. We'retalking about a team that was the in
the Super Bowl, that was literallythe fabric, the glue who closed the
circle of physicality. It'd be liketake look at a guy in a tuxedo.
If you take a tuxedo and pullout all the seams on everything,
(03:00):
you still have the tuxedo parts, but it is completely unraveled. He Steve
Hutchinson and and Mike Holmgren I don'tthink would bristle with this because he said
this about Bill Walsh. So thosethose teams were so good and in their
precision passing the ball, and hasselBeck was a starter in the Pro Bowl
and what have you. But therewas always a question, hey, are
(03:21):
they tough enough? Well, SteveHutchinson was the guy that was there.
If you had to ask opponents forhis teammates, who would be the last
guy you'd want to get an octagonwith, it would be Steve Hutchinson because
Walter Jones was phenomenal. But WalterJones' idea of dominating football game has showed
me the statu sheet at the endof the game, and this is the
words out of Walter Jones. Helooks across the defensive end, the right
(03:43):
defensive end. No sackles, nosacks, no pressures, no hurries,
no tackles. That's domination. SteveHutchinson said, how many times did I
move that man five yards or morefrom the line scrimmage? How many times
did I pancake it? How manytimes did I bury him? Does he
know after three hours that I'm thesuperior man? He had that infectious toughness
about him, and so I thinkthat the team knew how he u The
(04:10):
Ruskal had had absolutely stepped on aRake on this one, that that that
homegun was furious and it ripped thesoul, particularly the toughness soul, right
out of a super Bowl team.So I just think the measure of it
is not just what does an offensiveguard do? What does every other player
on that team do? In termsof the aftermath of oh my god,
(04:31):
you ripped our heart out? Well, Hugh, we don't have an Steve
Hutchinson on the Husky offensive line. That's for damn sure. I like one.
I would like one. But thereis a little bit of debate on
what type of disaster and what sizedisaster will the Husky offensive line be if
we can put it that way,if we want to put it negatively,
(04:51):
I wouldn't put it that way.By the way, what can you go,
Well, I just won't know howconcerned we are by it. How
concern should we be about this Huskyoffensive line? Well, I think there's
a lot of concern until it's proven. I mean, you just you're fresh
in your mind as a Joe Moorewinning offensive line. Now, it's it's
extremely rare. You know, Ican't have a recall. It's very rare.
(05:14):
You'd lose all the starters off thatteam and that they'd all be imports.
Now it's a new day and age. And you know, if a
guy comes in let's say from OhioState, O say, okay, that's
great, Well what were the circumstances? Was he not going to play at
Ohio State or did he want moremoney? Like those are two different questions.
And then for guys that are comingup from let's say Mountain West or
(05:35):
other lesser conferences, those type ofplayers, they might be a sending and
it might be a similar equation like, hey, they were highly valued by
their team and the Huskies beat themout over you know, five or six
other top level Power five conference schools. Okay, you say, that's the
makings of a hell of a player. So how how you you came?
(05:59):
You know that That is just partof the equation. It's why and how
right? And and then the otherpart is, in my opinion, of
all the units in a football teamon both sides of the ball, the
offensive line coach is the most importantposition coach on the field because of the
cohesion required. And I would saysecondary would be number two, but offensive
(06:24):
line. You had in Huff ahell of an offensive line coach. Now,
look you know, Brendan Carroll byall accounts, probably a good offensive
line coach. But I think thatthere's so many unknown parts. I think
it's concerning. Yeah, I justI mean, I do like the fact
that their schedule is kind of lightearly, so some time for these guys
(06:45):
to gel and figure things out beforethings get crazy in the second half.
But yeah, if they had abunch of good players coming back, you'd
feel great. They had a bunchof bad players coming back, you'd feel
terrible. They got a bunch ofnobody's from nowhere that you've never heard of.
So I think it's unfair for usjust say, look, I have
no idea, and the fact thatyou have no idea about maybe the most
important position on the team, Ithink that in itself makes it concerning.
(07:08):
But here Millin's with us and HughRyan Grubb obviously starting on Wednesday getting his
first crack a NFL training camp.I think all of us were super duper
impressed with what he did at youdub. But for the average fan who
maybe did not watch a lot ofHusky football or didn't watch it close enough,
can you kind of give us atake on what Seahawk fans will notice
(07:29):
right away about this offense that makesit unique. Well, I think,
first of all, to just makean assertion about what you'll notice, I
think it would be a little bitpremature. I mean, all we can
do. The sensible reply to thatquestion would be we have to wait and
see, because all we know iswhat Grub did at Washington and what he
did at Fresno. And I studiedJay Hayner's junior year or you know,
(07:54):
second to last year. I studiedit more when he had Jeff Tedford.
But we just say, okay, what's his nature? And really, you
say, okay, I can giveyou all the profile of what Grub was
and how I think he distinguishes himself, and I'm about to do that.
But that's with the personnel that hehad at Washington. Before the ball would
(08:16):
snap. At Washington, for example, the Huskies were in shotgun ninety two
point one percent at the time theNFL averages seventy one percent. Again,
this is before they snapped the ball. Eleven personnel that's three receivers, one
running back, one tight end.The Huskies were seventy nine percent, the
NFL averages sixty two percent. Tothe Times that they use two plus tight
(08:39):
ends. You think of the Huskieshaving great tight ends right west over and
and Colp had a hell of acombine and got drafted, and all the
Huskies were under twenty percent nineteen pointseven percent two plus tight ends. The
league average is twenty seven percent. So even before we snapped the ball,
we've got some aspects. You say, Okay, that's a little that's that's
significently off the norm with respects tothe NFL. But again, we don't
(09:05):
know how Grub's going to be withthe Seahawk personnel. Let's talk about Penix
was in the pocket eighty eight percent. That's a high number conservative protection for
the Huskies. When the Husky offensefaced a four man rush from their opponent's
defense, four hundred and thirty twoof five hundred and seventy five attempts the
Huskies had had When you look atthat four man rush, of those four
(09:31):
hundred thirty two snaps, the Huskieshad two or more extra blockers thirty seven
percent of the time. That isfifty one percent above the average of their
top opponents last year. Does thatmake sense to me? Like meaning they're
leaving the Huskies are only facing afour man rush, Typical would be you
rush, you block with five. But the Huskies are saying, no,
(09:54):
let's protect penis, let's keep runningback in, let's keep a tight end.
And they were keeping U so they'revery conservative in their protection schemes.
Two more throwing the ball deep. Here's a couple numbers. Roma Dunsa on
every calculus was the recipient of themost deep balls of any receiver. To
give you an idea, plus twentyyards are more from the line of scrimmage.
(10:16):
In fifteen games, Roma dunes Aforty nine attempts. Remember that forty
nine temps fifteen games. DK metcalflast twenty six in sixteen games. Wow,
if you go by the rate pergame, Romadunesa more than double DK
thirty. How about thirty plus?Really deep down the field Roma Dunesa twenty
three, DK twelve and again DKhad one more games. So and then
(10:39):
go just go routes. That wasall over the field. Let's just talk
specifically about go routes up the sideline. Romadonsay twenty five catches and forty six
go routes for ten touchdowns. That'sprodigious, well over fifty percent DK Metcalf
ten catches on twenty eight attempts foronly four touchdowns. So Roma Dounsey had
(11:00):
exactly two and a half times asmany opportunities on go routes and exactly two
and a half times as many touchdowns. So and then and then lastly the
out routes. Michael Pennix led thenation in balls thrown outside the numbers.
The gap between first and second placewas greater than the gap between second and
(11:22):
twenty eight. So when you werewatching the Huskies, what am my?
What picture are on painting? Youremember it? Pennick's throwing the ball down
the damn field and outside the numbers. Now, I'm not going to compare
the numbers outside because with the pros, because the pro's numbers are are further
inside, closer to the hash andblah blah blah. But those are some
(11:43):
things we can look for. Thosewere the attributes that we saw in a
Ryan Grubb offense at Washington. Wellwhy do we do this? We're up
against the break and we got afew more things we want to throw at.
Yeah, we figure it's Friday, you got no plans, So what
the hell is hanging out with usfor a little bit. You've mentioned before
that you think Mike McDonald is thebest defensive mine on planet Earth right now.
Well, if that's the case, then at least somebody on the Seahawk
(12:07):
roster is going to be the mostlikely to benefit from that. Who's that
guy gonna be? We'll come backand discuss that with you. Chuck Powell
joins us at six from Cheney Stadiumat Tacoma. Right here on ninety three
to three kjrfmve from the R andR Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now back
to Softie and Dick on your Homefor the Huskies and the Kraken Sports Radio
(12:28):
ninety three point three kjr FM.All right, boys and girls, back
here at Cheney Stadium at Tacoma. If you're driving around tonight on nine point
fifty am, Chuck Powell back onthe Color Broadcast with Mike Kurle tonight.
That's a must listen for the Rainiers. Reno game. Reno's got a guy
named Rinaldo Hernandez. He was justsending Tate measure blasts. He's gotta here.
(12:54):
He's a catcher in DH and he'ssix foot two fifty. He was
just rock. I'm telling you theguy was hitting balls in the Puget sound
man at a chading stadium bring BP, so keep an eye on that name.
But Chuck's got the Callhill Jordan's Atsix pm here on the FM side,
Hugh Malan rejoined us here for alittle bonus time on the radio showing.
(13:16):
Hugh, first of all, kindof a two parter. You've mentioned
before that Mike McDonald is the bestdefensive mind of the planet. I wonder
number one, kind of remind peoplewhy you feel that way, and then
who's the most likely seahawk defender tokind of benefit from that? You think,
well, first of all, yeah, I it's a bold claim,
but I can defend it in thefollowing way. If you look at University
(13:39):
of Michigan before Mike McDonald was thedefensive coordinator in twenty twenty one. The
year before they were ninety third outof one hundred and thirty in the country
in points yielded. They were givingup thirty four and a half. In
just one season they cut in halfto seventeen point three. That was seventh
again, third to seventh in yards. They went from down to eighty seven
(14:07):
to fourteen. Okay, so nowyou have John Harbus says, I need
this cat back right, And whatdo they do at Baltimore? They go
from points per game they went twentytwenty one. Under Wink Martindale. The
Ravens had been eighteenth the first yearhe's there, McDonald they go to third,
(14:28):
and then last year they go tofirst in turnovers. The year before
McDonald got there, the Ravens weretwenty eighth. Then his first year they
were eighth. McDonald's second year theywere first. In sacks they got from
that I'm sorry, you're go ahead. Sorry, my fault ahead, my
(14:48):
fault. In sacks, they gofrom twenty third, then to sixth and
then to first. And by theway, I mentioned twenty twenty two in
the final ten games, and thisis something that's going to bear relevance as
we watch the first half of theSeahawks season. In the final ten games
I'd mentioned in points per game, the Ravens went to third, but in
the final ten games they were fifteenpoints six on points per game. That
(15:11):
was number one in the NFL forthe second half of the season. So
his first season as defensive coordinator, the second half led the league, and
then his second year, which waslast year he was first in the entire
league. So they hit the triplecrown. They hit points number one points,
number one in turnovers, and numberone in sacks. And that's what
Genevian Clowney and Kyle van Ney.Clowney was on his fifth team, he
(15:33):
had two sacks of the year beforeopposite Miles Garrett Cale van Noy was on
his sixth team thirty two years old. Like those were their defensive ends.
They just have a heavy pressure packageand a disguise package. Now there is
a gazoo on my shoulder every time, and it's in the name of Steve
Spagnola, and Spags of course whathe does in Super Bowls. Maybe I'm
(15:58):
wrong on that. Maybe I shouldsay that McDonald is number two, but
Spagnola. If you take those combinedUH stats, as the Ravens were number
one, you combine those, theChiefs were number six, darn good,
but but not at the level theRavens had been. And so I think
in the totality, when you considerall those factors, I'll hold with what
(16:21):
I said here. We were talkingabout the position that scares us the most
on the Seahawks team. Wait aminute, we didn't we didn't get the
one guy. Pause, Yeah, one guy. Who's the one guy that's
gonna benefit from all that? Yes? Sorry, well, I would say,
let's let's just looking at the Ravens. Kyle Hamilton was a first team
All NFL safety and when you watchhim, and I've studied a hell of
(16:44):
a lot of Ravens tape, veryvery very heady player. To me,
I think that a guy that canfill that role in some regard is Julian
Love because Julian Love is as extremelyhigh IQ and there's a lot of communication
that has to take place. Alot of the impact that Julian Love is
(17:07):
liable to bring to this team isnot going to necessarily be seen in stats.
I think he's gonna have a verygood year. Now. The one
distinction that has to be drawn isJulian Love is five ten and three quarters
one hundred and ninety five pounds. At the combine, you had Kyle Hamilton,
a first round draft pick. Hewas six four and an eighth and
two hundred and seventeen pounds. Thewingspan was over five inches more for Hamilton.
(17:33):
How's that play out? When Iwatch the Ravens, They'll put Hamilton
on the best tight end, andhe's got the size, he's got the
length to play what's called cover one, which is man to man on third
and medium downs. When it's moneytime, they could put Kyle Hamilton on.
Whether it's Gronkowski or it doesn't matterright, Travis Kelce whatever. So
I don't think Julian Love's brings youthat, but all the other facets about
(17:56):
the IQ and what have you.Julie and Love should have a really big
year with Mike McDonald good Hugh. The middle linebacker spot. Not only is
it unproven with with Baker and Dodson, all those guys are out too right
now. I mean we are onthe pop. We don't even know when
they're going to play at this point. We were talking earlier, we wanted
to ask you about how important obviouslyevery coaching staff places a different amount of
(18:19):
importance in their scheme to the middlelinebacker spot. How important is that spot
to Mike McDonald's defense. Well,I think when you look at you know,
their acquisition of Rokwan Smith, thatwas somebody Mike McDonald's just say hey,
let's go, let's go make abig trade acquisition. Uh, maybe
you have to look up what theygave up to acquire Rokuan Smith. But
(18:41):
you know they targeted him from theBears and uh, and then he came
in and he just he ran theirdefense. So there was some second and
a fifth. That's that's a lot, right, And and so I think
that I think the linebackers are arevery important. And if you want to
say the reason to be skeptical orcynical or what have you, I would
(19:03):
say the unproven nature of the Seahawkslinebackers for this year, that would be
a consideration because there's no doubt inmy mind that with Rocan Smith and Patrick
Queen. And then if you takethe NFC and you take Fred Warner with
the forty nine ers and and DreGreenlaw, because again it's a it's it's
(19:26):
a two linebacker league, right becauseeverybody's playing nickel. So the tandem that
the linebacker tandem for the Ravens wasby far the best in the FC.
The linebacker tandem for the forty nineErs is by far the best in the
NFC. And you know, thosedefenses are playing great ball, and I
think that the linebackers are essential toit. So that's a very valid question,
an important question to be answered.Yeah, I just think again,
(19:49):
you got two guys on one yeardeals. There's a reason why they're on
proven contracts. Right when it's allsaid and done. But Hu Milling again
with us on the radio show andHugh just to wrap it up with this.
With the Seahawk football team training campstarts on Wednesday, I don't want
to do the whole you know, give us the top five things you'll be
looking for from the Sea York footballteam. But what is your gut kind
of tell you how? Just thevibe in the atmosphere, besides the obvious
(20:11):
of a guy running around with gloveis on the music playing all that stuff.
What are you kind of expecting tosee and field differently on Wednesday without
Pete Carroll for the first time infifteen years. Well, I think there's
always some juice. Unfortunately, I'vebeen part of teams that they got coaches
fired. I played a part ingetting coaches fired. It's not fun,
right, But when you come inyou say okay, there's an extra sense
of urgency. I think McDonald hasa very likable style. I think that
(20:34):
he's impressed these guys with his brilliance. He is he really understands what we
didn't even get. I got allthese notes ready to talk about, you
know, the nature and the ex'esand o's and what have you. So
we'll do that next week. Yougot three hours, You're on Monday,
You're on Tuesday, you're on Wednesday. Well, I'm on every day next
(20:56):
week, so we'll really delve intothat. So so I think that he
is got the absolute captive audience ofthat football team. I think that they're
in a great place mentally, andI think they're about to be fed some
really high tech schematics defensively, andthere may be some rough edges. I
mentioned that first year in twenty twentytwo, it got decidedly better in the
(21:21):
second half, so that could happenthis year. But I think that I
think the juice is going to begreat. You got enough new blood everywhere.
I'll be shocked if it's not asense of a really good vibe with
the newness member. Now, itwasn't Pete Carroll stepping away. Pete Carroll
got fired, right, and thoseplayers know it. It's still weird hearing
that. It's still weird saying thatdidn't you think you that Pete Carroll was
(21:44):
going to get to call his shot. I did a surprised me, but
you know, there was enough thingsunraveling at the end. And look,
I commend the organization, and itdoesn't mean I think there can be room
for two truths. Pete Carroll wasa phenomenal, phenomenal coach for the Seahawks.
But the reality is that he wasthere fourteen years. He won nine
playoff games and in his first sevenand then he won one in his second
(22:10):
seven, and so it was avery front road, front loaded, excuse
me, a success pattern for him, and in a lot of ways,
it was time for something new.And McDonald, you get a guy again.
I'll just say it. I thinkhe's the best defensive mind for now.
All schemes get replaced, but fornow, I think he's the best.
And it'll be fun to see whathe does with those parts with the
Seahawks. All right, good stuffhere, well here at three o'clock,
(22:33):
pop, appreciate it. Here aboutwith I'm all right, well we come
back. We're gonna hear a littlebit from I think Scott's service and Logan
Gilbert as well, if we canfit those in next On ninety three three
kJ RFM live from the R andR Foundation Specialist Broadcast Studio. Now back
to Softie and Dick Gone your Homefor the Huskies and the Kraken Sports Radio
(22:55):
ninety three point three kJ r FM. Alright, boys, he goes back
here at Cheney Stadium. Big thanksto Hugh Millen for joining us on the
radio show. If you missed it, our baby come Back Bracket Winter,
it was Ken Griffy Junior. KenGriffy Junior was the one guy that we
all agreed we wish never ever everleft Seattle. He came back, but
(23:19):
he was not the same guy we'retalking about the two thousand and one,
two thousand version of Ken Griffy Junior. Scot Service Today speaking at te Mobile
Park, Chance Chance, and hewas asked about Logan Gilbert not pitching this
weekend against Houston. Some opening commentsfrom the skipper, excited to get back.
(23:40):
I think everybody appreciates the break andthen players good chance spend some time
with family and some of them aremoving around the country. Someone stay local,
but really good break. I hopeeverybody enjoyed it. It's time to
get back to work, so obviouslyastros in town just as we expected.
These series are always fun and asthe season goes on it'll get even funner.
But looking forward to it, Iknow we have a good crowd tonight
(24:03):
or be fired up and ready togo. So I'll take any questions.
How did you Why did you slotthe rotation the way you did coming out
of the break? You know therewas some you know, a couple of
different things to look at. Obviously, is this the biggest series of the
year. No, because we're gonnaplay Houston again. There's other things that
are gonna go on here over thelast two plus months of the season.
I think just trying to you know, you want to keep guys in some
(24:25):
rhythm. I think putting Brian Wuinto this series something we talked a lot
about. We want to get himpitching again and didn't want to have the
layoff to be too long. Onthe flip side of that, you know,
Logan has probably carried as many inningsas anybody in the American League.
He's been awesome and he's gonna haveplenty of time to impact you know what
we're doing here, So again, you know, wind it up the way
we did. All these guys aregonna pitch a lot they're all gonna pitch
(24:47):
in big games, you know whatnot, but we did what we did.
We're gonna line it up that wayand go with it. The Rock tonight,
George Kirby tomorrow, and Brian wuwill pitch on Sunday. The swing
of this game, I mean, you could go from being the only to
out of a playoff spot or increaseyour we play a game a game the
night that we're looking forward to.The Astros are playing really good baseball,
as we suspected they would. Theyhave a good team and they've been in
(25:10):
the playoffs. And I've said allalong, if you want to win the
Western Division in the American League,it's gonna have to go through either Arlington
or Houston. And that's where we'reat. So we're in a good spot.
Obviously, we need to be moreconsistent offensively. That's something they're having
a lot of talk about. We'reaware of that, but you need to
go out and do it. AndI think, you know what, for
me, it's it's to be thefun time of the year. Now once
(25:30):
you get past the All Star break, fans are into it. Everybody kind
of sees where their team is.You see the strengths, you see the
deficiencies. Okay, now who canturn it on and it really becomes you
know, it's it's a marathon,but we're getting closer to the end,
so it becomes pick up the pacea little bit on the race. And
that's just where we're at over thepast three seasons. You've also have a
six best record in the major leaguesin that second half. Do you attribute
(25:51):
to that to anything you get yourguys more juiced or is it just that
that rest really fruit need to beYeah, I think guys start to you
know, our teams have had thatability to come together. They do really
pulled together. We have a knackfor playing a lot of close games.
Unfortunately, left a couple of thoseclose games we didn't win them right before
the break, which is disappointing. But I suspect these games will be close
as well, and that's what ittakes. You got to really execute.
(26:11):
And I think when we will continueto execute on the mount, we need
to do better at in the batter'sbox, we do that will be in
good shape. Speaking of injuries, how's a don doing? Dom is here,
Doms is recovering. He's still probablya couple of weeks no timeline,
yep, A couple of weeks awayfrom you know, being ready to go
out on a rehab assignment or anythinglike that. So he's gonna be a
(26:32):
little while for him. Any limitationswith Stanek right now? Or did that
four days clear? What needed?Yeah? When I've heard he's gonna come
out here and throw it was outhere yesterday. Felt fine. He'll throw
a pre game again today, butI think he'll be fine. By the
way, Mariners did make a move. Mike Bauman has been DFAD and Gabe
Spier is back off the fifteen dayI off first tonight's game. It is
interesting to me that he talks aboutputting guys in rhythm, but he's now
(26:53):
giving Logan Gubert eight days off betweenstarts, so I'm just curious to see
what he looks like when he comesback starting Monday. He also say he
wants to get Wu pitching. Imean he could have pitched him Monday instead
of Son. He could have totallywe're talking about, yes, twenty four
more hours, I mean twenty fourI'll play Scott's side of this for a
(27:14):
second. Who's the last team BrianWu pitched against the LA Angels and he
didn't pitch well, and Monday he'dbe pitching against the La Angels again after
not pitching well against the Angels lastweek. So I don't know if that
had got the decision. Yeah, maybe, but far from me to make
an excuse for Scott Servis well,I look like, yeah, I mean,
I just think this. I thinkthe decision to skip Logan Gilbert for
(27:36):
me is just I don't agree withit. I think he's your horse,
I think he's your all star.I think he should be out there against
the best team in the division that'schasing you. You just admitted you got
to go through Houston. I thinkthis is a big series, and I
think keeping that guy in rhythm asmuch as possible is very important. Now,
if he comes back on Monday aftereight days off and gets spanked,
we're gonna wonder what the hell's goingon. So I think how he comes
(27:59):
out of this is going to beimportant now. Logan Gilbert did talk today
at T Mobile Park and he wasasked about skipping the start this weekend and
having to wait until Monday. Yeah, I feel really good. This is
probably the highest innings I've been atat this point. But fortunately I've been
really good. We have one ofthe best training staffs probably in the whole
league, so they've helped me stayon the field, stay healthy. A
(28:19):
series like this, I always wishI could be out there. It would
be really fun, But I alsounderstand and I love having a little bit
of rest. It's very much appreciatedat this point in the season, and
you know, hopefully I blow pasthowever many innings I through last year.
That's the goal. So I wouldlove to be out there, but understand
why how much just time off fromthis last week given for this series kind
(28:42):
of help works in your things forthe long run. Yeah, I think
it's great in years past two havinga break at this point in the season,
like you'd give anything for a fewextra days and hopefully be able to
hit the groundrunning, because what itdoes, like at the end of the
year, we're not just playing forAugust and September. Hopefully we want to
make a run as deep as wecan, and having a few days right
(29:04):
now can really help kind of setyou up in the right direction later on.
So one hundred and ninety innings Ithink was his career high. He's
on pace for two eighteen whatever itis this year. But he's also he's
number one in baseball and innings pitch, but he's also number thirteen in total
pitches overall. Right, so Ithink he's a young guy. I think
he can handle it. I don'tthink it's that big of a deal.
(29:26):
But in the end, I getthe logic. You want to make sure
these guys are healthy for the stretchrun in September, but I'd like to
get to the stretch run in Septembertwo. Are there actual statistics that back
up the fact that if you restthese pitchers they actually have less of a
chance to get injured. I haven'tseen those I have not seen those documents
that say, if you get theseguys rolls exactly, where's the screen God,
(29:52):
where's the tablet the stone tablets thatsay you know what it is?
It's the poto coming down from thetop of the mountains. This just says,
right here, God has commanded meto not pitch Logan Gilbert again this
year. It's frustrating. It's fair. Was for this there was truth that
that was the right way to doit, instead of speculation that that was
(30:12):
the right way to do it.Then I'd be more for it, but
I haven't seen the proof. Andlet's face it, like you're talking about
the other day, the part ofit is, hey, if these guys
had this unbelievable track record of makingthe playoffs every year because their rotation was
healthy, Okay, fine, Imean you've got the bit they've haven't done
anything on one playoff appearance in nineyears, So we'll see
