of stuff. We're giving away stuff, tickets right now for tonight, tickets
later in the show for Sunday totake mom. But in the meantime,
I want to get some voice tailedlast year. I just I feel like
we just killed it. I thinkthere's a ton of people who sent him
in. It was really good.I compiled them all together thirty seconds or
less, and it was over fourand a half minutes. So that's a

(09:05):
lot. Yeah, so let's getas many and we'll get and Jess is
really good with this stuff, soI'm pretty good chance if you do do
it today, it's gonna get onthe air and you'll you'll hear it.
And if not, we'll be putit on that little uh the piece she

early and off it. Let's go, let's go, let's fired away,
all right. Marinor's back home today, little homestand Oakland, Kansas City.

(09:30):
About a month and a half ago, he said, well, that's probably
I mean, at worst, that'sa five and one home stand, right,
that's like, at worst you're gonnawin five or six. Oakland way
better than we thought, at leastin terms of the record, Kansas City
better than we thought. Brian Woogets to start tonight. We'll tell you
about that game. And also JimBowden was on with Greg and Chris about

(09:50):
an hour plus ago. Talked abouta number of different things, and as
a former GM in Major League Baseball, he was a little bit critical what's
going on with the Mariner's front officeand they don't waste this great pitching staff
yesterday notwithstanding, we'll talk about thatnext and hear a couple of his highlights
from that interview on ninety three pointthree kJ FM Live from the R and

(10:11):
R Foundation Specialists Broadcast studio. Backto Ian Fernez Power Advice, Seattle's Closest
sports Book, Snow Call Me Casinoon Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
r FM, and again we're excitedto have R and R Foundation Specialist is
our new Sports Radio ninety three pointthree KJR FM studio sponsor. Of course,

(10:33):
this show brought to you by SnowCall Me Casino Sales Closest Casino SnO
Casino dot Com. I feel likewe're already just well well way ahead of
the game today, like really aheadof the game. We are and I'm
really excited. Yeah, so wegave away a pair of tickets for the
night's game. Go see Brian whowas first start against Oakland. And the
guy the winner's name is Jose andI met him, yes, down he

(10:58):
works at the Cannery in Sumner, which is down at the Canny and Sumner
is down obviously Sumner, but it'sit's kind of a furniture store kind of
do it. It's really cool placedown there, and I met I met
him. I want to say itwas last fall. We were doing something
down there. I think I agreedto go with my wife, maybe the

(11:18):
last winter. I don't know.Anyway, we went down there, ran
into Jose. He's a big listenerto the show. And men, I'm
happy. That's awesome, actually cool, pretty pumps. I am too.
I'm very pumped. All right, great, big thanks Jose, Thanks buddy,
listen. See it pays to winto the show. You never know
what you're gonna get. Yep.And just we had a ton of entrance.
I used a number random randomizer andcounted them out. I went to

(11:39):
all the eight's earlies. Just soyou guys know this, we didn't pick
someone because they're a friend of theyou know that he's met Ian before.
I literally had to count the it'searlies. Do you want to tell him
what number you came up with?I would draw me too. Then I'll
say it, you've done enough softeating this week. Okay. So I
did a number between one and twohundred because that's the amount of texts I

(12:00):
could see, and I went andcounted them. It was sixty nine.
Okay, there I said it.It was and it was a complete Google
number randomizer. Oh we're just abunch of dummies here at this station and
you're just getting sucked right into it, Jessam what. I kind of enjoy
it. I should be a littledumber sometimes, I know. I just
the best thing was is we're inthe break and Jessaman says, oh my

(12:22):
gosh, so I did the randomizerand I'm like okay, and then I'm
taking like something's wrong. Like she'slike, oh, I had this look
on her face, like you know, she just sucked a lemon. And
I'm like, what what's wrong?I knew and she's and she's like,
you didn't have to tell me,I know, which it kind of felt
like you should and so she tellsshe goes the random randomizer and it was
not sixty nine. I'm like, what, I should have taken a picture

(12:46):
of it. Uh. You knowwhat, Jose, those tickets are gonna
be more fun now because you canget a chuckle out of this along the
way. Okay, before I getto some sound, I want to we're
gonna again it's Mother's Anne Sunday. We're asking for your talkbacks, voice text,
whatever you want to call them.We want to hear from you.
You're well, wishes to your mom, maybe it's your wife, daughter who's

(13:09):
a mom, doesn't matter Mother's Daywishes, and we're gonna compile those and
what we're gonna do we're making ona mail and in Friday for Ian.
Jessmin having work a lot harder thanI ever do, and she's I know,
but she likes putting that stuff together, and so she's gonna go and
keep checking and do we have anyyet? Do we have any Mom's things
yet? We have two that Ineed a refreshation. Okay, Okay,

(13:33):
So I want you to go tothat talk back and we're gonna bounce back
with those, and then again Jessis gonna put it all together in case
Mom doesn't hear it, very easyfor you to play back to her on
Sunday, on Sunday or even today, it doesn't even matter. But we're
going to have that there not oftenthat you know, and we want to
hear from you. Guys. It'sa special weekend and Mom's Day is big,
So get them in early too sothat I'll and I'll do my own

(13:56):
one live for my mom at twelveforty five and and uh and away we
go. So there you go,four nine four to five one. Also,
it's a Telemary to text line.Now here's what we're gonna do on
the text line. Okay, nowwe got the first set of tickets given
a winning this one, Jess,I think we're gonna have to be a
little bit more subjective with because we'regonna get a lot, and so we're

(14:16):
gonna have We're gonna kind of andand I'm gonna ask you guys be honest
here with us, like don't don'tbe that guy or that woman whatever we
tell us who you want to bringto the game on Sunday, Mom or
otherwise, and why on a textline four nine four five one, we're
gonna try to and there's gonna beno way to pick. You know,
We're just gonna find somebody that wefeel is is being authentic and send you

(14:39):
and mom, or you and amom to be whatever it is to the
game on Sunday from Mother's Day tothe Mariners game with my tickets. Uh
so four nine, four or fiveone, send those in gorgeous day coming
up on Sunday as well. Wewant you and a mom. We'll just
say that you and a mom.You tell us who that mom is and
why you got I want to goand why you want to take her to

(15:01):
the games? Simple as that, right, four nine, four or five
one. Okay, So the A'sare in town before we get to Jim
Boden. It's an interesting thing becauseGreg and I talked about this in Crosstock
all the time. You know, old You look at Oakland, it's like,
God, they're eighteen and twenty one, but look at their run differential.
They're minus twenty eight, like theyshould be way worse. Right,
they started the season one and seven. Did the A's their run differential in

(15:24):
their first eight games? This isinsane. They got outscored forty nine to
nineteen in their first eight games ofthe year, they're run differential. Well,
that's why we were also sour, right, they're run differential. My
math is correct here minus thirty inthe first eight games of the season,
minus thirty. Since that time, they've gone seventeen and fourteen. As a

(15:46):
team, their run differential is plustwo. Not great, but like they're
hanging around and it's now minus twentyeight. So part of that goofy crazy
run differential number. Then we lookat Oakland say they're probably not that great,
they're eighteen and twenty one, Butwe look at the run differential minus
twenty because we've done that. Wedid that so much a few years ago

(16:08):
with the Mariners, so I kindof liked the number just because it's a
good barometer in a sense, Wow, like that team is not as good
as the record says, or they'rebetter than the record shows. We've kind
of done that a little bit withHouston along the way. I though they're
now minus thirty one. They kindof dropped off a little bit. Joe
kind of used that a couple ofweeks ago and he said, hey,
there's some things showing that Houston's trendingup. Oakland is definitely trending up over

(16:30):
the since that sevence that one andseven start. In the the last thirty
one games they've been they've been reallygood. So throwing that out there as
they come to town with Brian Wuyesterday was a flesh at game. It
just happens. Those games take place, you deal with them. Runs they
went up that much, exactly.Jim Bonenes a former baseball executive. He's

(16:51):
on with Chris and Greg earlier today, and there's a boy, there's so
much juicy stuff in here, andI think I want to start Jess with
the second SoundBite you have listed hereif I can, because I think this
is a really good place to starta discussion. And we'll have a couple
more from from Gym. But Ithink it's a really good place to start

(17:15):
because in our city, in ourmarket, and you know our guy Jose,
who's going to the game. Iran on Jose. I know we
were probably talking Seahawks that day becauseit was that time of the year.
I was out last night at acool little brewery thing going on and ran
into a bunch of dudes that listenedto the radio show and uh and watch

(17:37):
our Seahawks coverage on Fox and Iwas talking to them, and every time
I do stuff like that, yourun into people it's always, you know,
like with this baseball team, it'salways, Oh, I a think
we're gonna do anything this year tomake this team better. Like this is
kind of the general thing are thinking, do you think to make this team
better this year? Are they goingto waste this pitching staff? The perception
we have in this market is it'sa I hate this word, but I

(18:02):
think it's true. This is aperception. Is it reality? Well here
in a second, but they're acheap ownership group that doesn't want to invest
in a product to make it better. And I bring that up for this
reason. We all understand how goodone through three, and I think we
put Miller in they're one through four. Let's say one through four. That
rotation is and Hancock gave you somemoments. I think we will give you

(18:25):
some moments your number five starters ofhe's probably a two or three starter for
any other team right now or mostteams. But the perception is like in
our market is doesn't matter how goodthat pitching staff is, They're not going
to do what they need to doto make the offense better, and that's
frustrating for fans. Well, whatis the true reality of the perception around
baseball? Jim Bowden, serious XMformer baseball executive, answers the question from

(18:51):
Greg what is that perception around baseball? What the manners have and have it
done well? I can tell youthat perception of baseball is different than the
way the Mariners respond to it.You know, the perspective of baseball at
the Winter meetings. And I wasat the Winter meetings talking to all of
the gms and executives in the game, and everybody felt the same way that
Seattle had the pitching and if theycould get aggressive, go out and sign

(19:11):
a Cody Bellinger, be aggressive, try to bring in the show eotony,
which they didn't even play on,that if they were able to add offense
to this team, they could wina World Series. And I think there
was a lot of disappointment in theindustry that the Mariners now Jerry Depoto in
the front office certainly took the hitthat they defended and didn't say it was

(19:33):
ownership, but it's very very clearthat ownership was worried about the revenue stream.
They're worried about the television deal andstreaming rights and all those kind of
things, and they felt, youknow, financially tight. But the problem
in baseball is you only get awindow to win. That's usually three to
four years, and it's a smallwindow and you have to take advantage of
the window and make the moves. Then, just like the Baltimore Oriials did

(19:55):
trading for Corbyn Burns, right, they had the lineup, they're ready to
win, but they needed another startingpitcher if they wanted to sit there and
have a legitimate shot out of theWorld Championship. So when they traded for
Burns, then all of a sudden, that completely changed where Baltimore can go.
And you look at Seattle and itwas just a perplexing It was a
perplexing offseason because they traded the powerof Taoscar Hernandez and u Hango Suarez,

(20:19):
but they didn't replace them with guysthat put the ball in play more or
would move to change or create traffic. They brought in more guys that just,
you know, that strike out toomuch. So you have a lineup
that has struck out more times thanall other twenty nine teams in baseball.
That's just a fact. And everybody, and everybody should have seen this coming.

(20:42):
And your best player, Julio Rodriguez, has one homeer and eleven RBI's,
And part of the reason for thatisn't just because he's off to a
slow start like last year, butpart of it because why would I pitch
to him. I mean, Idon't want to pitch to him, like
I'm not going to get anything tohit, and he's not getting hit,
so he'll start swinging the bad pitchesright, and so I could take him

(21:03):
out because no one else scares me. Sure, you're gonna get some power
from Hanneger, You're gonna get somepower from cal Radley Garver against left handed
pitching. But for the most part, you've got outs up and down the
lineup. And as much as wesaw some hitters in the lineup we like,
like ty Franz, he's never doneit. Sure the approach looks like
he should hit and for power, but he hasn't. And at some point

(21:26):
potential has to turn into production orit's just potential. And so you look
up and down the lineup, itdoesn't scare you. And so I think
that there's plenty of time to makeeither a big trade to get a guy
to hit forty home runs like PeterLonzo could do and just score more runs
that way, or you know, just try to upgrade the lineup in two

(21:49):
or three different spots with guys thatyou know can help create more runs,
create more traffic, create more speed. Like I thought Lewis Rise would be
a perfect pickup for Seattle. Diegoended up trading for him, but that
would have been a perfect guy atthe top of the lineup ahead of Rodriguez,
who's going to be on base allthe time. And then when Rodriguez
gets going and starts hitting his thirtyhome runs, instead of solo shots,

(22:11):
there'll be two run shots, rightright. So it's that kind of thing
that they have to do. They'vegot time, They've got eighty days between
now and the deadline. They've gottime. But this is showtime. This
is when you got to step up. But by the way, it's not
just the front offics of that hasto step up. It's ownership. Ownership
has to step up and say it'sokay to spend money, it's okay to
trade our top prospects, because youhave to recognize the window to win in

(22:34):
Seattle is right here. Right nowtoday. All right, let me a
couple of things before we get in. There's another he mentioned Pete a Lonzo.
We'll hear in a second about howlikely that Pete a Lonzo trade is.
I heard the guys talking about inthe morning the other day as well
with Chuck and Buck. I letme defend the baseball team for a second,
because he brought up show Hey OTonian kind of in the past and
kind of like a comment they won'teven in on that. I don't really

(22:56):
blame him on that, to behonest with you that I think it's really
an unfair criticism to say, well, they weren't even in on show.
Heyo Tani Shoeyotani went from the AnaheimAngels Los Angeles Angels in Orange County to
the Los Angeles Dodgers. He stayedin southern California. He stayed in that
market. They can outbid anybody. And yes, there is fair criticism for

(23:21):
the Marrier's ownership group at times forbeing too frugal and do cheap and not
spending enough money. And I meanwhat they did to sell guys off is
I mean he's selling off Jared Kelnickbecause he was a piece to sell off
a contract of Marco like stuff likethat. Yeah, man, that's that's
just that. That doesn't sit wellwith a lot of people, nor should
it. But I wouldn't criticize himfor Otani. He wasn't coming here,

(23:42):
he wasn't going anywhere. It wasit feels like all along financially and overall
it was la or bust. Itjust was. So I'm not going to
criticize him for that. But andI won't criticize the Poto is is due
criticism for when he says things thatare just like just you shake your head

(24:03):
at. But with Hollander and Depoto, you kind of do feel as if
their hands are tied. So it'sagain the criticism I think has to if
we're going to criticize this baseball teamever for not putting together a better roster
offensively, I believe it has tostill start with the guys that write the

(24:25):
checks, that sign the checks thatthe payroll comes from the ownership. He
brought up Pee Alonzo, I'm curiousabout I think we all are. And
he hasn't had a great year.He just got benched a couple of days
ago, things like that. ButPete Alonso is just an aircraft carrier of
a bat. Perhaps would he beavailable? How likely Jim Bowden is a

(24:47):
Pee Alonzo trade? Yeah, Ithink it really depends on how the Mets
play between now and the end ofJuly, and it depends on the appetite
of Mariners ownership that they're willing totake on salary, and it's they're willing
to trade some top prospects to makeit work. But I think the message
is that's clear is that the Marinershave the best starting pitching one to five

(25:08):
or one to six in baseball. They have a strong bullpen, and so
they have a pitching staff that ifthey can win the division or getting as
a wild card berth, they'll haveas good a chance of any team of
running the table and maybe bringing aWorld championship there. But they're not going
to be able to do it withthis lineup. And so either they need
to trade for a big bat starlike Pete A Lonzo the Mets or Vladimir

(25:32):
Guerrero Junior of the Blue Jays,or they're going to apt to add two
or three more hitters that put theball in play, that can hit good
pitching. And so there's work tobe done by the front office between now
and the July thirtieth trade deadline.Yeah, there's no doubt there's work to
get done. There's names out there, and I know, like on both

(25:59):
the Mariners, the podcasts guys DoAndrews and Chuck and just on the morning
show, you'll hear a lot ofdifferent names being brought up. I've never
it doesn't matter what sport for me, I can never. I'm not a
good guy about bringing up names fortrades because ninety nine point nine percent of
the time they never come to fruitionand there is a trade and it's like,
well I never saw that one coming. But but there are names out
there. Alonzo does make sense. But you know what Boden said, there

(26:21):
is interesting like yet you're gonna haveto give something up, like you will
have to give something up to getsomething back to make your team hopefully better.
You pretty much feel like one throughthree Gilbert Kirby, Gastio, certainly
Castia with the contract, but onethrough three probably untouchable. You would hope,

(26:41):
you would think Miller probably close behindHandcocker, whoop have to be on
the table. Harry Ford with calRawl in your system, assuming you believe
that you can re sign him.Scott Boris, I'm talking to you.
Probably not a guy you want togive up, but you might have to.
And Ford class A is a guythat it probably could fetch you something,

(27:02):
but does it fetch you what youreally need? The problem was roster
construction in the offseason. That wasthe problem. This great pitching staff that's
getting hamstrung by and not so goodand not so very good offense. Jess,

(27:22):
we'll play one more here and that'sthe third one down there. And
Boden asked, answers the question, how do the Mariners not see the offensive
woes coming down the track? Idon't know. I mean, if I
had to guess, I'd say it'sprobably the analytic department, right that probably
took up looked at all the numbersand said, well, look, rarely,
we'll do this, and Garver willdo this, and if we take

(27:45):
out the strikeouts of ti Oscar andSuarez, then this one. Don't know.
You know, a lot of thepickups that they had were players that
were in specific roles, right LikeMitch Garver with Texas was platoony with Robbie
Grossman and was put in a lineuparound Seeger Simeon and o'doles Garcia. So

(28:06):
Garb was put in a position wherehe's only facing pitchers he can hit,
and he was put between hitters thatthey're going to give Garb pitches to hit,
not the people around them. Sothat's not going to translate when you
go to Seattle. Luke Raley, same thing. Look I like Luke Reley.
I like his power, but itwas the way Kevin Cash was using

(28:29):
him and matching him up that madeLuke Raley effective. Now Jorge Polanco little
different story. I don't think anyof us expected you have fifty strikeouts in
one hundred and thirty seven at bats, and I don't know what that's all
about. But that's not Hoy Polonko. He's a better player than that,
and I would think that he willturn it around if you show a little
patience. But Mitch Hanneger agent declineand injuries got to him, Like I

(28:51):
didn't understand why we thought he wasgoing to rebound, right, I mean,
what's he hitting two thirteen, twoten something like that? Like you
know so, and really, whenyou look at this lineup, how many
guys right now in that lineup haveit on base percentage of thirty two percent
or better. I think you onlyhave one guy last time I checked,
and that was Joshua Ross in theentire lineup like that, Just that formula

(29:15):
doesn't work, and instead of cryingabout it, let's go fix it,
right it's time to fix it.And you got to call all the teams
right now, like the Rockies, like the Marlins, like the Nationals,
like the White Sox, like theAthletics, like the angel You got you
gotta pound the phones on those teamsthat we already know will trade with you.

(29:36):
And then you got to hope thatyou know, hey, look,
if Houston doesn't turn around, whichI think they will, you know,
maybe Alex Pregnant becomes available. IfToronto doesn't turn around, maybe Vladimir Guro
Junior Bobachev become available. If theMets don't get into it, Pete A.
Lonzo could come available. And it'sgoing to be painful, but you're
gonna have to trade Hancock er Woo, one of them are going to have
to go. Just I know youwant to keep them all, but you

(29:57):
can't keep your best, all right, keep your four best, don't touch
the four. But you could touchHandcock and you could touch Wu if it
means improving the offense, no matterhow painful it's gonna be, and the
top prospects in the farm system,it's okay to trade them because this is
your window to win when you haveall this pitching. I'm glad I heard

(30:18):
that. I didn't hear that earlier. So yeah, he was like what
I mentioned. Yeah, you're notgonna what does the Storm called their their
top four point of the core four, that's what the Mariners have. That
the four guys that's the core four. You don't trade those. I'm good
on Alex Bregman. We just sawthat thing. I don't need to see
that. That's bass feeds slowing down. She ain't talked about it the other
day. I'm good with that. But a lot of other names out there,

(30:40):
Like you said, you look throughthe baseball Charal's only three games below
five hundred, but they're playing thatdivision. It's so hard. Chicago's ten
and twenty eight, see what theywant to do, Miami's ten and twenty
nine. The Nationals are five hundred, so I'm not sure if they're quite
that point yet. But I thinkwhoever you listen to don't wait for the
next seventy nine days until the tradedeadline gets you. Do it now,

(31:03):
help this pitching staff out. Ithink what we saw, I wonder if
this is what we saw. Idon't know if I think. I wonder
if what we saw with Kirby andGilbert the last two outings, two guys
that just have in Castillogo Sunday theweight of the world on their shoulders,
right, Like you have to begreat, you have to be sensational,
like you have to carry this team. That's what you've got to do because

(31:29):
offensively, it's going to be achallenge every night, and that's all hard
thing for it. I mean,it's hard enough to pitch in the Major
League Baseball I'm assuming as it is, but with that kind of pressure on,
it's even harder. Okay, Gussoever the ms that whole interviews up

It does not get what. Listenyou're born in the Prairies. It is
as Canada as it gets Toronto, you might as well be in New York,
right or more basically, if you'rein if in Ontario, you might
as well be in Detroit. Nope, moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is Canada through

Gorgeous place up there. But momwas a huge, huge influence on my

crazy. We have two and thatseems overwhelming. She had five. She
had a perfect boy and four justnightmarish girls. We can see you've grown

(35:37):
up in a certain environment. Indeed, so despite the fact that she had
those four daughters, has come outgreat but happy Mother's date to my mother,
who is just a terrific human beingand a great mom. And it
meant so much to me growing up, especially through high school and college and
everything else. And you know, with her dad, her dad kind of

(35:58):
was the reason I kind of fellin love with sports as much as anything.
With my grandfather, her father, who's a semi pro hockey player and
just an incredible person too. Iused to love it because my mom was
as tough as nails. She wasa figure skater growing up, had to
fight a hockey player once for icetime. And I kid you, not
like fistfight hockey player for for icetime. I really need to meet missus.
Yeah, she is as armery asthey come, but it's still kicking

This has been a I'm going tohope that I get the big fellow's name
right. But you correct me ifI'm in fact you know what big number
sixty four to six round pick forthe Seahawks. You tell us your name,
Oh, my name is stap TawaMan, Tawa South. Say it

(40:06):
again, it's sab Tawa Man.I got it all right. So Tawa
he's been really, really concerned aboutit. Ben, I'm sorry, big
fella. I'm sorry. I don'tknow why. I worked in Utah and
covered the utes for many years.I thought I had the names down.
Then I came up to Seattle andI can't get I'm struggling, but I'm

(40:27):
gonna get this one because I'm expectingto see you in a Seahawk uniform this
fall. How are you today,Sue, I'm good, just got a
little workout in, but just chillingright now. You have what was it
like last weekend with with that firstNFL rookie mini camp, really your first

(40:49):
NFL practices? What was that experiencelike? Oh, it was good.
A lot of great competition. Everybody'sgood, so it was fun to compete.
Yeah, there's a lot of guyson both sides of the ball,
both sides of the ball, andit was just fun to be out there
again and play football because you knowall this combine and stuff like, Yeah,
football is the main thing. Soit's it's been fun to be out

(41:12):
there and do that. What letme let me take a step back a
little bit, because you played forone of the just I worked I mentioned
I worked in Salt Lake. Guysin Salt Lake for about almost six years.
I guess I knew Kyle winning himwell. He actually did a weekly
radio show with me when he wasa defensive coordinator. I mean, I
think the world of the man.I loved seeing the success he's having as
a head coach. I also knowhow and what he does with that program.

(41:36):
How prepared are you and other guyscoming out of that Utah program to
play in the National Football League, maybe compared to guys that you saw at
the combines or workouts and other places. Because I kind of feel like,
if you can get through four orfive years at Utah under Kyle, you're
about ready to go. That's aboutas good as preparation as you can have.
Yeah. I think, well,he did a great job over there
at Utah was establishing that culture thatwe had. It was like a lot

(42:00):
of little things like no walking onthe field at all, being five minutes
early to meetings, and then reallypushing toughness and physicality every day. I
practice attitude and effort and my silly, that helps a lot of the youths
in the NFL make that transition.Oh yeah, I am thankful for what

(42:22):
coach what has done for the programand myself. You bounced around forty five
games, forty five starts consecutively, nineteen at right guard, twenty four at
right tackle, all eleven starts lastyear, in eleven games at right tackle
in twenty twenty three, for allPAC twelve selections along the way first team

(42:43):
honors in twenty twenty two. You'vegot a heck of a resume. But
what jumps out I think at alot of people right guard, right tackle
playing on that right side. Youtalked about this with us on the speakerphone
on draft day. Right tackle wasout of necessity. Right walk us through
why from right now guard to righttackle at Utah? How that went or

(43:04):
how was it? Yeah, howit how it went down? And then
how it was for you? Okay, So it was off fall camp twenty
twenty two. I was playing.I was just starting right guard. They
threw me in one on one atright side, like a couple of snaps
during one on one period. ThenI didn't think anything of it. I

(43:27):
just thought coaching kind of test meto see like if I was like on
my stuff that day or I don'tknow, but then what is it?
Yeah? The week at the firstgame of Florida. He moved me back.
So was it our flight to Floridabecause we went like three days before
the humidity out there. He toldme that I'm starting at right tackle and
they're moving this freshman into the rightguard, and shoot, I was.

(43:52):
I was nervous like all the wayup until the game. But then until
like the first snap, all thejitters went out and I just tried to
a lot of my instincts because Ireally didn't practice tackle until like those one
on one reps during fall camp. But like my first run blocks were in
the game. Yeah, it wascrazy. It was crazy. It was

(44:15):
crazy, like dang actually, opponent. Yeah, I just I just knew
just to put my best foot forwardbecause at that point I trusted them more
than me, the coaching staff, more than myself, so I know that
they did it was best for theteam, and honestly, I wanted to
win, so I didn't really care. And for the rest of the season,
I continued to got to get betterplaying tackle, just getting more comfortable

(44:39):
with the the forwards and muscle memoryand you know, just seeing everything on
the football field from the lens ofthe tackle instead of a guard. So
it was smooth overall six round pickfor the So that wasn't Weaver state you
were playing, you were playing inthe swamp at Florida. That's a whole
different. That's a that's a hellof a And then the indoctrination to playing

(45:00):
right tackle, my friend, Ithink for a lot of you know,
they talk about versatility with this teamand on offensive line especially, but maybe
you can explain to our listeners, those are two entirely different positions, right,
I mean right tackle. It doesn'tmatter if it's tackle or guard.
On the right side, you're onthe only thing similar is you're on the
right side, but you're pulling moreas a guard. You're going to There's

(45:22):
just such a different, different positiongroup. How different are they in which
one do you feel more comfortable at? Oh? Yeah, just like you
said, it's it's way different, two different positions. There's the reason why
tackles get paid more in the league. They deal with like these mutant of
a d N, Like these dnsin the league different. Yeah, Like

(45:44):
I know Aaron Donald would be someinside, but if you look on the
outside that you've got these Miles,Miles Gary, all these dt watt Like
it's just different, Like you're dealingwith different bodies, and yeah, it's
the forwards different, like all theangles are different. But I sent to
your last question, I feel comfortablemore on the inside. Yeah, I
always felt more comfortable inside the movieoutside for the help was best for the

(46:07):
team. But yeah, guard iswhere it's at for me. Like I
just I just I just have morefun with it. Is it more?
It's more physical inside too, isn'tit. I mean like it's more like
you can get after guys. Likeon the outside, you got it's that
first step and you got to justkind of funnel guys out and all that.
On the inside you can get afterdudes a little bit more. It

(46:29):
sounds like you kind of enjoy thatpart of it a little bit more.
Yeah, definitely, uh yeah, yeah. So like trying to get off
the ball, just get my handson them right away instead of taking like
two three steps to do that attackle. So yeah, it's it.
And most teams play even front,so usually the guard is the first man
to make contact on combination talk,So it's more fun. I enjoyed it

(46:52):
a lot more. Put your handson a guy like that. Fans are
smiling right now listening to say that, buddy, I'm telling you right now,
they're like, that's what we liketo the little physical play. Guy
from Utah knows how to do that. Because the guys you saw day to
day on that Utah defensive line withKyle and Morgan Scalley coaching him, I'm
assuming that there were no days offin those practices against that d line.

(47:13):
Oh yeah, you know Utah defensetraditionally, like they're always good. Yeah,
our offense where Yeah, our oldline was we're gonna work in progress
since I've been there, but we'vebeen We've been persistently good these past few
years. But yeah, that defensehas been Yeah, that's what you talk
known for. Yeah, it's beengreat. The Uh let's let's get to

(47:36):
know you a little bit more.Uh. We found this out when we
heard from you on the on draftday on that Saturday. You are one
of ten kids, six sisters andthree brothers. I believe are you number
eight overall? What? So it'sit's how does it go with with ten
in the family? Where do yourank? Is it number eight? Yeah?
I have number eight man, Yeah, I only have two younger sisters

(48:00):
below me, but you have aton of older siblings. What was it
like growing up with that big ofa fan. I've got two kids.
I think that's too many something.No, I love them both. They're
great. But I grew up ina house with five we had I had
four siblings. Uh, that's youguys had double What were the challenges of
growing up with ten kids? Like, like, I your toughness probably came

(48:21):
into play because if you have whatthree brothers, So you've got three brothers
all older than you, I'm assumingthat you were you were in a battle
every day. Yeah, I wantto say battle every day. But like,
uh, they were definitely tough, tough on me. Uh. I
feel like that made me a toughkid growing up. You know, Like
I'll get in a fight at school, somebody hit me. I'm like,

(48:43):
dang, my brother hits harder ormy sister hits harder. Like it's like
stuff like that. Like that that'snothing. Uh, it's just like growing
up with a family. Their athletesof course too, so we're all competitive,
but like just like the dumbest thingslike trying to shoot like trash in
a in the bend, so whocan make it the furthest or something like
that. But yeah, I havea lot of three older brothers, four

(49:07):
older sisters, and I think mostof them are athletes. So who's the
best athlete who Okay, there's anNFL player now in amongst the ten,
but who's the best athlete. Who'sthe very best athlete among the ten of
you? Dang, it's yeah,is it one of my whole is it

(49:29):
one of the girls? Now that'sone of my brothers. Yeah, I
would say him because he was likea two way starter all four years in
high school. Yeah, so Iwould say him, but yeah, he
was. He was. He's actuallymy oldest brother that played football. He
set the tone for the rest ofus, like, yeah, when you
go to high school, you gottaplay varsity as a freshman, you gotta

(49:52):
play both ways. Kind of setthat tone, and he was really good.
I think it was like all conferencefour years too, something like the
wow, that's a that's a that'sa big bar. Well, you might
have passed. And when when JohnSchneider gave you a call, uh and
and selected you overall in the inthe draft. When you got that phone
call from John Schneider and I mightwhen coach huff actually I think they called

(50:13):
you. But what went through yourmind. What was that like for you
and your family? Dang, itwas, yeah, it was that was
a real moment, you know, just waiting for that phone call. But
uh, it was just crazy.I was just we're looking at this projector
focusing on what's happening in front ofme. But then as soon as I
got that call, my like focusjust throwned it in on everything they were
saying. I was just like, dang, I was just like, what

(50:35):
team is it? What team isit? And then they tell me the
Seahawks. I was like, oh, shoot, this is like I was
just thinking about everything Seahawks related, like all my interviews with all the coaches
that I've had, Senior Bowl,Zoom meetings and all that. But yeah,
I was just thinking about the opportunityto play out there, which is
which is pretty amazing because the sceneryis beautiful out there as well. You
went against the Seahawks coaches not onthe side, because they're both offensive coaches,

(50:59):
Ryan Grub the offensive corner of ScottHuffs, the offensive line coach.
What do you know about coach uhHuff? And now that you've got a
chance to spend some time with himand not be a competitor or a rival.
You gotta actually spend time with coachChuff. He's one of the highly
thought of offensive line coaches in collegefootball. Now he makes a transition in
the NFL. What's coach Huff likeand what was your what were your interactions?
But I like with him so far, I've heard only great things about

(51:22):
this guy, Coach Huff, AndI've worked mostly with his two tackles that
I got drafted and they got totell me about him and they said like,
yeah, when I got drafted, they text me like, yeah,
he's gonna coach you hard, butit's all out of love. He just
wants what's best for you. Andyou know, like working with him in
person, yeah, I got tosee that he just he just really cares

(51:45):
about us. That means a lotto me that he actually cares. Just
like redoing like drill work. IfI didn't get my right my hand place
of my feet right, like,he just makes me redo it and try
to make make sure it's perfect. And yeah, I think he's an unbelievable
coach. All the little details, that's what it separates put good and great

(52:06):
players. And I think you'll makeanybody on our old line, the great
offen to line. He'll make herold line great. So yeah, I'm
excited. Yeah, we are toowatching him make that transition from Washington over
to the Seahawks. I mean he'she put together the best offensive line last
year in college football. That's whatthe award says. I'll let you go
after this, tell us about mom. It's Mother's Day weekend. This weekend

(52:29):
we mentioned ten kids. That's alot growing up. You kind of touch
base. I talked a little bitabout your parents growing up and what they
meant to you on Draft Day.But I'll let you say this. It's
your It's Mother's Day weekend. What'syour mom all about? What does she
mean to you? What does shemean to you? True? I want
to say Happy mother Mother's Day toall the mothers out there. My mom.

(52:52):
She was Happy mother Day to mymom and my grandma who's in heaven
right now. But I was greatabout both my grandma and my grandpa and
when I moved in my parents tomy mom. So I'll say, have
my mother's did to my grandma andmy mom? They've done nothing but the
best for me. They do Theydid what they can from what they know.
And experiences. They definitely experienced alot. I just want to say

(53:15):
thank you, guys for being myrug, holding you down when times are
tough, just just being there really, because I know a lot of people
who don't have the mothers. Justshowing face me the world just brings a
lot of comfort and all that.So I just want to say thanks for
holding you down. Well. Ithink I think they did a heck of

(53:36):
a job. We've had a chanceto hear from you a couple of times
now and Draft Day and today.I think they did a heck of a
job. And we look forward toseeing you. Uh Mini camp coming up
right, I believe OTA's Are youable to come back up there? I
know sometimes there's limits to to whatrookies can do. When you back up
here, I'll be back up thereon Sunday. Nice, Okay, Okay,
yeah, we'll get after it.We can't wait to watch you on

(53:58):
the field this year with that Reworkoffensive line. Congratulations, welcome to Seattle.
Can't wait to see it. Youknow the utes. Everyone knows about
the utes down here as Husky fansand even as Washington State fans in our
city here, we're glad you're onour side now right, Yes, sir,
I'm glad too. Man, allright, congratulations, thanks so much.
Satoa Lemeya who is joining us hereon the beaconpulling hotline, and great

(54:21):
to have him on. And yeahman ten kids. Oh baby, that
is a lot. That is Thatis a busy, busy household growing up.
But I appreciate him coming on givingus some insight. It's the position.
Versatility is something that they had talkedabout so much during and then even
after the draft, and I lookedback on it. So he says he's

(54:45):
a lot more comfortable at guard, even though we played tackle. There is
obviously a need at guard for Seattle. There's no doubt about that. Christian
Haynes, I would be surprised ifHaines is not the is not the starting
right guard. Lemea, I thinkis a guy that is going to be

(55:06):
in the mix. I'm assuming they'llwant to hand He did play a little
left guard in rookie mini camp aswell. I would assume they're going to
kind of flip flop in both sidesbetween him. Bradford Lake and Tomlins said
they've got a bunch of bodies. Now, this will be really when we
get to training camp and even Otais in the mini camps, We're going
to see some competition on that offensiveline for spots that we probably really haven't

(55:30):
seen for a while. You know, you look last year, I mean
Cross and Lucas come in two yearsago, and Cross from day one of
training camp was the number one lefttackle if we remember Abe, and I'm
saying if you remember, like I'msaying this out loud, like people were
at every training camp, Abe wasn'tnumber one on day one. They kind

(55:51):
of made him as a third roundpick. Work a couple weeks, it
was obvious he was going to bethe right tackle. I think Stone Forsythe
was ahead of him for like aweek of training camp practices. Pete Carroll
doesn't give anything to any well,he gave it to Cross, but he's
the first round pick, and therewas nobody else there and so but Abe
Luke. But we all knew wecould say, ok, Abe's gonna be
your starting right tackles. So thoseguys from basically, if it's safe for
argument sake, day one, theywere right tackle, left tackle, the

(56:15):
guard positions. I mean Gabe Jacksonfirst and then Phil Haynes those that right
guard position was really never competed for. It felt like it should have been,
but it wasn't. And the leftguard the last few years has been
Damian Lewis, and then the centerwas whoever they brought in. You know
this, the same player, Austinblythe slash Evan Brown. The last two
years, there wasn't a lot ofI think we're gonna have a massive competition.

(56:37):
Is that translated into a better offensiveline? Who knows, Tom will
tell, But the two tackles ifhealthier set, there's no doubt about that.
The center, all due respect toNick Harris, is probably set.
But the guard positions and primary backuproles, but specifically the guard positions,
that is going to be an absolutebattle throughout training camp because Bradford he ain't

(57:00):
gonna give it away to anybody. That's just who and what he is.
That's how he operates. He struggledin pass protection last year. He's got
a long way to go. CanScott Huff change him, probably, but
he's got that. Then you lookat Christian Haynes coming in as a right
guard as a third round pick.He slots in there right away. If
Bradford stays on the right side. That's gonna be the battle. But Labaya

(57:21):
is going to be there right theretoo, both a left guard and right
guard and some position versatility. Ithink with all of those guys and all
those names and some true competition, gotta feel like this will be a better
offensive line. And I think it'sgoing to be better for this reason.
I've mentioned this a ton of times. I'm gonna say it again. It's
going to be a better, afar better offensive line for this reason.

(57:45):
In Scott Huff I trust, eventhough he's a damn Husky, I trust
this guy. This guy knows howto put an offensive line together. He
knows how to put a cohesive unittogether. That was proven like last year,
by and large, outside of acouple of games Brennan and Stone in

(58:05):
those guys game, a little bitof problems with the pass rush gave Penis,
a little bit of problems in theApple Cup. Certainly, what Michigan
did in the championship game was there. But by and large, man the
last couple of years, Michael Pennix, he had one of the cleanest pockets
in the country and that team ranbetter than anybody thought they would. Dylan
Johnson and company. This is this, This is going to be a better

(58:29):
offensive line. I can say thatwith full confidence. This will be a
far better offensive line because a huffand some competition of the guard spots.
As he mentioned, he gets backyour Sunday they have mini camp. When
is it next week? OTAs,I get all that stuff confused. At
some point, I only know whenwe're allowed to be there? When are
we When are we next allowed tobe there? Yeah? Okay, you're
not worrying about it until then, right, yeah? Exactly? Okay,

(58:52):
all right, we'll come back.I want to reset the day. We've
got a lot going on with mom'sweekend. We want your voice text coming
in as well. We'll Tassi talkabout. This is a new realignment in
college athletics, and this one Idon't want to say it came out of
the blue, because I know atleast one of the schools have been pushing
for it for a while. Butlocally, this is a pretty significant move,

(59:14):
especially in college basketball with what happenedtoday with the WCC expanding. And
I'm not talking about Oregon State andWashington State, but the WCC expanded today.
That's really good news for local basketballfans. We'll tell you about that

(01:00:00):
SnO Casino dot Com Seattle's closest casino, Well calle Me Casino, also
sales closest sportsbook. So big news, big big news in the world of
college athletic realignment as it pertains tous here. And there's a lot of
different layers to this, but storycame out today that Grand Canyon and Seattle
University are going to join the WCCfor the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six

(01:00:23):
season. The WCC, of course, the home of Gonzaga, Saint Mary's,
San Francisco, Pepperdine, Loyal,Merrymount, et cetera, et cetera.
The WCC has long been carried alldue respect sort of to Saint Mary's,

(01:00:44):
but the WCC at least in basketball, the biggest revenue generator, mostly
on the men's side, but evenon the women's side, where the women's
Gonzaga team has been good too.But the Zags have carried that conference's flag
twenty five straight NCAA tournament appearing issix straight Sweet sixteens. They are a

(01:01:04):
They've become a basketball blue blood.I know people don't like that. That
aren't Gonzaga fans, but they area basketball blue blood. That's what they
are in today's world. Those thingsevolve and change over the years. UCLA
can't hold a candle to them.Indiana can't hold a candle to them.
The teams that used to be quoteblue bloods in the sport aren't there.
The Gonzaga is more successful than allof them. Yeah, they have won
a national championship, but they areThey've played for one, and they're there

(01:01:28):
every year and they're a factor everyyear. Mark few and Gonzaga has long
been thought had been resistant to SeattleUniversity joining the conference. The conference and
new commissioner Stu Jackson wanted Seattle Universityfor wait for it, wait for it,
the Seattle TV market, even thoughSeattle University isn't really much of a

(01:01:54):
blip on the radar screen in termsof what we talk about and do here.
They're they're very much an afterthought. That's just the reality of where they
fit on the food chain in thelocal sports landscape. Yeah, I remember
when they joined D one, right, that was a big deal, but
then they had to hold out whenit came to the years Jill Barnes was

(01:02:15):
a coach. I think, yeah, it was a big deal because he
left Romar. But yeah, thatthat was really the most play they got.
Yeah, they they were, theywere there, but it was yeah,
they and they they moved in theWhack. Whack is not what it
used to be. You know,we've growing up. You think of the
WHAC as the whac that had BringhamYoung University as a football power, Utah

(01:02:38):
and schools like that that later formedthe Mountain West the WAX, doesn't you
know. And the Wax lost abunch of teams actually already to Conference USAVER
the last year or two, sothe Wax kind of disintegrating and see how
you playing in that conference. Itjust didn't gain any traction or excitement around
here. Now there's an added layerto that. Washington State, Oregon State

(01:02:59):
will play in WCC basketball for thenext two years. Actually all sports except
for football for the next two years. Oregon State baseball is independent, but
every other sport effectively besides football yeara WCC school for those two teams are
those two schools. There will beone year of a crossover where Seattle U,
Washington State, and Gonzaga will allbe in the WCC. That'll be

(01:03:20):
the first year that seat'll use init twenty five twenty six calendar year when
they start next year. It's expected, according to Stu Jackson, the commissioner
of the WCC, that after thenext two years that Washington State and Oregon
State they'll go somewhere else, reforma PAC twelve. It's when you can
do something with the Mountain West becausetheir TV contracts up, et cetera.

(01:03:40):
But for a year we're going tohave Seattle U, Gonzaga, and Washington
State in the same basketball conference. That'll be fun. I mean, that'll
actually that changes things. It alwaysmade sense for SEATTLEU to be in the
WCC largely well, they're all privateschools, many of them Catholic Jesuit schools.
It just seemed like a perfect fit. And there always was the rumblings

(01:04:02):
and rumors that the pushback came fromGonzaga. They didn't want to have to
compete in state with a team intheir own state. That's a like minded
school in terms of academics, religiousbeliefs, et cetera, all those things.
If we're being honest, Seattle, you love you. My parents are
both alums, my sister's an alum. You're not competing with Gonzaga for anybody,

(01:04:26):
Like Gonzaga is on a different plateau. They're a different beast. But
all of a sudden, it becomesa lot more relevant it Seattle you basketball,
because they're going to be playing inthe same conference as Gonzaga. That's
awesome, Like this is a big, big deal. I don't put much
stock in the quote Seattle TV market. I know it opens it up and
Seattle's on the marquee with the university. I don't know if that has much

(01:04:50):
to do with anything. I knowthat's a cell when you're going to school
presidents and you're making a vote andall those things. You know, with
Washington moving to the Big Ten,that brand becomes a lot more, even
more powerful than it was before. So that's hard. The Grand Canyon part
of it's interesting because if that soundsfamiliar outside the fact that it feels like

(01:05:13):
every kid in the state of Washingtonwants to go to school in Arizona these
days. In college, Grand Canyonwas just in the NCAA tournament and they
beat WCC member Saint Mary's if youremember, in the first round. That
was a huge, huge and GrandCanyon, this is the crazy twist here
goes into the WCC, this largelyCatholic Jesuit conference as a for profit Christian

(01:05:42):
school for profit being the key.I'd say most schools we know are not.
It doesn't feel like it these daysin terms of sports, but most
schools are not for profit. GrandCanyon is a for profit school. So
that was a battle too. Theother Gonzaga factor here that needs to be
discussed and people want to are kindof wondering about when this news came out

(01:06:04):
today, is this the WCC tryingto add before not just the deletions of
two schools that haven't played there yet, Washington State and Oregon State, which
again Sue Jackson, our commissioner says, you know, not to surprise anybody,
but they're going to be gone afterthe two years It's just a landing
spot for him. And you knowwhat, man, thank you to Jackson.
We appreciate you. You know,we needed a place to play.

(01:06:27):
Whatever happens with the Mountain West orwhat have you, other conferences. When
the ACC implodes in Stanford and calare gravel around looking for something to do,
Big ten gives them the middle finger. I mean, there's there's a
lot of stuff that's going to happenin the next two years. But the
bigger thing with Gonzaga was there's beenthese rumblings for a long time about Gonzaga
going to a bigger conference, theBig Twelve, as a basketball perhaps only

(01:06:51):
basketball only playing entity. Well, because of the amount of money they bring
into the WCC, that wasn't gonnafly with the WCC. Hey, you
can take basketball and leaving. No, we need the money. We like
the money coming in. We knowevery year we're getting you know, we're
getting money from March Madness because youguys are there. Well, twenty five
years, twenty six years, thatstory's not going to come to an end.

(01:07:11):
It almost did this year, andthen you saw them get on a
roll and it wasn't even close. And they're going to be pretty good next
year. It could be really goodnext year. But the Big Twelve been
kind of hanging out there for awhile. Is there a Big Twelve option
down the road for Gonzaga? Itdoes not appear. They just had a
Big Twelve commissioners or athletic directors meeting, Gonzaga wasn't on the agenda. And

(01:07:31):
the fact that Gonzaga does not havefootball. According to our buddy Matt Norlander,
who's Gary Parrish's buddy and partner onthe I in College Basketball podcast,
Norlander and others reporting that the BigTwelve has no appetite whatsoever for Gonzaga right
now because no football, no football, no desire. Yes, your basketball

(01:07:54):
program's great, but you know, the one conference it doesn't need another great
basketball program, the Big Twelve, because they're the best basketball conference in the
country, and as Gary told uslast year a number of occasions, they're
the best one in the country. And it's not close. The Big Ten
and the SEC are two and three. The drop off in terms of the
Ken Palm ratings and everything else ismassive. Big twelve doesn't need Gonzaga,

(01:08:17):
and they just got better because theyadded Arizona and they added Arizona State.
When they get rid of Bobby Hurly, they'll be better. They added Utah,
but mostly they added Arizona, sothey're better. That's a great basketball
conference. So it doesn't look likeGonzaga is going anywhere soon. So now
we have a conference which is justagain to me, it's just awesome.

(01:08:38):
We have a conference with those twowith two schools in our state permanently in
a sense, in Gonzaga in SEATTLEUand for one year, Gonzaga, SEATTLEU,
and Washington State will be competing forthe same champion, the same conference
title. They're affiliate members by theway, but Wazoo in Oregon State camp
unlike the Mountain West with football, they can actually compete in comfort for tournaments

(01:09:00):
and stuff like that. So that'sgonna be a blast in two years time.
I can't wait, Seattle you.I'm excited. I think it raises
the bar for the entire state, especially when it comes to recruiting. Well
because I always think Jess in thisterms and I and I should know better
because again my parents went there.I remember the great Seattle U teams when
I was growing up, when youknow, before they went to Naia when

(01:09:20):
they were Division one for many years. Hell the Sonics had a couple of
players Franko. Lennik and Roddrlin bothregards that came out of seattlu that played
for the Sonics in the seventies.Juwan Oldham they had some players. They
had some dudes that came out ofthere. I mean, the best one
ever obviously a guy named Elgin BaylorHall of Famer, pretty good. Clinton
Richardson went to Oda, played onthe seventy six ers Championship Games teams in

(01:09:42):
the early eighties. I mean, they had dudes, Eddie Miles, they
had a lot of guys, O'Brienbrothers. There's a great history of basketball
at SEATTLEU. When they dropped downto Naia, then it kind of went
away. As Jess mentioned, theywent back to Division one. But they've
never really we've been able to gaintraction. And I always kind of think
in terms of, well, wereally just kind of have the four teams

(01:10:04):
in the state that are Division onein basketball, Gonzaga, Eastern Wazoo and
you dub no we have five andnow honestly today, good news, we
have a legit five. And oh, by the way, I'd also expect
them to be playing all of theirgames at Climate Plagerina, because you're not
going to be playing a WCC schedulein a one thousand seat I don't know

(01:10:26):
what they call it anymore because theguy they're one thousand seat building on campus.
All right, good news today, awesome, congratlu Andrews. Go do
celebration. You'rer clu alum because you'rein the WCC starting not this season,
but the season after that as well. And Gonzaga doesn't look like it's going
anywhere anytime soon. Looks like they'restaying put. I'm sure the only person
not happy again is Mark Field.Okay, till your break come back.

(01:14:10):
what we have. It's a Friday. I was telling Jess earlier when she
first started working with me year anda half ago or so. You know
what, I'm lazy, I'm old. I get to Friday, I kind
of get the burnout. I am, well, you just work a long
week. I do. And Iget here and I look around. There's
nobody here, like sales staff's gone. They never come in on Fridays.

(01:14:31):
I'm driving in today. Thought therewas no free food out here. I
know, eighty degrees today the roadsare empty. Everyone's staying at home,
quote working from home. So we'vebeen joking for a while. My old
producer, Kevin hated when I saythis, it's a mail it in Friday.
But it's a mailed in Friday. So you know what we decided to
do. We decided to take themail it in Friday and make a fun
segment out of it. Welcome tomail it in Friday. So you know

(01:14:56):
what that means? Our midday hosthas tapped out and needs to lean on
his friends and the biz to carryus, sorry caboose, to the weekend.
It's time for friends of furness orthe guests he can bribe literally phone
it in while he blows off hiscommitment to his fans like an Oakland A's
owner, ladies and gentlemen, CaptainSlacker being for ness first time I heard

(01:15:21):
that. I can't argue with anythingthat was in there. But these are
going to be legitimate interviews We're gonnado on Friday with people that I've known
and have been you know, crosspaths with and friends in the business over
the years. That it's timely,it's relevant, and it's newsworthy. And
I was thinking today, I wantto do this anyway as head up to
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Aand check in with somebody up there.

(01:15:43):
No better person to do so thenwith an old friend who we crossed pass
for the first time back in theearly to mid nineties Jeff Patterson twenty five
years now covering the Vancouver Canucks. You can hear him on the Rink Wide
postgame and pregame podcast Sokaris and proI show up there in Vancouver and he
joined us right now on the BeaconPlumbing hotline. Jay pat how are you

(01:16:06):
ian? I'm great, and lookif the segment is mailing in Friday,
I am. I am your man. That's because when we first met,
we were working in the Western HockeyLeague. Jeff was the play by play
voice of the Kamloops Blazers and Iwas working for the Tri City Americans,
And yeah, I mean we workedseventy two days a year until playoffs,

(01:16:27):
Right, That's what we did. That's what people thought they that's what we
did anyway, but we did morethan that. But yeah, it's time
to mail it in. Normally thistime of the year you would be mailing
it in because the Canucks would bedone for the season, be talking about
the draft. But lo and behold, here we are in round two.
What's the vibe like up there inVancouver. Yeah, anytime in last decade,
if you'd asked me to come on, you would have found me on

(01:16:48):
like the seventh hole somewhere and havethe day tea time. And it's a
little different this time around. It'sincredible. It has been a dark decade
here in Vancouver for the Canucks justfor a number of reasons, mismanagement mostly,
and obviously that tied into the pandemic. And this is the first time

(01:17:08):
that there has been playoff hockey forthe people to consume in nine years.
There was the one playoff run intwenty twenty that was all done in the
bubble in Edmonton, and that's wherethe Canucks would be heading for Games three
and four here on the weekend. But game two of the series against the
others tonight, and the fan basehis body, and it really was incredible
opening night in the first round againstNashville again nine years sort of a pent

(01:17:30):
up frustration of the motion and theatmosphere has just been wild. And the
other night to spot the Oilers ofall teams, a four to one lead
and then run it back and arally to win five to four, Like
it's been a long time since I'veheard the building that loud, to feel
it in the straights here. Imean, it is a great hockey market,

(01:17:54):
but this is a torture fan basethat has seen the Canucks to get
the three Stanley Cup Finals and neverwin a championship. You know, at
the outset of the season there washopes they'd be a playoff team and yet
here they are now in the secondround with a one nothing lead on the
Oilers after a story and win theother night. So it's been fun.
There've been incredible moments along the wayhere and then producing the victories that they

(01:18:15):
have and a big night tonight,I mean a chance to take a two
nothing lead on CONNORC David and theedond Eulers if they can get the job
done again. Jeff Patterson Jonas fromVancouver. You can fall him on the
x Twitter app at Patterson with oneT. Jeff does a great job covering
the NHL and specifically the Canucks. As you're describing all of that, I

(01:18:35):
think our listeners are saying, Wow, I think you just described the Mariner
fan base like you just a torturedface. The difference is Vancouver that the
Canucks have actually played for a StanleyCup in the finals on a few occasions.
The Mariners haven't been to the WorldSeries. But boy, did that
just sound like a description of ourbaseball team down here, which also it

(01:18:56):
feels similar because I know what willhappen if this baseball team ever gets into
a deep run in the playoffs andplays a seven game series or two in
an ALCS and and god help us, maybe even a World Series. I
know what that would be like, because that there's no more desperate and hungry
fan base than, as you said, Jeff, the tortured fan base.
Well, it's funny and like Boydand Racer in Vancouver and said a steady

(01:19:19):
diet of the Mariners growing up.And you know, I was thinking about
that earlier this week in fact, that there are a lot of similarities and
I love getting down to I guessmobile now that's safe co before. But
yeah, as a guy that wasin the broadcast biz, and have been
in broadcast biz, they grew upwith the na House even across the border,

(01:19:39):
you know. So I've paid attentionto the Mariners and then all of
their struggles through the years. Youknow, I think the Mariners have probably
through the years had better individual talentwhen you think of Junior and you think
of Randon Johnson obviously and guy likethat. Yeah, yeah, you know,
the Conducts have had some really goodplayers along the way. But right

(01:20:00):
the difference is that three trips tothe Stanley Cup Final, two of them
have ended in game seven heartbreak, including twenty eleven on whole nice when they
just win one at home. Youplay all year to get game seven at
home, and they coughed up afur ball against the Brewins and got shut
out in fact in game seven. Then so it feels like a lifetime ago.
This is a new group, thenew team, new management, and

(01:20:24):
full credit to them for doing whatthey did in the first round against the
National Predators, took care of thepresident six and on. Now this battle
the first time in thirty two yearsthat the Canucks and the Oilers, two
Western Canadian teams, have gone atit. So the last time these teams
met in the playoffs is nineteen ninetytwo, way before social media, before
the internet, really, and soyou can imagine the sniping that's gone back

(01:20:46):
and forth in the fan base, and that's just kind of an added element
to all of this. But theOilers have had their successes through the years,
the Canucks have not. So yeah, I mean, we'll see what
happens nanton Colo McDavid. You know, he is the best player in the
National Hockey League, no doubt aboutthat, and yet, for the first
time in his playoff career, didn'tregister a single shot on goal in game

(01:21:10):
number one of his series. SoI think there are many here in Vancouver
that are a little nervous that O'Connoris going to have a bounce back game
tonight, that he's gonna take itupot of himself, not just have some
shots on goal, but to tryto find a few that get through Connuct
goal attending and could be a differencemaker the way he is most nights out.
So it was it was remarkable howquiet he was. Give the Canucks
credit. They had a strategy anda game plan to try to hold him

(01:21:31):
in check. But as you know, easier said than done, but they
did accomplish that on night one. We'll see what happens when put crops.
Just after seven o'clock here tonight isJeff Patterson joining us a host of rink
wide up in Vancouver, covers thatcan actually last twenty five years. Jay
Pattters, I'm as you're describing theEdmonton you know, and I was kind

(01:21:53):
of surprised listening and listening to allthe work you guys are doing up there
and getting ready for this series. And I'm just I grew up a Canucks
like you grew up a Maras fan, up a Canucks fan, and so
it's awesome to see where they're at. How would you describe the rivalry with
Edmonton and Vancouver and especially you know, the landscape down here in Seattle.
What would it be like for aSeattle team? I mean, you would
assume that it would be a greatrivalry with Edmonton and Vancouver. They're two

(01:22:15):
as you mentioned, Western Canadian teamsbordering, you know, providences provinces born
in together with Alberta and British Columbia. But without playoff history, a lot
of times out rival same rivalry doesn'texist. We never really had it with
the Portland trail basers, for example, with the Sonics. But how would
you describe the rivalry between the twocities. Yeah, you know what,
it really isn't a terrific rivalry, and as you said, so much of

(01:22:36):
that is born out of the playoffs. It's also important to note that no
matter what the Canucks and the Oilersdo, there's always going to be that
Battle of Alberta between Edmonton and Calgary, and you just can't supersed that based
on geography, right, Like, that's a provincial rivalry. They hate each
other and they made in the playoffsa couple of years ago. The Oilers

(01:22:57):
prevailed and you know they get tohold that over the Calgary Flames who didn't
make the playoffs here. So youknow, hopefully it can develop and build
into a rivalry. But as muchas the Canucks might want to look at
as a rivalry. The Oilers inthe Flames are always going to be,
you know, just at each other'sthroats because of where they're situated. And
that's why it's great to have thecracket in the NHL now and hopefully that

(01:23:19):
rivalry can develop. But I dothink that in most parts, but particularly
hockey, because the best of seven, he does feel like you need a
couple of playoff battles to really ratchetup the intensity. So, you know,
the other thing is a little bitof history when you think of Wayne
Gretzky and all of his years inEdmonton and Mark Messier for years, like

(01:23:40):
in my formative years in the eighties, the Oilers just owned the Canocks like
it wasn't even a fair fight. It was big brother against little brother every
night out. And so, youknow, I think people here in Vancouver
remember that the stand base has along memory, and even though those players
aren't involved anymore, time marches on, but you're left with sort of those

(01:24:01):
lingering memories of the others just beatingthe craft out of the Vancouver Canucks for
the better part of a decade whenthey were going on to win all of
their Stanley Cups. So yeah, you'd think it would be a better rivalry
just based on geography, but thereare some factors of play here that you
know, and even Game one withan idea, I was surprised because the
Oilers have a guy like Corey Perrywho has been through the battles and is

(01:24:23):
one of the great needlers in NHLhistory, and he was reminding since he
was thirty eight now, so hedoesn't play as much in as prominent a
role as he has throughout his career. But he was remarkably quiet, and
I think part of that was theothers had a big lead, you know,
things are going smoothly for them, and then the Canucks mounted this comeback
in the third period, and guysthat carry didn't play an awful lot.

(01:24:45):
So I thought there'd be a littlemore key than Game number one. And
again we'll see what hope over thecourse of a series like this one that
you get some of those individual battles. I didn't see a lot of that.
There were any penalties, in fact, which plays into the Canuck's hands
because the others have the best powerplay in the playoffs and was running at
close to fifty percent in the firstround against Los Angeles, So I think
they can actually want to stay outof the box. They need to stay

(01:25:08):
out of the penalty box. ButI just kind of feel like this thing
needs a little bit more fire toit. So didn't have it in game
one, but maybe you see someof that tonight. Jeff Patterson joining us
from Vancouver. I'd be lying ifI didn't admit every time I watched Vancouver
and see their improvement over the lastyear and see a team now getting into
the second round of the Stanley Cupplayoffs, and seeing this remarkable turnaround from

(01:25:30):
a year and a half ago tonow nineteen coaching changes since January of twenty
twenty three. One of those changeswas Rick Hockett going to Vancouver, and
the jealousy for us down here wouldbe the following. He was unemployed when
the Crack and were looking for acoach a few years ago, and he
seems to be a massive difference maker. My how things could have changed if

(01:25:55):
Ron Francis would have hired Rick Tockett. Perhaps, who knows how that would
have turned out here, certainly hasturned out well up there. What kind
of difference does coaching make? Aswe look for a new coach down here
Jay Patt in Seattle. What kindof difference has Rick Talcket the coach made
up in Vancouver. Yeah, waymore than I expected he. And to
be perfectly honest with you, Ihave seen enough coaching changes over the years

(01:26:18):
and the guys that they had inhere before Bruce Boudreau, who was,
you know, a decorated NHL headcoach, a guy that brought sort of
a specialty of his was coming inmid season and turning franchises around. And
then it's kind of ironic that theymoved off to him and they had to
go to Rick Hacket in January oftwenty twenty three. Anybody that remembers Rick

(01:26:38):
Hockett as a player, no nonsensese, tough as nails, but obviously hadn't
scored in pedigree as well. Youknow, he likes his offense, but
he still got that no nonsense approach, and this was a group that just
needed a reset, flat out. They just they needed to get back to
some basics. He is huge onstructure and wallwork and winning board battles in

(01:27:00):
Those kind of phrases have become punchlineshere in Vancouver, but they've also been
really effective for his team, andyou know, they gave up twelve goals
in six games against Nashville and theopening round. The Predators were one of
the best teams in the second halfof it NHL season, and so talk
it really has instilled this defensive systemand structure that when other parts of the
game aren't there necessarily they can sortof fall back. And yeah, they

(01:27:25):
gave up four the other night againstthe others, but honestly, they thought
they played pretty well and I don'tdisagree, and at the end of the
night, they found the offense necessaryto pull out a five four victory.
So Rich's been terrific to deal withfrom a media standpoint. He was doing
television on TMP before he took theCanucks' job, so you know, he
reminded us regularly that he gets whatwe're trying to do and tries to be

(01:27:45):
as accommodating as possible, and hehas been that. But when it's game
time, gets the game face onand he is all business. And you
know, I think the players respectthe resume that he brings from his playing
days. They know that this guywas, you know, a corific NHLer
and obviously has made the jump tothe coaching ranks now and he's done a

(01:28:06):
really nice job here and I thinkhe is the front runner to win the
NHL Coach of the Year. Hecertainly he's a finalist now down to the
final three, and you know,I think it's his award. He was
up against Andrew Burnette and Nashville andone of the other finalists and prevails in
that opening round. The voting isdown at the end of the regular season,
so the playoffs don't really matter. But yeah, he just breathed some,

(01:28:26):
you know, fresh air. QuinnHughes, the captain of the Canuxia
of the night, talked about aRick doing a nice job of removing the
stink that was all the organization whenhe took over. And yeah, I
mean they look and smell pretty goodright now, as they said here in
the second round of the playoffs. For folks watching tonight, it was certainly
not a battle of great goaltending inGame one between Stewart Skinner and Archers.

(01:28:46):
She losts they're both again going tonight. I don't think we're going to see
the former Thunderbird Calvin Pickard writing goalfor Edmonton anytime soon. And maybe it
was going to be de Smith butit looks like what she lost is going
to start tonight. What do youlook for in this game? People watching
it tonight, what should they belooking for. Yeah, I think for
the Canucks they want a better start. Certainly you don't want to fall behind

(01:29:08):
the way they did. It's funnybecause all the talk coming in to the
series was stay out at the penaltybox, don't put the others on the
power play, and forty seconds intoGame one they took a too many men
on the ice penalty and of coursethe only they're scored on their first power
play, but that was their onlypower play of the night. So again,
discipline was good from the Canucks.I don't know if you can expect
it to be that good. Youknow each and every game out here,

(01:29:30):
so you know. The quick storyon the Canucks goaltending is that Hillas is
their third string and this guy spentmost of the year in the American Hockey
League. But they've had injuries totheir top two guys, including their all
star factor Demco, so it's beena wildwide. They used three goalies in
the first round, all three ofthem posted a victory over the Natural Predators,
just the second time in NHL historythat the a team has prevailed in

(01:29:51):
the series with three different goaltenders gettinga victory. So you know they're they're
pretty far down on the depth chart, but silas they believe in them.
He's as poss You'll be a Canuck, probably a regular Canuck just starting next
season. But you know, gettingthrown in and it's one of those cases
of the you know we see itin sports. They maybe naive to it
all, just too young to knowbetter. Just get out there and stop

(01:30:13):
pox. And as you said,it wasn't a batter night for him,
he gave up four. But theguy at the other end of the ice,
he's got the heat on him,Stuart Skinner. Goaltending has been one
of the weaknesses of the Edmond theOilers, certainly in this McDavid and Leon
dryside le era and it was arocky start the other night. So I
think there's a fair bit of heaton this Edmonton team. They don't want
to go home down to nothing, knowing that they then have to win four

(01:30:34):
of the next five. You know, the Canucks are playing a little bit
of house money here getting through thefirst round again, there weren't huge expectations
at the outset of the season. So I think this is fascinating to me
that sort of the storyline here iscan the Canucks tip and the screws and
get another victory here and then whatdoes this series look like as it sifts
back to Edmonton. But again, they played the game on the ice,

(01:30:55):
so we can set it up thatway, but it's on the Canucks to
get out there ultimately and get thejob done. The atmosphere was crazy that
that expects to be the same wayup there tonight the Mariners of the National
Hockey League in the second round ofthe playoffs. J Pat, thanks for
coming on. I appreciate it.I probably bother you again. The deeper
they get, the more I'm gonnacall you. So I appreciate this and
enjoy the game tonight. Rink Whiteis the coverage. You'll find it there.

(01:31:15):
Look for Jpat on Twitter and youcan go find out all that great
coverage he does as well. Thankyou sir, well, And I should
just leave you with the fact thatformer cracking Carson Houscie I thought was spectacular
in Game number one. He's gotthe match up against Conor McDavid and did
a really nice job and holding himin check. Had a couple of assists
as well, So there you go. There's a slight Seattle angle too.
You know he sent mail it in. I'm I'm working hard for you here,

(01:31:39):
Ian trying to find some cracking angle. Well, I didn't want to
make him on your show. Ididn't want to bring up Susie because I
thought the same thing the other night. I thought he's playing I mean,
just watching him play in the playoffs, watching him play throughout the year,
a nice year, and you know, I mean, it's a downgrade going
from him to doom one. Moneycomes into play with salary cap. But
as soon as you said that,my producer adjustment just kind of wrinkled her
nose and goes. I didn't needto hear that. I didn't even hear

(01:32:00):
too. I mean, Alex Wendbergis gonna is in the second round.
Yeah, listen, it's the playoffsare chalk full of cracking players that were
traded for draft picks. So someof those draft picks, hopefully or just
let go in free agency, hopefullythose guys will come through. But yeah,
I go, Susie's one of thegood dudes. I know you've probably
dealt with him up there. He'sHe's really a great guy to deal with
and I wish the best for him. I'd love to see him carrying a

(01:32:24):
cup around at the end of theyear. So thanks j patt have a
great time tonight. Hey, itwas good catching up with you in person
in February when I was down forthat cracking game. Is the great again
today? I appreciate thanks. That'sJeff Patterson from Vancouver. We've known each
other for a very very long time. We'll do that everyfore. I will
grab somebody that I've worked with,'ve been around for a long time in
the business. I just wanted toget little Canucks update. And I'll be

(01:32:45):
honest with you that might have beenfor more for me than you guys,
because I just love the Canucks andI love the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs and
so. And he's a good guest. Yeah, he's he's awesome. We
he and I were doing the WesternHockey League grind riding buses throughout the prairies
of Canada back in the early nineties. He was in Kamloops and I was
in Tri Cities, and we've gotsome great stories to tell. We'll do
that someday he's he's a fun dude, and I'm thrilled for his success he's

(01:33:08):
having up there
