five KRC, the talk station.Welcome back here in the Garden with Ron
Wilson. Is time for the man, the myth, the legend, the
most listen to home improven show hostsin the entire world, in the entire
Solar system. His blog, GarySullivan, You proud of me, Danny,
his blog I am thanks Gary Sullivanonline dot com. Ladies and gentlemen,

(00:47):
the one, the only, misterGary Sullivan. Good morning, mister
Wilson, mister Sullivan, my questionto you run off the bet. Yes,
good morning. By the way,the time change last Saturday night falling
backwards. I have heard from severalfolks that are older than me, he
said, you know, as theolder you get, the harder that is

(01:10):
to make those adjustments. What areyou? What have you found? What
have you found so far? Ifound that this time change was the easiest
time change I've ever went through.I did there was no interruption in my
fragile little life. Run how aboutyou? You know I naturally wake up

(01:33):
at four, So now I'm naturallywaking up at three. Really yeah,
and it's uh, I got toget I'm hoping I eventually get out of
that. It's taken me a littlebit long. I use you a couple
of days. I'm in because Ilike this. This is where it should
be all the time in my inmy opinion opinion, I had like zero

(01:53):
problem. I usually get up atsix. Last Sunday, I got up
at six. Huh. And nowthe last days I've been getting up,
there's still about six. I havepretty much on bar. It was didn't
affect me. Well, it's goodand not that it ever affects me very
bad. Doesn't mean. But I'venoticed this week it just has taken me

(02:13):
a little longer to get from thatthree to four o'clock thing. But I'm
glad you referenced that I was olderthan you. I didn't say that.
You didn't have to say that. You implied it. I just said older
folks have told me that, andI was asking you by how you were
responding. I didn't say you wereolder. You implied it. Okay,

(02:37):
but I guess I am not bymuch there. Right, let's see here.
Secondly, have the Sullivan's decided yet? Is it artificial or live?
This year? It's artificial? Ron, I got bad news for you,
buddy. I even gave my liveChristmas tree stand away. Oh, so

(02:57):
we're done. I think we're done. It's not every other Well, the
only thing we might do is puta small a real big tree, yes,
just maybe over, maybe over. It's sad, by the way.
We're talking about live versus artificial Christmastrees, right, And I do I

(03:20):
do like the cut Christmas. Iknow. And you've gone back and forth
and alternated every year and had oneof each some of the years, and
we still may have one of each, but it'll be the cut one will
be a much smaller one. Howabout that. That's that's well, that's
what we've done, is that right? Oh? Yeah? Ours are four
foot now? Speaking of Christmas trees, yes, the show today will be

(03:45):
coming to you live from Charlotte,North Carolina. And on the way down,
guess what I saw Christmas trees.I saw cut Christmas trees in the
back of trucks being loaded and readyto go. Oh. They were on
the expressway run yep. And whereI was they were coming, I guess
from the North Carolina Mountains and theywere heading south and Suko's there's trees and

(04:13):
reefs like, there's no refs ontheir honey, They're all trees, and
they were they were reptight as canbe and that cut was just as fresh
looking as you can imagine. Yeah, you know, it is interesting today,
and you know I both both havebeen in the Christmas tree business over
many many years, through hardware andthrough garden centers. But you know,
back way back when how early theyhad to start cutting some of the trees

(04:35):
that today, how much closer theycan be to heart, you know,
to shipping time for harvesting those treesright and keeping them as fresh as they
can. Yeah, it was kindof a little startling really because I saw
this truck and I could tell itwas kind of, you know, kind
of a flatbed with a steak truck, you know, with them and so

(04:56):
I don't know how many were inthere, but there was a bunch and
I saw and I went, thoseare trees. Those are Christmas trees.
And I said to those are Christmastrees, and she was kind of like
really, and I'm going like absolutely, And then I start thinking, it's
like, well, it is themiddle of November. Heck, yeah,
twelve twelve days of Thanksgiving and youhave to have them set up by Thanksgiving

(05:17):
weekend. Yeah, exactly. AndThanksgiving. Yeah, that's probably the biggest
Christmas tree selling day is that weekendafter Thanksgiving. And that used to hardly
even be the start of it.You couldn't. You would get the only
people that came in on Saturday andSunday after Thanksgiving or Friday, Saturday Sunday,
we're looking for the twelve foot trees, you know, the big one.

(05:40):
Something special family was in town forthe weekend. Otherwise you spent the
whole weekend getting everything set up,and then you kicked in the gear the
following week Not anymore, You're right, that Thanksgiving weekend, man, everybody's
out. You go the following weekend. That's the second busiest by that.
Those two weekends are done. Wow, I remember it was always like the
eighth of December used to be likethe peak time eighth Yeah, oh yeah,

(06:04):
yeah, not anymore. Yeah,But when I saw that, I
instantly thought of your tips and thatis putting in a new cut at the
bottom. Here they are on theexpressway, you know, winds blowing and
everything, those things. I mean, they stay green for a long time,
but that little cut that they justmade probably three days ago will be

(06:28):
stealed over big time. Or further. I mean, you know scotch Pine
and that they can cut two orthree weeks ago and they'll usually do those
first and then all the rest ofthem will be the you know at the
very end. Of course, NorthCarolina one of the major suppliers have cut
Christmas trees, right, especially Fraserfirs. And that's what these were.
Yeah, that's exactly what these were, the little one inch needles and kind

(06:50):
of flat needles compared to the pricklyneedles. And isn't it amazing how that
has changed over the years. Now. Scotch Pine's still out there, is
still a huge cellar and probably laststhe longest of all of the trees that
you can use for a cut tree. But back in a year. Oh
yeah, but back in the day, you know, you had to find

(07:10):
somebody special to find Fraser furs. And now Douglas fir was the Cadillac back
then and now it's Fraser fur.And then of course everybody's got Fraser fur.
Yeah. So what part of NorthCarolina are they grown in? Uh?
There, you know, they're moretoward If I'm not mistaken, most
of those farms are in the northernpart of Carolinas Anti. Yeah, and

(07:33):
typically, uh, Christmas trees aregrown more on slopes in that places where
you normally wouldn't grow other crops. So they use that that property. Uh
you know that that the better becausethey couldn't use it for anything else.
So helps with erosion to they doall kinds of stuff, you know,
renewable crop, right, I meanthe environment at all. I love getting

(07:57):
into that argument with folks every notargument discussion every year about you know how
you hate I don't want to cutdown these trees and it's a shame that
we cut down all these Christmas treesor whatever. And you know, get
into the fact that it's grown asa crop and yeah, and to be
harvested. And every time they cutone down, those growers plant two more
happens every year, and of coursewhat they're doing during the time that they're

(08:22):
growing, and you know, it'sit's always an interesting discussion. But I
did write myself a note as we'retwo weeks away from Thanksgiving to find out
whether these Sullivans had gone artificial orlive. Sorry sorry to report that,
But another thing, if you couldjust disclaim the you know, it seems
like we got a scare tactic foreverything in the world now, including Christmas

(08:43):
trees. Well, if you geta live cut Christmas tree, the praying
mantis will be flying through your livingroom. Oh yeah, yeah. And
you know what's interesting, they actuallyhave people to go through and clip those
out. Now, obviously some getthrough inspection, no, but the Christmas
tree growers purposely go through and inspectas many as they can to make sure

(09:05):
that those aren't on there, andif they do come out, it just
adds to another Christmas story. It'sa flying ornament, you know, yeah,
it's you know you guys, Yeah, that's it. Pregnantis. I'll
I'll tell you when I heard thatlast year, and you know, it's
been like that for one hundred years. Oh yeah, and maybe in one
hundred years you might have one.But you know, when I heard it

(09:28):
last year was like this big warning. It's like it was like it was
an epidemic or something. Yeah, big digging for news. So what are
you gonna talk about today? We'regoing to talk about painting and keeping the
gutters going because the leaves are aboutdone where I'm at, I can listen
to the last one, but notthe first two. Okay, we'll do

(09:50):
it anyway, Okay, I willthank you Gary Sullivan, all right,

sponsors. Thanks of course to ourproducer Danny Gleeson, because without Dan Lease
