(00:23):
Here at fifty five KRCD Talk Station. Welcome back. Here in the Garden
with Ron Wilson has been a sofar a show filled with just all kinds
of show stoppers, all of ourregulars that we have on our show on
a regular basis, filling us inwith all kinds of great yardning information with
their expertise, and of course notonly just around our area, but we

(00:45):
reached to the South. That's right, because we have our own Southern gardener.
You all know Himan just as amatter of fact, he has one
of the best books out there iscalled Southern Gardening All year long, and
if you want to sign copy,he'll tell you how to get it.
Get that we'll find out we gethim on the air here, but he
is tell you what, he's Northernborn, but Southern gardener. You can

(01:07):
find him a Gary Groves at HeritageCottage, Ladies and gentlemen, the one,
the only Gary Blackman. Hey,good morning, Ron, Good morning
sir. How are you. I'mdoing fantastic. I'm glad that you kept
all the burdens you know, overfor my segment here. That was a

(01:29):
nice touch. What can I say? So did you have a great Thanksgiving?
Look? We had kind of aeasy go away. Well, we
had kind of a quiet Thanksgiving. We didn't travel, but we went to
a friends giving. A friend ofours does a Thanksgiving drop in for who's

(01:51):
ever not traveling, and so Istud half the day with them. I
had had fun doing that. Butwe'll go up and see family coming up
next month and then in January again, so we'll see everybody that we need
to. So when Gary Bachman, the Southern Gardener, steps up to the
Thanksgiving table and he looks across thetable and you can't say ham or turkey?

(02:14):
What is the big thing you alwaysfocus on? Every year? Oh?
My, you know this this isgonna sound funny, but I love
the greens. The greens, homehomegrown greens, kale, collards, all
those kinds of things. Love thatinteresting because we didn't have any of that
at ours. Oh really no,Well we had like you know, you

(02:38):
had green beans and we had asolid right, but but no cook greens,
cook cook greens. But but Iwill tell you for from a friendsgiving,
I brought a batch of my worldfamous kale chips. Oh for everybody.
Oh and then so you know kalesuper food, right yeah, and

(02:59):
yousp them up and they kind ofcrack, you know, and they're crispy
like chips. So you know,if my opinion is, but you can
need a whole bowl of those andyou know, kind of feel good about
yourself. They're eating something healthy insteadof the whole bowl of potato chips.
Oh you know what, I willdo that or do the broccolini or whatever

(03:19):
that is the Yeah, and I'llput that little olive oil on top and
put that in the and broil it, yeah till that gets cristy. Yeah,
and then put a little seesaw.Oh man, now you got me.
Thursday, Yeah, my salivate thesalivary glands are going well. Everybody
this morning said cranberries. Oh,well, you know, I I you

(03:43):
know, I don't know. Camein late listening to that and I heard
the cranberries. Cranberries are good, but I like the ones that have come
out of a can. So youhave wife Kate homemade. She likes to
make the you know, the homemadeyou know, start with the berrys.
I like it out of the can. And the main reason is because the

(04:03):
slice marks are on it. Youknow how you can go ahead and slice
it up wise from the indentations fromthe can. Right, Yeah, people
think it's just from the can.No, No, it's to help you
with the slicing. And never lookedat it that way. Yeah, I'll
be darned. Huh. Now youknow what, you know what I focus

(04:25):
on and everybody thinks I'm nuts.I focus on the green onions. Now,
I'm kind of im kind of inthe same level as you there with
the greens, but I love thegreen onions. You got to have green
onions with all of this stuffing, gravy, the sandwiches afterwards, you got
to have a green onion on theside. Yeah, we have. I
almost have green onions ready to gotwelve months out of the year in the

(04:46):
refrigerator because I do love those, you and me both. Man, I
could eat those, eat those allthe time. So talk about Gary Bakman.
He's our Southern gardener. And ofcourse to check out his book it's
called Southern Gardening All Year Long. It's absolutely wonderful. If you live in
the northern state, just back itup about you know, just had about
three weeks on the timing from hisbook and it applies to the Northern States
as well. But you know, you've got one hundred and thirty six or

(05:12):
give or take earth boxes in yourbackyard. Did you grow everything in?
What are we seeing them right now? Right now? Last weekend, I
planted thirty five of them in onionsand garlic. I'm gluing garlic for the
first time. Oh I'm going totry that. Yeah, but thirty five
of them, and I've got twentyonion little onion bulbs in each box.

(05:36):
Are any groone those for slicing onionsor just for green onions. It'll end
up there'll be some slicing onions.I will harvest some of them before they
get big, and so they're kindof you know, more like like like
a complex spring onions, yeah,or or you know, some will get

(05:56):
harvested and used, you know asthe green onions, slice, slice them
up, so you know, thirtyfive boxes the onion sounds like a lot.
It really isn't. Around my house. They goes pretty fast. So
with the with the garlic, thenyou'll grow that, harvest that. How
early will you be able to harvestthat next year? You know, I

(06:17):
don't know. I've never grown garlic. Oh okay, all right. We
were down in Florida last month visitingnurseries and I saw that this one nursery
had garlic that was suitable for theOrlando area. So it's like, well,
if they can grow garlic there,I mean, why can't I grow
it in my yard. So Igot some of their Southern selection garlic and

(06:41):
I'm going to try that. We'llsee what happens with that. Cool Dixondale
Farm Onion Farm. Go to theirwebsite sometime, Dixondale Onion Farm. They're
in Texas, and look at someof the info he's got about southern onions
in there. He's got some greatinfo for you and garlic as well.
So check check that out. I'mright down right now, I'm gonna I'm
going to check that as soon aswe get off the phone. Sounds good

(07:03):
talking about the Gary Bark when heis our southern gardener. Anything else going
on in this And I know youRon Rothos said that you guys are really
dry right now. We are.We are dry. We're about twenty five
inches below normal. Wow, we'reIs that just Mississippi or all the states
are through there, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, all in that in that

(07:27):
Gulf Coast region. You know,we were to the point where it's like,
you know, it be kind ofnice to had just like a little
tropical depression come through, you know, and and and dump dump some rain.
Uh. But there was an eightweek period there where we had a
half inch ter rain when we hadthe one hundred plus heat indexes during that
same time, and it just tooka toll on all of the all the

(07:48):
gardens and yards you know here inthe you know, the extreme Gulf South.
Even with my irrigation, I couldn'tkeep I couldn't keep everything irrigated,
even though I've got the you know, the prep irrigation out. Wow,
that's crazy. So for Southern lawns, And obviously as you get into the
tour, is the season why he'sdown here? They go dormed anyway,

(08:09):
But does that set them up forproblems next spring? It could. I'm
expecting to see a lot of problemspop up that people are going to say,
oh my gosh, this just happened, and I'm going to say,
no, that actually happened last Julyand we're just seeing the results of it
right now. Yeah, that's usuallythe way that works too. Talking about

(08:33):
