On this week's program host, Phil Tower, welcomes Eric Hultgren, Director of Brand Strategy and Social Media, M-Live. Eric joined Phil for the full program for a review of some of the biggest media stories of 2023, and many of them are still making news on a regular basis in 2024. Among the topics we discussed was the state of "X" after the sale and rebranding of Twitter by Elon Musk. Musk changed the name of the social media site that he bought for $44 billion in October 2022 and raced to offend users, chase away advertisers, and create a lot of controversy along the way. We also discussed the impact of BarbenHeimer on the box office. Barbie and Oppenheimer were by far the two most successful films from 2023. Today, the two films have brought in well over $2 billion with their combined performance at the worldwide box office. Other media topics were covered, including TikTok fending off numerous lawsuits in the United States, the so-called Media Trial of the Century that never happened as Fox News agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million to settle the case of court, the tumultuous year for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the Taylor Swift Impact on...everything, and much more.
