Sometimes the hardest thing to do… is nothing. In this episode of the Angry Dad Podcast, I break down the importance of taking a day off to recharge. From grinding nonstop with family, work, and life obligations, to finally forcing myself and my wife to take a break on Labor Day weekend—this episode is about why rest is just as important as the hustle.

this weekend was Labor Day weekend and Sunday, Monday was
one of those days that wasn't really Monday, it was
more just Sunday. One of the things that you know,

(01:27):
me and my wife we constantly complain about is we're
doing too much. And what I mean we're doing too much?
You know, we're running here, we're running there. We're always
scheduling things that need to be done, or we need
to go, or we just need you know, life is busy.
That's just what it is. Life is consistently busy, and

(01:47):
especially when you know you only have so much time
during the day, so much time during the weekends, when
you have kids, you got dogs, there is family, There's
just so many things that need to happen and need
to get done on a regulars And we've been complaining
for the last couple of weeks that we're tired, we're
doing too much. Why do we keep doing this to ourselves?
Why do we keep scheduling all these events? Why do

(02:09):
we keep showing up? The thing is is, guess what,
they're fun. We like seeing our family, we like seeing
our friends, We like going places. You know, like I said,
we like to invest our time into things that make
us happy. But here's the thing. We were exhausted. We
were tired. You know what I'm saying. We're so used
to doing things that when we actually take a day

(02:32):
where we don't do a thing, and this is what
I'm saying, Like I said, Sunday was one of those
days where like we force ourselves to stay home, like
I said, Slabrity weekend. We could have been to the lake,
we could have been to the river, we could have
There's all kinds of things that we could have done,
but we were so physically and mentally exhausted from just

(02:56):
the rigors of life doing everything, going everywhere, seeing everybody
making plans, school, fucking games, traffic, work, fucking you know what,
you name it. All right, we all have those priorities.
We all have those things. And guess what, we we
we plan, we plan, we plan, we schedule, we schedule,
we schedule, and guess what, you know, it does catch

(03:18):
up to you. But we finally had a day where
we can be like, look, we're not doing a goddamn thing.
We're sitting down, and we tortured ourselves and when I mean,
we tortured ourselves. It's hard to be doing nothing. It's
hard to recover, it's hard to relax. It's hard when

(03:38):
you're always on the go. You know that we we
it's almost like that sense of purpose is lost for
the day because we're usually always doing something, you know
what I'm saying, Cleaning the house, fucking you know, taking
care of paperwork, fucking managing the kids, managing work life balance,
fucking grocery, shore stopping, fucking close shut. Like I said,

(04:00):
just you name a fucking task that needs to be
done on a regular basis. We all have our routines,
we all have the things that we have to do.
But here's the one thing out of all the things
that we were doing. We were just like nippicking at
things that like I wanted to watch this show I'm
gonna make. You know, my wife likes to draw, so

(04:20):
she she made a few things on her iPad. You
know what I'm saying. We're we're usually so locked in
on life that we fucking just you know, run ourselves
ragged and exhausted and tired and never actually take that downtime,
you know what I'm saying. And it doesn't have to
be a whole fucking weekend. You know, we do take vacation,

(04:41):
we do fucking you know, enjoy our lives. But the
thing is is, you know, for the fucking rest of
the fucking year, we're running on all cylinders. You know
what I'm saying. We're fucking we're on the fucking go,
We're on the fucking move. We're just you know, we
have projects, we have fucking hobbies, we have things that
we want to do with our lives, and it requires
us to always be putting an effort. But here's the thing.

(05:04):
We took a very specific day. We're like, look, we're
let's go to the store and we're not shopping for groceries.
We're gonna pick something up for dinner that's gonna be easy,
fun and delicious. And this is our together time to
where we can relax and enjoy. Our daughter was with us,
or you know, our sons ate with us. But here's
the thing. We didn't go with a purpose. We just

(05:27):
went with We're just gonna get these ingredients, find a
few of the things, make a dessert, fucking sit down,
fucking relax, eat dinner as a normal fucking family and
just enjoy talk shit, fucking talk shop, you know what
the fuck's going on, that kind of fucking shit. But
here's the thing. The rest of the fucking day, I'm

(05:49):
forcing myself to sit on the couch. I'm forcing myself
to fucking watch TV. I'm forcing myself to fucking do
things I don't normally fucking do. But I needed it.
I physically and mentally needed a nothing day. You know
what I'm saying, Nothing drawing on my mind, nothing drawing

(06:10):
my attention, nothing fucking pulling my life away from me.
You know what I'm saying, That effort, that life essence
that we all fucking have when we're fucking young, Like
I can do it all and all this stuff. You
get to a certain age, you guess what you ain't
doing at fucking all. I needed to break. My wife
needed a break, and God the fuck damn it, that
break fucking felt good the next day, Like we complained

(06:30):
the whole day on bored What do you want to do?
Do you want to go somewhere? You know what I'm saying?
Should we get this or you know what I'm saying,
Like I said, we're just we're like those people who
constantly walk to the fridge, open the door. Is there
anything good to eat? And you know there's nothing fucking
good to eat, You've already looked a thousand fucking times.
But we just keep opening closing the fucking door because

(06:52):
we didn't have any responsibilities that day. We didn't have
anything to do except for feed ourselves and entertain ourselves.
You know what I'm saying, That's just what it is,
and sometimes you need those fucking days to really recharge
the fucking batteries. That's exactly what we did. We recharged
the fucking batteries so we can live our life again.
You know what I'm saying. Every swafter you need a

(07:12):
fucking moment, You need a break, you need a breather,
you need to be able to fucking be like, Okay,
this is what it feels like to do nothing. It sucked,
it absolutely fucking did, but it felt fucking good. Absolutely
fucking felt good. You know what I'm saying. Like I said,
I slept better, I felt better. I fucking just I

(07:33):
needed a little bit of space from life, which we
all fucking do. We I absolutely need a little bit
of fucking space, a little bit of fucking time, a
little bit of a fucking breather just to get our
shit to fucking gether. That's what I'm saying. You know
what I'm saying. We need that shit. You need to
enjoy that shit. You know, a little fucking downtime goes

(07:55):
along fucking way, which it absolutely fucking did. You know
what I'm saying. I fucking needed it. You know what
I'm saying. My wife fucking needed it. You know. It's
just one of those things. But that's that's what I'm saying.
You know, it's recognizing these cues, you know what I'm saying.
It's not it's understanding that you don't need to be
all gas, no breaks, all the fucking time. Sometimes you
gotta step on the fucking brakes, pull that fucking e brakes,

(08:18):
slide right into the fucking I'm not doing a goddamn
fucking thing today, you know, because that's the fucking the breather,
that's the fucking you know, head above water, like I
just fucking catch it, catch a deep fucking breath before
I fucking gotta dive right back into what the fuck
I'm doing. You know, we push hard, We push hard,
We push hard, not constantly talk about grinding and doing

(08:40):
what it fucking takes, and fucking just push and push
and push. You can find a will, you can find
a way. You can fucking make it. But that's the thing.
Every so often, life's gonna fucking knock you straight in
the fucking dirt. You know what I'm saying, It's gonna
be a good dirt. Now, you know what I'm saying,
It's gonna be a good fucking like. I'm need to
fucking chill. I need to relax, I need to rest, recover,

(09:04):
and fucking all that fucking bullshit. I fucking needed it.
I fucking definitely need and I know my wife fucking
needed it too, because the fucking next day we're like,
all right, let's fucking do something. Let's get back on
the fucking the track. Let's you know what I'm saying,
That's just what it is. That's just what it is.
Understanding and recognizing. You know, some of those days, you
you need to fucking breathe, you need to calm, to

(09:27):
fuck down, I need to relax, you need to fucking
stop firing on all cylinders. You need a fucking just
idle for a little bit, because that is gonna help
you in the longer fucking run. It's, you know, it's
something we don't get to do every fucking day of
our lives. We definitely don't get to fucking enjoy that
on a regular day fucking basis because we're constantly fucking

(09:47):
doing shit. We're constantly fucking moving, we're constantly fucking working,
We're constantly you know, up to something, and it's fucking good.
Everybody fucking needs a passion, Everybody needs a fucking hobby,
everybody needs to be to have purpose in what they're
doing in their fucking life. But at the same fucking time, sure,
you can burn that fucking engine out real fucking quick,

(10:09):
you know what I'm saying. You burn that candle on
the boat, fucking ends, it eventually fizzles the fuck out
in the middle. That's what I'm fucking saying. That's what
I'm fucking getting to. You know what I'm saying. It's
it's understanding this breather, this fucking break. And even if
you got a fucking plan it, even if you'd be like, look,
we're not doing nothing here, we're not doing nothing here.
We have this fucking day. Guess what the fuck we're doing.
Not a goddamn fucking thing. You know what I'm saying,

(10:31):
something pops up, something pops up, But at the same
fucking time, rest, recover, relax, fucking recoup, take care of yourself.
And then after that shit, you can lock the fucking
you can fucking dial it the back, dial it right
back to fucking ten, Get back on them fucking horses,
fucking you know, get that fucking motor fired up and
fucking running, because you're gonna have those days and you're

(10:53):
gonna have these days. And that's just fucking what it is.
You know what I'm saying. Like I said, we complain
the whole time about it. I'm bored. I don't want
to like I want something to do. I fucking you know,
it's like, uh, you know, how do people do this ship? Well,
guess the funk what people do this ship because they
need this ship, So guess the funk. What does the
angry motherfucking dad. You want to watch my ship? YouTube?

(11:13):
You want us to do a speaker, soundclouds, sitter, Spotify,
Google Play, Apple podcast, pot being, SoundCloud, deser iHeartRadio. This
motherfucker that we can easily fucking find it, rate review, like,
subscribe all that fucking bullshit. It really helps me to
