Jennifer Longworth from Bourbon Barrel Podcasting sent us a question regarding some recent lab work that her doctor wanted to discuss with her. She has an amazing podcast and talked about many topics including Bourbon and craft beer. Her website is BourbonBarrelPodcasting.com Let me thank Jennifer for sending in a great question about Sugar Fats in her cholesterol lab panel. When we talk about cholesterol, we actually need to know 3 or 4 different numbers. Cholesterol isn't just one thing - it's really a combination of several different particles. Cholesterol is necessary for the human body to create healthy hormones and steroids. It's also used to create skin, nails, and other tissues in the body. Total cholesterol is a combination of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL stands for low density lipoprotein and is the bad cholesterol. This is the one that creates blockages, clots, heart attacks, and stroke. HDL stands for high density lipoprotein and is the good cholesterol. People with high HDL have better blood circulation and lower cholesterol levels overall. Triglycerides are also called "sugar fats". These are found naturally in food, but many people have extremely high levels of triglycerides due to a family history or genetic component. Some people with liver problems have triglycerides that are in the thousands. This is true even if those people don't eat sweets, junk food, or meat. The goal with cholesterol is to look at the big picture. If all of your numbers are in good control, then there's no reason to change your diet. However, if your numbers are getting worse over time or you have other health issues, then it's wise to consider some lifestyle changes. Having a cholesterol checked once a year is a good starting point. Discuss the results with your doctor and see what will be best for you and your health.
