The defendants were 9 and judge George Ray presided over the jury. An elderly magistrate who had already tried counterfeiting cases. Lupo and Morello had hired the lawyer Mirabeau L. Towns for their defense. He was a highly qualified American lawyer, with the advantage of speaking in Italian.
