E 38 Changing The Narrative: Not All Muslims or Arabs Are Terrorists

In episode 38, Aalia is joined by Joud AlAmri, a Saudi Arabian film director, screenwriter, and producer with a background in photography and design. AlAmri begins the conversation by explaining her motivation for entering the world of filmmaking (5:17), the barriers she broke down to make it happen (7:30), and how she fine-tuned her focus (10:49). She addresses the importance of her short film, Belonging, and how it helped her find her place between two worlds (12:50). Together, Aalia and AlAmri discuss shattering misconceptions and increasing representation of Muslims in the film industry (19:10). As well, they debunk the idea that one Muslim, especially if they are in the spotlight, is able to or must represent their entire religion and community (27:46). Instead, they urge any creative to just speak openly and honestly (31:43).
