When Sharet Garcia crossed the border to the United States, all she knew was that she’d follow her mother anywhere. Now, after years of both women fighting for Garcia to get the education that her mother lacked, Garcia joins Aalia for an intelligent discussion of the DACA program and the immigrant experience. Garcia is the founder of UndocuProfessionals, a mentorship and career opportunity program for undocumented workers and students. Garcia recounts her experience as a young girl crossing the border (9:30) and the hardships she faced once in the United States (14:15). Aalia emphasizes how much immigrants contribute to the US economy with some staggering numbers (17:45), which leads to a discussion of Garcia’s experience with the DACA program (21:35). DACA afforded Garcia critical opportunities, but it’s still not enough for the undocumented community to prosper. After being discouraged from pursuing an education for her whole life, Garcia, who has earned a B.A., M.B.A., and now is a Doctoral candidate, founded UndocuProfessionals to provide the undocumented community with the mentorships and opportunities that she did not have (32:15). We all want a brighter future for those that follow in our footsteps. Garcia warns that the DACA program is the bare minimum, and yet it’s still in constant peril.
