Madonna has taken the anthemic route for her new single.
Days after performing the 2019 Billboard Music Awards Wednesday (May 1), the Queen of Pop has given us something to sing along to with her latest song, "I Rise," an inspirational track that rising to the occasion against all odds. The record, which premiered Friday (May 3), opens with a sample of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School school shooting survivor Emma González's speech demanding stricter gun control in response to the massacre.
Then, as González's words fade out, a thumping, mid-tempo beat takes over with an auto-tuned Madonna launching into the pre-chorus. "I'm going through it/ Yeah, I know you see the tragic in it/ Just hold on to the little bit of magic in it," the pop icon chants on the tune, "Died a thousand times/ Managed to survive/ I can't break down now."
With producer credits to Jason Evigan and the 60-year-old songbird herself, "I Rise" celebrates the second offering from Madonna's forthcoming album, Madame X, after her Maluma-assisted jam "Medellín" released last month. The legendary artist and her Columbian collaborator premiered the latter team-up at the 2019 BBMAs with a hologram-heavy presentation that became one of the most-talked about performances of the show.
Madonna's first LP in four years and her fourteenth studio album releases June 14.
