Selena Gomez was on pins and needles before dropping her new album.
Ask any Selenator and they will tell you how elated they were when the "Lose You to Love Me" songbird finally announced her long-awaited follow-up to 2015’s Revival. While Gomez was hopeful about her third LP, she was just as terrified about releasing it to the world.
In a new interview with Dazed, Gomez details the fears she had about entering her Rare era. When recalling the scariest part of officially dropping her return after all the time that’s passed since Revival, she admitted, “That no one would like it and my career as a singer would be over. I genuinely thought that.”
“I worked so, so hard on this album. It could have come out and completely flopped, and then it’s like, well, where do you go from here?” she continued. “I would have questioned everything because I doubt myself and that’s where I would have ended up – in a spiral. So I’m glad that it’s doing well. But I did everything I could to make it as personal and real (as possible).”
Despite whatever misgivings she had, Selenators pulled through for their fave—Rare would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 just a week after its release. What's more, Rare also became Gomez's third consecutive number-one album following Revival and 2013’s Stars Dance — which both debuted at No. 1.
