Britney Spears has been granted permission to expand her legal team in her conservatorship battle against her father, Jamie Spears.
On Wednesday (October 14), the pop titan, 38, won a big victory against her father after a judge granted her petition to request her legal team to be expanded, per Variety. Spears has been attempting to remove Jamie from her 12-year conservatorship, which has been place since 2008. Initially, Jamie had opposed his daughter’s petition, arguing that the cost of adding more lawyers as his reasoning. "Clearly, James' objectives are either to filibuster the appointment of a corporate fiduciary indefinitely or to dominate the entire process himself, including the selection of the fiduciary," her sole attorney, Samuel Ingham, contended in a filing last week. "The only way to assure that Britney's voice is heard will be for her to have qualified litigation counsel available in order to place her on a level playing field with James."
According to an August filing, the star’s attorney said that Spears was "strongly opposed" to having her father remain the sole conservator in her case. "Britney strongly believes it is consistent not only with her personal best interests but also with good public policy generally that the decision to appoint a new conservator of her estate be made in as open and transparent a manner as possible," her attorney wrote at the time.
Jamie became his daughter’s sole conservator in 2019 after attorney Andrew Wallet resigned from his position. Britney is petitioning to have her temporary conservator, Jodi Montgomery, take on the role permanently.
