A vulgar sign randomly popped up in a Sacramento neighborhood causing concerns for the community.
Candace Taylor alerted CBS13 after stepping outside in her quiet Rio Linda neighborhood to see a sign with a shocking message.
"It's not just us - it's the whole neighborhood," Taylor told CBS13. "It impacts everybody."
The sign was filled with expletives and was too vulgar to air on television or CBS13's website.
According to people in the area, the sign stayed up for a little over a few days. It could be seen from the street and from a nearby church parking lot.
Some community members believe it could have been put up by a "nightmare neighbor." The sign happened to pop up soon after neighbors reported suspicious activity in the vacant property that the sign was placed.
“I don’t care what you have against somebody else, that’s just not right,” Marianne, another neighbor that lives nearby, told CBS13. “Because of what it says, which are words I won’t say on camera. If it wasn’t private property, I would have already knocked it down.”
Sacramento County code enforcement said the sign was in a "grey area" between free speech and the county sign ordinance.
"If this was put up by the owner of the property, this would absolutely be considered protected speech," said first amendment expert Jeffrey Kravitz.
The sign was eventually taken down on Thursday, March 25, by Sacramento County code enforcement.
