A Colorado company is being recognized this Earth Day (April 22, 2021) for its environmental impact.
Biochar Now's mission statement is "to restore the Earth for Humanity." This year's Earth Day theme happens to be Restore Our Earth making it a perfect match.
Biochar Now first started in November 2011 and is now considered a pioneer in the biochar industry. Through their own research and studies, they continue to focus on making and selling quality biochar on a large scale.
The company takes old wood, shreds it, and burns the pieces at temperatures three times hotter than a normal fire. The end product is a charcoal-like substance without releasing contaminating fumes.
Biochar Now also takes old utility poles, railroad ties, and charred logs from Colorado wildfires.
"Because if you leave the waste wood in the forests, it will rot away and carbon goes back to the air," the company's CEO James Gaspard told Denver7 in an interview. "If you put the old crates in a landfill it converts to methane, which is even worse than carbon dioxide."
The company has plans to expand in Oregon and California, which are also heavily impacted by wildfires.
Gaspard believes they can even help prevent the amount of destruction by removing dead trees before the fires start.
Biochar Now will be recognized for its role in regenerative agriculture on Earth Day and a documentary will air on April 22 on EarthDay.org.
