One Utah family got a rude awakening when they took a 23andMe DNA test, reported ABC 4. The DNA test kit revealed that the couple's child isn't the father's biological son.

The couple, Vanner and Donna Johnson thought that it might be fun to do a DNA test, but instead it informed them of an IVF mix-up.

Vanner said, "When I looked on that page and saw mom for him and saw father unknown and I thought what do you mean father unknown I am his father."

The couple began their journey with IVF in 2007. Now, over a decade after giving birth to a baby boy, they never thought they'd experience a mix-up like this.

Donna said, "When my results showed up showing two sons immediately and seeing our oldest was a half-sibling to his younger brother, through me, we knew there must’ve been something wrong."

The couple said they had to work through a lot of emotions, including separating the love for their son with the issue at hand. They broke the news to their son about a year after they found out the information.

Vanner said, "I took him on a drive in our car, and we were going to ice cream actually. I wanted to make sure his attention was just on our conversation."

The couple is now warning others of the possibility of problems like this happening. Both the Vanners and the other family involved plan to file lawsuits against the University of Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine.
