23-year-old Steven Weems was being chased by police in his Porsche Cayenne when he crashed through a cement rail, and plowed right into a crowd of carnival goers in South Los Angeles. According to ABC7, six people waiting in line to get onto a ride were injured as a result of the hit-and-run. The victims range in age from 30 to 50. The six individuals were taken to the hospital following the incident.
ABC7 mentioned that all injured individuals sustained non-life threatening injuries. Sgt. Robert Leary of the Los Angeles Police Department estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people to be attending the carnival at the time of the accident.
"It is a blessing that no one actually got severely injured. I think that they heard the car, I'm not sure if he was honking, obviously people were screaming. It was quite hectic, so I think people saw this car coming in and thankfully they got out of the way in time," Sgt. Leary shared with ABC7.
Video footage of the incident shows the crowd running and screaming in terror as the car continues to plow through the carnival. Weems was arrested immediately after the hit-and-run occurred and is being held in jail on $50,000 bail.
