City officials confirmed Sunday (June 27) that the death toll has risen to nine following a partial collapse of a Miami condominium, according to NBC Miami.

During a morning news conference, it was revealed that a 125-foot long trench was cut into the debris to find more possible survivors. Rescue crews are searching in crevices and hidden spaces for any signs of life.

"We were able to recover four additional bodies in the rubble as well as additional human remains," Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at the news briefing. Officials are working with family members to identify victims.

Four people died when parts of the Champlain Towers South Condo, a 12-story Surfside condominium, fell apart early Thursday (June 24) morning. Reporters learned the four victims have been identified:

  • Stacie Dawn Fang, 54 years old, Apartment #1002, Recovered June 24
  • Antonio Lozano, 83 years old, Apartment #903, Recovered June 24
  • Gladys Lozano, 79 years old, Apartment #903, Recovered June 25
  • Manuel LaFont, 54 years old, Apartment #801, Recovered June 25

"The process of identifying these victims is very difficult," Levine Cava said. "We have been gathering samples from family members. This allows us to do rapid testing on site. We... have already notified the next of kin."

Even though a small fire within the debris created issues for workers Saturday, it was out by Sunday morning (June 27), NBC Miami said. Search efforts continue for at least 150 people still unaccounted for in the wreckage. The news station also provided the names and photos of some of the missing people.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that FEMA has been deployed to assist survivors of the collapse.
