This year, many retailers have struggled financially and have either needed to declare bankruptcy and close all of their locations, or have had to shutter some of their stores to cut down on costs. Giant retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning and Christmas Tree Shops are among the bankrupt ones, while Sears, Pizza Hut and Walgreens are closing locations, and Walgreens isn't the only drugstore to do it - CVS has implemented plans to shutter a whopping 900 stores.

The chain started closing down locations last year but things seem to be ramping up, with stores in Placer County and Rocklin, California; Des Moines, Iowa; Tallahassee, Florida; Kansas City, Missouri; Queens, New York; Houston, Texas; and Fairfax, Virginia all about to close in the next couple weeks or just closed. Before the end of 2026, 900 locations will have been shuttered, which, per a statement from CVS, is part of the drugstore's "retail footprint strategy" to "reduce store density in certain locations." That same statement described how they choose which stores to close explaining, "We consider a number of factors when making these decisions, including local market dynamics, population shifts, and store density."

This is by no means an end to CVS though - the retailer still has nearly 10,000 stores, and they plan to remodel many of them to include more health services. They also will offer employees affected by the closures jobs at nearby locations.
