Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning,
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is that when you are told no about something
you want, consider whether there might be a yes hiding
behind it. Disappointments are inevitable, but sometimes when one option

(00:29):
isn't happening, a related option will become available if you
look for it. So we hear no all the time
in life, like no, you're not getting that promotion. No,
you can't have a dinner reservation at this restaurant for Friday. No,
I can't have the report done by Monday. Or no,
there's no room in the four and five year old

(00:50):
swimming class. No, your kid wasn't admitted to that college.
It is disappointing, and sometimes no is just no. I
cringe when people sometimes say they won't take no for
an answer, because when someone has set a boundary, it
is frustrating and unfair for everyone if you keep trying

(01:13):
to push it. But other times, when you are turned
down for something you want, there may be something related
that is available if you just look around or ask.
So if your child doesn't make a sports team, maybe
they could be the team manager. The coach may not
volunteer that information, but if someone asks, another opportunity may

(01:35):
be available. After all, If you don't get a job
at an organization you love, ask whether they see any
other job openings that might be a good fit for you.
Make sure everyone has your information, and keep the lines
of communication open so you can check in every few

(01:55):
months to see I have lost track of how many
people have told me about interviewing at a company, losing
out in the last round for a job, and then
being first in mind the next time there is an opening.
It happens all the time. If a change in your
work schedule means you can no longer take the tennis

(02:17):
class you look forward to every week, what about scheduling
private lessons? What about trying a different tennis place You
just might find something you like. If you can't get
a reservation at the restaurant you wanted to go to
for your birthday, why not plan ahead and get a
reservation for your anniversary in a few months. They probably

(02:40):
aren't booked up. Then if the brother, If your brother
gets the painting you love from your parents' house, have
a print made of it for yourself. You are more
or less looking at the same thing. When you don't
get what you hoped for, get creative and consider whether
there is something adjacent that might be satisfying instead. I

(03:03):
have heard people say that when a door closes, a
window opens, and maybe that's true, but in my experience,
it's more like when you realize a door has closed,
then you can check whether you could open the windows.
Sometimes they are locked too, but not always. If you
get curious and look around, you might find some version
of a yes alongside that no. In the meantime, this

(03:28):
is Laura. Thanks for listening, and here's to making the
most of our time. Thanks for listening to Before Breakfast.
