Welcome to the New Corner Office, the podcast where we
share strategies for thriving in the new world of work,

(02:01):
where location and hours are more flexible than in the past.
Today's tip is to pay attention to what makes a
great work day. When you have a day that's productive
and satisfying, savor it and study it. Analyzing time helps
us figure out what went well so we can repeat

(02:24):
it in the future. Here's how this works. When you
have an awesome day, First, pay attention to what your
goals and priorities were. What kind of priorities were you
focused on, and how many. In many cases, people feel
better when they have a limited number of meaningful to
dous and get to all of them. Then when they

(02:45):
aim for hundreds and just get through part of the list. Next,
think about the shape of your day when you had
scheduled commitments and when you had unstructured time. What feels
like the right balance to you. Also consider the different
types of activities you did. How much of your day
did you spend working solo and how much did you

(03:07):
spend with other people. Were those interactions over email or
phone or video conference or possibly in person. What kinds
of work were you doing, writing, planning, client interaction? What
were the high moments of the day. When did you smile?
When did you feel proud or satisfied. It is absolutely

(03:29):
fair game to consider if your brakes felt really good too.
Pay attention to this because probably you can repeat these
great breaks in the future. In any case, you might
try taking notes and then giving each day a rating
one to five stars. Once you've got your notes, you
can construct an outline of a five star day. Go

(03:52):
ahead and write it down. It might look something like this.
On a great day, I know my top priority for
the morning and my top priority for the afternoon. I'm
in meetings for less than three hours and have uninterrupted
chunks of work time. I have at least ninety minutes
of margin, so I can still accomplish my priorities. If
something comes up and I chat with my two favorite

(04:16):
colleagues at some point during the day. By coming up
with a description of a great day, you get a
vision for shaping your actual days, and then you can
try actively building those features into more of your days.
When you see the number of meetings stacking up, you
can develop the courage to request to move one to

(04:38):
another day. You can request to move a morning meeting
to the afternoon. See you have at least a two
hour uninterrupted stretch, and you make sure to call those
favorite colleagues, either about work or just to check in.
So today, look at what goes right and rate your day.

(04:59):
And whenever are you have a really good five star day,
study it closely. You just might wind up with a
lot more five star days in the future. In the meantime,
this is Laura, Thanks for listening, and here's the succeeding
