This is Laura. Welcome to the New Corner Office, the
podcast where we share strategies for thriving in the new

(01:29):
world of work. We location and hours are more flexible
than in the past. Today's tip is to make a
ritual out of cleaning your office space. Now, I'm not
one of those people who's bothered by a cluttered desk.
I never have been, and I tend not to clean
too frequently, which is perhaps why it's a good thing
I work for myself. But I've learned over the years

(01:51):
that for many people, a cluttered workspace or desk can
be mildly stressful and sometimes baddening if you can't find
a crucial document under a mound of paper and dirty
coffee cups. While you can leave a corporate office at
the end of the day, your work from home setup
might be more visible, so the stress bleeds over into
the rest of your life. If you find a messy

(02:14):
desk stressful, then it's smart to build some cleaning time
into your shutdown ritual. Handled right, this can be a
satisfying division between the end of work time and the
start of home time. A few minutes before the end
of the day. Look around for any dirty dishes, wrappers,
soda cans, and other such things. Collect them for carding

(02:34):
to the dishwasher in the trash or recycling bed. If
you've managed to score some bleach wipes, consider wiping down
your laptop, your phone, and any other surfaces you touch frequently.
Think about doing your future self little favors, like plugging
in devices so they'll be fully charged the next time
you sit down, or even setting up the coffee ahead
of time if you brew it in your office. Corral

(02:57):
any objects that need to go back to their homes,
like to the bookshelf, pens to the penholder, a stapler
to your desk drawer. Then do what you can to
manage the paper. I throw away stuff that's past its
useful life, but anything that's still active can go in
what I call my active pile. I know that any
important document I still need is there, and since it's

(03:20):
my home office, it's not going to disappear. Yep. This
is often a fairly substantial pile. Oh well, you can
be organized without being neat in any case. If you
are not okay with big piles of paper, then figure
out where the stuff goes and file it as need be.
An upside of this cleaning ritual is that it can

(03:40):
give you a good excuse to get up and move
around for a few minutes if you've been sitting for
too long. Ritualizing this process by doing things in the
same order each time can bring a sense of calm
to this part of the day. If your brain is
an overactive work mode, a little cleaning can help you
quiet down. A good cleaning shutdown ritual shouldn't be too

(04:02):
time consuming or difficult, and it shouldn't feel like you're
adding yet another task to your day, Otherwise you might
find yourself dreading it or skipping it. Indeed, if cleaning
doesn't really excite you, no need to implement this as
a daily ritual. Weekly could be just fine for anything
beyond food and dirty dishes, which, trust me, do not

(04:23):
get better with age. Just do what you can to
keep it under control. I do spend a little time
on Friday afternoons tidying up, which helps establish the beginning
of the weekend. Yes, I'm often back in the home
office at some point on Saturday or Sunday, but at
least while I'm there, my desk will be clean. So
today I think about whether tidying might make sense as

(04:46):
part of your shutdown ritual. When you work from home,
you don't have to be as careful about a clean
desk as you do in an office. That's one reason
many of us like working from home, though I confess
I was never all that careful in my office jobs either.
But sometimes it's nice to see the nice dusk you
bought and maybe find that good pen you've been looking for.

(05:07):
