Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning.
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is that there is never a perfect time. Sometimes
people push things forward or decide they can't do something
(00:25):
because life is just so hectic right now, But it
won't be less hectic anytime in the near future. If
there is something you want to do, you are going
to have to do it in the middle of everything else,
not when everything else calms down. So I was recently
(00:47):
part of a group that was trying to figure out
when to schedule something. Summer was out because people were
gone on vacations, then much of September was out because
of back to school craziness. Perhaps there was one week
or two in September or October that was going to
be good, though it wasn't clear as people mentioned various
sports schedules, and then soon after that it would be
(01:09):
the holidays, and well, we couldn't really schedule things during
the holidays, could we. I had to laugh about the
whole process. There is no perfect time. There is never
a moment when nothing out of the ordinary is going on.
I see this delusion all the time when people keep
time logs. When people say they want to spend their
(01:32):
time better, I suggest figuring out where the time is
going now. The best way to do that is to
track your time for a week. So people start but
then stop or figure they can't start for a few
weeks because next week is crazy for X, y or
z reason. They want to track a week that shows
(01:53):
life in a certain way, just as people are hunting
on the calendar for a time when there is nothing
else going on. But there are no typical weeks or
perfect times to schedule anything now. I know full well
that sometimes people use various bits of busyness as an
excuse if someone doesn't want to do something, that results
(02:18):
in those vague statements of oh, well, you know, September
is so busy. I guess we're going to have to
look forward a little bit. So here's a little pro tip.
If you don't want to do something now, you are
never going to want to do it. There is no
point in suggesting people look to the future to schedule
a time when you are less busy. Just give your
(02:38):
kind regards and move on. But the reverse is also true,
which is that if you do want to do something,
there is not really going to be a better time
in some magical future. You can hunt for a new
job during the summer, or during the back to school craziness,
or during the holidays, and if you want a new job,
(03:02):
you may as well do just that. Yes, you can
go back to school while your kids are in school
if you want to start piano lessons. There is no
point waiting until your kid's football season is over, because
there will be something else filling the time after that.
There is no perfect time. Now. That doesn't mean you
(03:23):
should schedule that big work meeting on December twenty fifth,
but it does mean that anything new has to come
in the middle of everything else. Better to just accept
that and start moving forward. In the meantime, this is Laura.
