Today's tip is that if you want to fit more
activity into your life, you could try the equivalent of
to a days. You might be able to use more
spots of time for exercise and enjoy more variety overall. So,
as some sports teams are ramping up for the season,

they do what are known as two A days or
two practices a day. I believe this was particularly common
in football, though the NFL stopped doing them at one point.
This might be because two normal practices a day would
be twice as grueling as one.

No thank you. However, the concept of exercising twice a
day has some especially if you approach it right. Sometimes
people assume they need to exercise for a long time,
or it's just not worth it, or they think they
only have time for one kind of exercise in life.
But then that gets a little boring and perhaps they stop,

so why not switch things up? This episode is first
airing in summer, when it feels too hot to exercise
during the day. For probably a lot of my listeners,
mornings tend to be cooler people think, hey, I should
get up to exercise. Of course, then they realize that
waking up really early to do a long workout in
(01:38):
the morning before work and feel like a pretty big ask.
But maybe you could go for a twenty five minute
run in the morning and then do a fifteen minute
strength training session at night after your kids go to bed.
That is forty minutes of activity, but you didn't need
a forty minute chunk of time to do it. Plus
(01:59):
you got to do some aerobic activity and some resistance training.
That is a double win.

Or maybe you can do.

A fifteen minute yoga video over your lunch break and
then you swim laps for twenty minutes during your kids
thirty minutes swim lesson at night. The lesson isn't long
enough to cover a long workout, but it can cover something,
and you can do something different at a different point
to get yourself up over thirty minutes a day. Or
(02:31):
maybe you go for a family bike ride on a Saturday,
but your family isn't particularly fast. You'll get some aerobic
activity and then you could run sprints up and down
your driveway while your kids are watching a show. Any
exercise is better than no exercise. That said, I know
some people find it hard to believe that twenty minutes
(02:53):
will do much. Maybe, if you have big training goals,
any given twenty minutes won't cover it all. But my
experience is that people have a lot more twenty minute
chunks during the day than they have hour long chunks.
If you think you can only exercise during an hour
long chunk, there may be a reasonable number of days
when you don't exercise. If you start trying to use
(03:17):
bits of time, though, you might exercise on more days,
and by trying different things, you keep from getting bored
by any one activity. Running forty minutes on a treadmill
can feel like being on a hamster wheel. Twenty minutes
might feel like it's just not that long, and then
you do something else for another twenty minutes. Or maybe
(03:39):
you even run for twenty minutes on that treadmill in
the morning, go about your day and run for another
twenty minutes after your chores at night. Neither session felt
so long, but you still manage to run for forty
minutes on a busy day, or maybe you try to
find three slots in a day. I always love aiming
(04:00):
for what I call try days in the summer, I
run in the early morning, go for a bike ride
as a break from work in the afternoon, and then
do just a little swimming while I'm in the pool
with the kids at night. It is not a real
triathlon by any means, but it makes for a more
interesting day of activity than I'd experience otherwise, and it

can be surprising how many days allow it all to fit.
