Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of I Heart Radio.
Good Morning. This is Laura, Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to watch the sun rise or set.
If you're in the Northern Hemisphere these days, the rising
and setting happen at times that you are probably awake,

(00:25):
and seeing this daily miracle can connect you to nature
and be a great occasion for awe. Today's tip, like
a few others I've talked about lately, comes from Melissa's
Stagonus's book Everyday Mindfulness. This book features over a hundred
ideas for building moments of calm and observation into daily life.

(00:46):
Tip number sixty eight is to watch the sun rise
or set. Watching the sun rise and set is a
simple practice that can feel so magical. Melissa writes, not
only can you observe the opening and closing of the day,
but you also get a front row seat to a
live art show in the sky. As we all know,

(01:08):
even a relatively modest sunrise or sunset can be beautiful.
The good ones can just blow your mind. And the
crazy thing is we get two opportunities a day to
see this wow. In other words, attending this awe inspiring
show is pretty easy. Check your weather app to see

(01:28):
when the sun is rising and setting over the next
few days. Choose a day when there won't be complete
cloud cover, then go outside or sit near a big
window and watch. In my neck of the woods, the
sun is rising around six forty am and setting around
four pm these days, and so it's not like this
requires waking up at four am or anything. But it's

(01:51):
easy enough not to pause and notice, because hey, the
sun does rise and set every day, Thank goodness, it
all this happens, so it's easy not to notice it
happening this morning. On the other hand, I watched. I
woke up at four am because the baby woke up
and he went back to sleep, but I did not,

(02:13):
so I went to my desk and worked from five
to seven am. During that time, I made sure the
curtains were fully open, and I kept looking up from
my desk as the sky brightened and then turned orange
and pink before finally going blue for the day. If
mornings are rushed, the sunset might be more doable. If
the sunset happens during your work day, which might be

(02:34):
the case in winter, plan to take a fifteen minute
break around the sunset to get outside and see it.
We need breaks anyway, and we should get some physical activity.
Watching a sunset can add a moment of awe to
even a normal afternoon. In any case, this is so
easy to do. We just have to do it. So today,

(03:00):
look at the sunrise and sunset times and commit to
pausing in your day to watch one of them. Coffee
on the back porch watching the sunrise, a late afternoon
walk to see the sunset if you'd like. This is
a great opportunity for gratitude for the sheer marvel of
this planet, for these extravagant displays of beauty that are

(03:22):
there for free for everyone. Melissa writes that you can
simply sit in silence, appreciating how the light transforms the
guy while remembering that you are part of a magnificent
world an infinite universe. Sounds good to me. In the meantime.

(03:42):
