Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Golf Fitness Bomb Squad podcast with Chris Finn,
a production of P for S Golf. What's Up, everybody?
Welcome to the Golf Fitness Bomb Squad. My name is
Chris Finn and I'm your host here in Master's Week.
It is the greatest week of the year in golf
in my opinion. Uh, not the first person to say that.

(00:23):
Definitely not the first time you've probably heard that and
not supposed to timestamp podcasts, but what the hell, it's
Master's Week. I think one of the things I wanted
to talk about. You know, obviously there's lots of talk
around predictions and who's gonna win and who are the
favorites this year. I think one of the cool stories
for me always about Augusta is because of the how
hilly and how you know, just the terrain of the course.

(00:46):
They're definitely you know, our physical elements that are brought
into play here that are not necessarily brought in at
other courses. So you know, for INDs, you go to
play down in Florida and know it's totally flat, you
know Ghost Line course. You know, walking is very very easy, right,
you have uphills, downhills, you have uphill lies, you have
downhill lies. The increased demand on ankle flexibility is way up.

(01:13):
And obviously just the demand because you're walking up big
hills and down big hills, which requires a lot of
eccentric load that maybe is not normal down the hills,
and then obviously.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
The the challenge going up the hills.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
So you know, obviously Tiger Woods is definitely somebody that's
talked about a bunch when it comes to the physical
side of things, and just in general, he's talked about
a lot. And I think that's one of the things
people don't understand. You know, obviously he's had his ankle surgeries,
is you know, all the leg surgeries lower you know,
all the lower extremity stuff that he's had to go on.
People don't necessarily think about, like why it's hard to

(01:47):
walk for him. And you know, anybody who's had an
ankle fusion an ankle replacement, Uh, maybe you just have
arthritis in the ankles.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
And we don't talk about ankles a lot, but.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
For those who do have these issues, maybe have tight calves,
like if you've ever tried to hit a shot where
the ball is above your feet, right, and particularly severely.
You know, it's hard to keep your feet flat on
the ground and make it an actual swing because it
feels like your heel wants to come up off the ground.
And that's due to a lack of ankle mobility. So
anytime Tiger has a shot where the ball is above

(02:20):
his feet, it's going to stress you know, the end
range of that ankle. And so I think that's where
there starts to be a lot of challenges for him
and for anyone else who has had ankle issues.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Or maybe foot issues.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
I had a golfer who had had one of the
bones and her feet replaced, and that she had similar
kind of issues around the ankle being tight, and that
we had.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
To work, you know, work through and you had to get.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
The mobility and then get the muscles and everything around
it around that joint strong enough to support a lot
of walking and load going through the you know, through
the foot in the ankle complex. So it's definitely something
to watch and that, you know, I'm sure Tiger will
be on TV even if he's not competing, just because
he's Tiger. But you know, I think one of the
fun things is that if if you get to watch

(03:04):
a feature group, or or footage of him even between shots,
looking at how he's navigating the terrain will definitely be
interesting for any of you physical geeks out there. I
think one of the other interesting uh you know, at
least topics or or headlines that I that I'm I
have enjoyed following will continue to is actually Patilla just

(03:24):
one last week. He's actually a rallying native, which is
where we're located. So known of him and him and
his dad, you know, met them back when he was
probably ten eleven, twelve, very young. Uh So it's really
cool to see just somebody who's worked really, really hard
get to that level where he's where he needs to be.
He's definitely one. I've heard lots of jokes on the

(03:45):
radio of how how small his waist is. There's one
host for who was somebody I'm serious, was talking about
how uh you know, basically his belt size was so
much bigger than actually is. They should have a different,
uh you know, different a different price, but I.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Thought it was criminal to pay the same.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
But I think the cool thing about the story with
Akhay to watch from a physical perspective is he is
so freaking skinny.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
He's had back issues in the past.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
We saw last week he had that shoulder issue, not
having any musculature around. And I shouldn't say he doesn't have
any musculature. He obviously has muscles, otherwise he wouldn't be standing,
but with them so small, and another way to put that,
with the musculature so small and not very strong, the
ability for him to withstand stress is going to be

(04:35):
very much decreased. And he's at a much higher risk
of back issues, elbow issues, shoulder issues, all of those things.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Particularly because he moves so quickly.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
He's somebody who's making his living off of his elasticity,
and he's an amazing athlete, obviously world class athlete in
the golf space. The concern for him definitely, you know,
all be interested to see how he does longer, you know,
over the course of the of the entire week in
the Masters. But I think the more thing for me
is to watch his career and as we go and

(05:03):
are we going to run into like we saw with
Will's l tours, you get to the mid twenties, h
and that elasticity strategy starts to not become very viable
for longevity in the game. So great guy, super happy
for him winning last week. I'm just really excited to
see hopefully he plays really well here in Augusta. And

(05:24):
you know, obviously I think a good note to take.
He's definitely an extreme on the on the skinny side.
But as you're watching all the players this week, think
about you know, those little guys. You know, Justin Thomas
is another one, or Rory is not a big guy,
but he's put on more masks to hopefully help his
longevity later in his career. And you can see he's
obviously one of the leaders in driving on the tour.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
But looking at guys at who rely it when they're young.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
On a lot of elasticity as they get older, watching
how their games evolve, you know, for for better or
for worse, and then also their how their bodies hold up,
it's definitely something to be aware of because you know,
as you get older, you're going to have to start
relying more on force production from strength as opposed to
elasticity and speed. And so as your speed naturally is

(06:09):
going to decrease a little bit in the equation, you know,
and basically how fast you produce the amount of force
you produce and how fast you produce it. As the
speed at what you're able to produce that force generally
gets a little slower as you get older. You have
to make up for it as you get you know,
with strength. That's something we're doing with Kyle Berkshire and
the extreme of speed, you know, just prepping him for

(06:29):
a long career and winning lots of world championships and
so definitely a cool topic and just to think about
as you're watching the Masters this week, and hopefully you
guys enjoy as much.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
As I will.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
So I'm going to keep this one short because I
know you probably want to get to watch in the
practice rounds here today, but appreciate you as always hanging
out with us on the Golf Fitness Bomb Squad and
hopefully kind of a little insight into the demands that
hills and unstable or unsteady lies are. Unsteady on even

(07:00):
lies UH can cause you know, troublesome for people with
bad ankle mobility.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
So definitely a good thing to be looking at.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
UH if you are someone who struggles with ankle mobility issues,
definitely go check out UH you know, our our web
page p p US golf Parper success on or go
check us out on YouTube. Tons of videos there for free,
uh to work on your ankle mobility. And then obviously
you know the discussion around action and the being really
skinny and elastic ly uh. For those of you looking
to extend the longevity. Maybe you were that guy and

(07:30):
maybe you've lost some of that and you want to
gain some speed and some distance back. Or maybe you've
had injuries like he's had, or like Xala Taurus had,
and you want to avoid surgery like Xala Taurus had.
You know, definitely check out the YouTube page. There some
some great resources for you, uh, just head over Parper
success or Peper Risk Golf all there for you. So
thanks always for hanging out and we'll catch you in

(07:51):
the next episode.
