Tesla Wants To Sell Electricity In Texas

Elon Musk wants to sell Texans electricity.

His company Tesla recently applied with the Public Utility Commission of Texas to sell electricity on the retail market, Texas Monthly first reported.

The whole deal is very hush hush, but Tesla Energy Ventures will know by November if it will be the state's newest utility company.

It's not really surprising that Tesla is getting involved in the electric business since it started building a mega battery near Houston in March. The giant battery is estimated to hold enough energy to power up to 20,000 homes on a hot summer day.

Musk also mocked the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) after the state power grid overseer left millions of people without power during a historic February winter storm.

"@ERCOT_ISO is not earning that R," he tweeted.

The state's utility market has been in an upheaval since the storm. At least five companies, including Griddy, stopped selling electricity in Texas after customers were charged thousands of dollars and threatened to sue.

ERCOT has also struggled to generate enough electricity for the entire state and even asked people to conserve power during periods of nicer weather.
