Recently, dozens of retailers have been closing stores that are underperforming. Walmart, Best Buy, Walgreens, CVS, TGI Fridays, GameStop, Sears, Boston Market, Foot Locker, Pizza Hut and many others have shuttered locations due to financial issues. Now, Target plans to do it as well, but for a very different reason. According to the retail giant, the closures have to do with crime. In a statement, they explained, "Despite our efforts, we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating these stores safely and successfully."
The statement went on to say, "In this case, we cannot continue operating these stores because theft and organized retail crime are threatening the safety of our team and guests, and contributing to unsustainable business performance." Stores in California, Washington, Oregon and New York are affected by the company's decision. On Monday, October 21, the following Target locations will close:
- 1690 Folsom Street, San Francisco, California
- 2650 Broadway, Oakland, California
- 4301 Century Blvd, Pittsburg, California
- 4535 University Way NE, Seattle, Washington
- 1448 NW Market St, Seattle, Washington
- 939 SW Morrison Street, Portland, Oregon
- 3031 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, Oregon
- 4030 NE Halsey Street, Portland, Oregon
- 517 E 117th Street, New York, New York
Customers at the pharmacies at the affected stores will have their prescriptions transferred to a nearby CVS. As for Target, even though these stores are closing, the company overall is doing just fine, with over 1,900 stores still open across the country.
