for thriving in the new world of work, where location
and hours are more flexible than in the past. Today's
tip is to introduce some Monday morning rituals into your
life that feel like treats. This is one of the
best ways to start the week well so you can
accomplish all the wonderful things that you need to do.

(01:50):
Monday morning commutes tend to be miserable, so in the
past one of my favorite bits of advice for people
was to build in something fun to that Monday morning trip.
Save a favorite funny podcast and listen to it in
the car on Monday mornings. Read your favorite magazine on
the train, car pool with your spouse or a friend

(02:10):
on Monday morning, and that way, what might be a
source of dread could become a source of pleasure. These days,
many people are still working from home because of the coronavirus,
but even without a commute, Monday morning can feel vastly
better if you consciously build in a pleasurable ritual. Most mornings,

(02:30):
you could save time and money by making your own coffee,
but Monday walk to your local coffee shop, savor the smells,
and start the day with more energy thanks to getting
some physical activity outside, to say nothing of the caffeine.
Maybe most days you do a quick video workout where
you can squeeze it in, but on Monday morning you

(02:51):
go for a trail run and let the sounds of
nature help you start the work week with far lower
stress levels. Maybe you build in a thirty minute before
breakfast zoom call with your spiritual small group and enjoy
some fellowship and prayers and good thoughts from people who
really care about you. Talk about a good way to
start the work week. A commute is, by its nature,

(03:14):
a ritual. It's often unpleasant ritual, but it is a ritual, nonetheless,
something we do day after day until it becomes second nature.
When we work from home. We need to come up
with other rituals that restart the work week. So think
creatively about what might make you feel like you've started
the work week well. What small ritual would be pleasurable

(03:38):
and meaningful what would you genuinely look forward to. Most
people aren't going to devote hours to these things. But
if you don't have a commute taking up space in
your life, you do have a little more space to
play with. Use that time to create a fake commute
that transports you mentally from one kind of time to another.

(03:59):
When you consciously build these rituals into your life, you'll
find that Monday's aren't terrible. They're fun on their own,
and they set you up for great things to come.
If you have a Monday morning ritual, I'd love to
hear about it. You can reach me at Laura at
Laura Vanderkam dot com. In the meantime, this is Laura.
